Some characteristic
• The past five years’ dynamic development – Local issues – Local solutions– Local stakeholders– Local funding sources
• Current state of development– Cooperation regionally/nationally/internationally– Cooperation around specific solutions– Additional national funding sources
3
Projects
Transition from local issues to coordinating activities
• SVEP project in Sweden• Digital library projects in Norway, Finland,
Denmark• Nordic project DiVA• Issues:
– Interoperability, aggregate services – Long-term preservation – Promotional activities

Why local portals for ETDs ?
• Excellent way to present existing content to different audience
• Language specific (undergraduate theses mostly written in Scandinavian languages)
• Create positive competition– helps get strong local support– promotes submission by students
• Different focus at research universities & univ. colleges (doctoral theses & undergraduate theses)

Future?
• Fewer aggregated general services– Some of current services probably
redundant• DiVA versus national services
• New services – granularity of services
• More discrete services which can be integrated with other services (ex. student portals & ETD’s)
subject specific services• support concept of sets• meaningful sets
