Methods of the Survey

It covered all territory of the country. Totally 95 selected points located so they reflected all regions of the country. The company Spinter tyrimai making public opinion and market polls conducted a survey of Lithuanian population using a method of

The survey covered population of Lithuania from 18 to 65 years of age. Sample of the survey

1,002 respondents were questioned during the survey. Sampling

Multi-stage stratified probability sampling method was used in the survey. This sampling method guarantees data representation, i.e., each household of the country has equal possibilities to be questioned and sampled population according to the target criteria conform to general population.

Statistical Error

In selective quantitative analysis there is always a possibility for a statistical error, which should be considered in interpretation of the data. For instance, if after questioning 1,002 respondents we got the results that 46.9% of the interviewed people had heard of possibilities on protection of trademarks and industrial property, then there is 95 percent probability that the actual value is between 43.8 and 50.0 percent.

Accuracy assessment decreases when the number of analysed answers is decreasing. Below please find a chart which helps to estimate the statistical error.

Conclusion

As compared to results of the survey conducted in April 2007, the number of people (from 8% to 11%) who were aware of the possibilities on protection of inventions, trademarks and industrial design increased. Besides 48% of the respondents indicated that they had heard of it, however they did not know specific possibilities.

76% of the survey participants indicated that they would register/most likely to register inventions, trademarks or industrial design in order to protect them. In April 2007 61% of the respondents expressed this kind of attitude.

If there is need for registration of the inventions, trademarks or industrial design people would apply to the State Patent Bureau (46%; in April 2007 - 37 %) most often . Besides, the number of respondents who would apply to the Lithuanian Council of Copyright and Neighbouring Rights in such a case also increased (from 27% in April 2007 to 31% in February 2008). The third choice would be the State Establishment Centre of Registers (7%).

Survey results demonstrate that respondents expressed a more definite attitude towards defining training curriculum on protection of inventions, trademarks or design in education institutions in Lithuania: both a number approving of this suggestion (from 48% in year 2007 to 53% in year 2008) and disapproving of it increased (from 23%in year 2007 to 30% in year 2008).

8% of the questioned people indicated that they were aware of a possibility to obtain legal protection of inventions, trademarks and designs in all Europe, too. Additionally 41% admitted that they had heard of such a possibility, however they could not specify institutions providing such services.
