Managing Research Dynamics
ETH Zurich
Dr. Regula Altmann-Jöhl
21 December, 2005
The world has changed ...
... and the legislator has reacted :
Awareness: research results have an economic value!
The US have done it for a long time – Bay-Doyle Act
Assumption of the public and some parlamentarians:
research at the universities cost a lot of tax payer money and
the transfer of the results into products is not effective enough
Discussions with industry: industrial partners are less
interested in „published knowledge and know-how“–
universities on the other hand should and must publish. Since
confidentiality is difficult at the universities intellectual
property has to be protected.
