3.2 Monthly ICONS meeting
To organize the activities of the ICFO-SPIE student chapter, we meet up to discuss upcoming activities. Usually this is held during lunch once a month and usually with a treat of pizza.
3.3 Coffee sessions
2011/08/03 Up Close with Prof. Roy Glauber
ICONS members meet informally with Nobel Prize in Physics.
Prof. Roy Glauber, winner of the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physics and Distinguished Invited Professor at ICFO, met with members of the student organization, ICONS, for an informal discussion about his life’s work, his experience in the Manhattan Project and his interactions with other great professors. Making personal contact with a scientist of Prof. Glauber’s stature was both insightful and inspiring for all.
3.4 Visit to Research Infrastructures and Industries
In a new initiative, ICONS and KTT decided to organize visits to out-standing Research Infrastructures and Industries.
The first event of this new initiative was a visit to the ALBA Synchrotron Light Facility (http://www.cells.es/) close to Barcelona on Friday the 4th of March of 2011.
3.5 Social Friday
In order to encourage the relationship of the ICFO-SPIE student chapter with the PhD students and other colleagues, and for the recruitment purposes, we set up this Social Friday, where we encourage people to join this activity for talking while enjoying a drink and a snack together.
3.6 El Día de la Luz (The Day of Light)
‘El Día de la Luz’, the day of light in Spanish, is our educational outreach activity to teach the basics of optics mainly to local high school students between 16‐18 years, who come to our institute with their teachers.
We introduce optics to the students through presentations and demonstrations of basic examples of optics such as polarization, wavelength, color, energy conversion, reflection and refraction.
Furthermore, they experience how light is useful for our daily life, for example how light will be converted to heat by a radiometer, or also to electricity by a solar cell; students are also introduced to optical telecommunications by showing them how information is transmitted through optical fibers.
In total, 75 students from three schools, IES Ferran Casablancas, Escola Vedruna de Terrassa, and Institut de Vidreres participated in this activity with interest and passion during 13th-14th April.
3.7 Life Research Fair (Fira Recerca en Directe)
From 05/04/2011 to 07/04/2011
At Parc Científic Barcelona - La Pedrera de CatalunyaCaixa
"Live Research" is an exhibition of current research that aims to help improve the scientific literacy of our society by opening to the public the research that currently takes place in Barcelona, and reach the town by the characteristic features of the scientific method by the same researchers.
Organized by the Barcelona Science Park in coordination with the Social Work CatalunyaCaixa the Fair "Live Research" aims to communicate a coordinated research Barcelona Displaying research projects of various centers and institutes for R & D in the city.
It is a good opportunity for students as well as for the general public, as they can talk with researchers and scientists to solve puzzles by experimenting with laboratory instruments that are involved with the latest research projects in many different fields.
3.8 Open day of ICFO/Lab tour
We kindly received the visit of a student chapter of chemistry (Proton International) on April 18th, 2011.
The visitors were guided through different research labs in ICFO. Especially, the visitors showed great interest in the ICFO´s installations and worker friendly environment. It was interesting to receive students with another scientific background.
3.9 IONS Conferences
IONS, the International OSA Network of Students, connects young researchers with people from around the globe, all actively engaged in optics and photonics. In this conference ICFO‐SPIE student chapter gets the opportunity to communicate their academic results and broadcast their friendship with other chapters.
IONS‐9 Salamanca (4, 5 and 6 March 2010)
The meeting was held at Salamanca University, Spain.
Members of ICFO student chapter ICONS, Osamu Takayama, Venkata Ramaiah Badarla, Can Yao and Giorgio Volpe, contributed to the meeting.
