Since 1957, the Treaty of the European Community has provided a legal basis for policy and action on gender equality
New Treaty of the European Union: gender equality is "fundamental value" (art.2 TUE) and an objective (art.3TUE) of the EU
The Union is required to promote equality between men and women in all its activities
The EU's Charter of Fundamental Rights provides for equality between women and men and prohibits sex discrimination
