INTRODUCTION

The Karuma Hydro Power Project, approximately covers 1600 acres

and traverses west of Karuma National Park and also through the

villages of Awoo, Nora, Karuma, Bedmot in the districts of Oyam and

Kiryadongo all located in the northern part of Uganda.

The central aspect of this project area is the Karuma falls which has

been under utilized over the years putting its approved potential of

generating hydro electric power into consideration. Construction of adam at this fall for hydro power production will be a big economic

contribution to the people of Karuma and the neighboring areas and

the whole of Uganda. The Karuma hydro power project is located in

the Northern part of Uganda in Kiryadongo and Masindi Districts.

Energy Infratech Pvt Ltd (EIPL),is engaged as a consultant.

Energy Infratech Pvt Ltd (EIPL) mandated Advanced Technology &

Engineering Services (ATES) a Division of Aimil Ltd. to conduct

Refraction Seismic Survey along the TRT, TRT out fall and MAT for

Karuma Hydro Electric Power Project (600MW) in Uganda. The

purpose of the survey was to determine and estimate the thickness

of overburden, underlying fractured and sound (compact) rock

system based on the seismic waves through these layers generated

by the Seismic Refraction Technique.

The Refraction Seismic survey is carrying from 19th December, 2010

to 31th December,2010 . In all Five (5) Seismic lines were conductedusing 24 channel Seismograph (RAS-24) with 24 geophones and inter

Geophone spacing of 5m interval have been kept according to the

field condition and on the basis of available ground stretchwith an

overlapping of 12 geophones The lines were laid on the ground as

50m interval. The total length covered Five(5) Seismic lines are of

5550m.

This report covers the field investigations concerning seismic

refraction tests carried out at the project site, the results of the field

studies and conclusions drawn there from.

REGIONAL GEOLOGY

The African Continent mainly consists of Precambrian Shield areas

with a mobile belt of younger rocks stretching NE from southwest

Africa to the Red Sea. The northeastern part of this mobile belt is

known as the East African Rift Zone. Northward from Lake Nyasa, the

rift zone branches out as the Eastern and Western rift. Both the rifts

are characterized by continuous belts of normal faults and graben

structures. The western rift valley runs the length of Uganda on the

west and it constitutes the Lake Edward, George and Albert basins

and the Ruwenzori mountains horst block.

The rift movements have become very important through Tertiary

time, both for the filling of the Western Rift Valley, and in the later

stage (Late Pleistocene) has resulted in the general sag in the centre

of Uganda which produced the Lake Kyoga drowned valley system

and Lake Victoria. The sagging through Central Uganda caused the

reversal of the westerly flowing rivers to produce the two way flow of

the Kafu and other rivers and the drowned valley lake system of LakeKyoga.

The project site is located within the Tanzanian Craton, bounded by

the Western and Eastern branch of the East African Rift System and a

series of normal faults While the shield separating the two branches

a biotite and hornblende content with several NE trending

amphibolites dykes. Structural geology of the area is controlled by

tectonics associated with the East African Rift System. The site is

located within the shield area, but only 50-100 km from the western

rift system & about 70 km south of the Aswa fault zone.

Gneisses and granitized rocks of the Precambrian are overlain by the

flat northern part of Uganda, but form hilly terrain in the peripheral

parts of the country. In the south and south-west, the generally lessmetamorphosed Precambrian Formations give rise to a more incised

topography. The sedimentary infill of the western Rift Valley floor

produces a low relief, which is diversified in the south by the

Pleistocene lavas and ash crater fields. In the east the terrain is

dominated by Miocene volcanoes at present under various stages of

erosion. The Precambrian forming the granitized and gneissose

complex (earlier described as Basement Complex) have been

subdivided in to the following.

Wholly granitized formations – including Basement and granitized

equivalents of the cover formations

Partly granitized formations: Cover formations in general.

Non-granitized formations

Other rocks

Detailed geological and structural mapping, in and around the

Karuma Falls was not carried out till the work carried out by NORPAK

(1999). However, reccoinaitory traverses were taken by Wayland

(1933), Powell, (1956) and Gittins (1956). The regional geologicalmap of Uganda (Geochemical Atlas of Uganda, 1973) indicates that in

and around the area, predominantly undifferentiated Basement

Complex comprising granitoid gneisses including elements of Aruan

gneiss (2 600 Ma) possibly some older charnockites on the north

The Bunyoro Group is part of a poorly exposed assemblage of

sedimentary rocks exposed in Bunyoro (Hoima and Masindi) and

Lango (Maruzl County) on the north side of Lake Kyoga. The other

dominant cover sequence constituting the Kyoga Group is exposed

around Teso. The Bunyoro Group is made up of shale’s and phyllites

with larger quantities of grit and arkoses higher in the succession and

also tillites. The litho-assemblage of this group is gently folded,

unmetamorphosed and underlain by the undifferentiated BasementComplex. Outcrops of this group are recorded at the junction of the

Kampala - Gulu Highway and the Masindi - Masindi Port road,

between Kafu Bridge and Kigumba on the Bunyoro side, while a lens

abuts the Albert Nile in Maruzl County on the Lango side. A major air

photo feature (possibly Rift Fault line) and trending NE for

approximately 25 km cuts the Nile River between rivers Ayago and

Kiba.

Banded gneisses (with a tendency to be flaggy and micaceous) occur

downstream of the confluence of Juma River with the Kyoga Nile

River; gneiss with biotite occurs around the headwaters of river

Ayago and an unnamed river east of river Kamchio; while

amphlbolitic gneisses underlie areas around river Kiba. Migmatites

exhibiting contorted foliations is noticed at the bend in the Kyoga Nile

River further downstream of west of Juma River.

Powell (1956) described that exposures of Basement Complex are

confined to the Nile and the mouths of its tributaries, which have cut

down below the peneplain surface and its laterite cover. Thepeneplain surface around Kamdini appears to step along an

escarpment line normal to the Nile about one and a half miles west of

the river Juma. Above the Karuma Falls, the laterite extends to the

Nile water level At the Kamdini Hydrological Department gauging

sections proved at the Jinja dam sites. i.e., the depth to bedrock will

vary up to a maximum of between 100 and 150 ft.

The basement rocks in this area are gneisses and granulites, often

very rich in biotite and amphibole. They are well foliated and

generally composed of bands rich in minerals of micaceous habit

(amphibole, mica, and chlorite) alternating with bands rich in quartz

and feldspar. These dark and light coloured bands are often only an

inch or two thick. In the Karuma Falls section, thick layers ofhomogeneous rock are most unlikely to be found. Relatively thick

micaceous and amphibolitic rocks with quartz lenticles are sometimes

found contorted into small scale folds, particularly upstream of the

Juma River. Downstream of the Juma River, the foliation is more

regular and uniform.

GEOLOGY OF THE PROJECT AREA

Except the Diversion Structure, Diversion Channel, Power Intake

Structure and TRT outfall all other project components are proposed

to be underground. Thick forest cover, presence of elephant grass /

swamps along the river banks, abundance of wild life and about 8km

long stretch of the Project falling in Karuma Game reserve and

Conservation area were the difficulties faced during the investigation

stage. In addition, paucity of rock outcrops, except along the road

cut section near the Karuma Bridge and the river banks which in

majority of cases are inaccessible, rendered the task of geological /geotechnical interpretation along the proposed underground

structures very difficult. All efforts were taken to access the available

outcrops along the river banks and within the river, however in many

cases it was a futile exercise Mesoscopic structural data were

investigations carried out by M/S NORPAK were further corroborated

by judiciously planned and executed sub-surface investigations

during the present course of work.

RESULTS

Presentation of Results

The seismic results are presented in the form of seismic sectionsdefining the subsurface status in terms of compressional wave

velocities for each of Five(5) seismic lines. All the seismic spreads

were implanted within pre-defined position of each seismic line axis

as per the practical feasibility of seismic line.

The results are given for each of the Five(5) seismic lines. Every line

has been presented as a seismic tomogram showing the chainage at

X-axis and Depth at Y-axis. Different layers have been shown

presenting different seismic velocities with velocity contours. All

tomograms are prepared into seismic sections with Horizontal scale

1:500 and vertical scale 1:500 have been presented in natural scale

of 1:1000 on A3 size papers depending upon the length of section.

Particular Use of Terms

The term weathered is used in following paragraphs. It includes both

the mechanical and chemical weathering conditions of the rock. The

mechanical weathering includes broken up rock. No distinction hasbeen made between the two.

The term bedrock and rock relates to the rock in its massive state.

Calibration of Seismic Velocities

400 to 800 m/s : Unconsolidated overburden material Top soil

800m/s to 1200 m/s: consolidated soil,clay,sandy matrix.

1200m/s to 2000m/s: Pebbles, Cobbles & Boulders in sandy matrix.

2000 to 3500 m/s: Weathered rock layer.

3500 to 4000 : Sound bed Rock.

Bedrock consists mainly in Granite Gneisses, Quartzite with variousdegrees of weathering and fracturing.

Interpretation of Seismic Data along different Seismic Lines.

Five(5) Seismic Lines as KSP-1, KSP-2, KSP-3, KSP-4A and KSP-4B

were surveyed at TRT outfall.along the TRT alignment and MAT area

the summary results of the lines are discussed in the following

paragraphs based on the velocities calculated from Seismic Surveys.

The seismic profiles given show the seismic velocities for each

seismic unit detected by the survey. All profiles KSP-1, KSP-2, KSP-

3,KSP-4A show 3 layers,whereas KSP-4B show only two layers

Overburden and Weathered zone.

All Geo-Seismic Depth sections are

Geo-Seismic Line KSP-1 (Refer Fig:1(A) to Fig:1(C), Tomogram as

KSP-1 (610 M))

Seismic line KSP-1 covering 610m length involved laying of 122

geophones with Ten (10) number of seismic spreads with an

overlapping of 12 geophones in each and every seismic spread. A

total of 15 shots were taken using Hammer as source (2, Far shots, 2

end shots and 10 intermediate shots and 1 mid shot all intermediate

shots are taken at every even geophone all along the seismic

spread). The seismic velocities are observed in the tomograms using

Rayfract software calibrated accordingly to the Borehole KBH-12 with

the type of sub-surface material. However, it is expected that the

first layer with compressional velocities in the range of 400 m/s to2000m/sec could be related to unconsolidated overburden materials

as clayey humus rich soil, Silt, Clay probably formed by

decomposition of Biotite granite gneiss. The second layer with

recorded P-wave velocity in the range of 2000 m/sec to 3200m/sec

indicates the presence of sand with pieces of biotite granite gneiss

and Amphibolite and the Third layer with recorded velocity 3500m/s

to 4000m/s indicates the presence of sound bed rock, consisting of

medium to fine grained Biotite Granitic Gneiss, Quartz biotite gneiss,

Amphibolite with various degrees of weathering and fracturing.

The depth at every geo phone positions is given below.

Geo-Seismic Line KSP-2 (Refer Fig:2(A) to Fig:2(G), Tomogram as

KSP-2 (1875 M))

Seismic line KSP-2 covering 1875 m length involved laying of 375

Geophones with Thirty three (33) number of seismic spreads with an

overlapping of 12 geophones in each and every seismic spread. A

total of 15 shots were taken using Hammer (2, Far shots, 2 end shots

and 10 intermediate shots and 1 mid shot all intermediate shots are

taken at every even geophone all along the seismic spread). The

seismic velocities are observed in the tomograms using Rayfract

software calibrated accordingly to the Borehole KBH-2 and KBH-3

with the type of sub-surface material However, it is expected that the

first layer with compressional velocities in the range of 400 m/s to

2000m/sec could be related to unconsolidated overburden materials

as clayey humus rich soil, sand and silt. The second layer with

recorded P-wave velocity in the range of 2000 m/sec to 3200m/sec

indicates the presence of admixture of fine sand with pieces of rock

fragments partially to highly weathered granitic gneiss, Quartz and

Amphiboles and the Third layer with recorded velocity 3500m/s to4500m/s indicates the presence of sound bed rock, consisting of

Medium to coarsed grained Granitic Gneiss, Quartz, Amphibolite with

various degrees of weathering and fracturing.

The depth at every geo phone positions is given below.

Geo-Seismic Line KSP-3 (Refer Fig:3(A) to Fig:3(H), Tomogram as

KSP-3(1) (1105 M) and KSP-3(2)(1160 M))

Seismic line KSP-3 covering 1875 m length involved laying of 433

Geophones with Thirty seven (37) number of seismic spreads with an

overlapping of 12 geophones in each and every seismic spread. A

total of 15 shots were taken using Hammer (2, Far shots, 2 end shots

and 10 intermediate shots and 1 mid shot all intermediate shots are

taken at every even geophone all along the seismic spread). The Raw

seismic data is split into two(2) data segments while processing in

the RAYFRACT software. Data set one is of 1105m and data set two

is of 1160 meter care is taken to maintain the continuity of the

chainage while processing in the software. The seismic velocities are

observed in the tomograms using Rayfract software calibrated

accordingly to the Borehole KBH-4, KBH-5, KBH-7 and KBH-10 with

the type of sub-surface material. However, it is expected that the

first layer with compressional velocities in the range of 400 m/s to

2000m/sec could be related to unconsolidated overburden materials

as Clay Sand and Laterite soil. The second layer with recorded P-

wave velocity in the range of 2000 m/sec to 3200m/sec could be themixture of weathered mass, rock fragments and Boulders of Biotite

gneiss mixed with soil and clay and the Third layer with recorded

velocity 3500m/s to 4000m/s indicates the presence of sound bed

rock consisting of Biotite gneiss,Granite gneiss, Quartz and

Amphibolite with various degrees of weathering and fracturing.

The depth at every geo phone positions is given below.

Geo-Seismic Line KSP-4B (Refer Fig:4B(A) to Fig:4B(B), Tomogram

as KSP-4B (375 M))

Seismic line KSP-4B covering 375m length involved laying of 75

geophones with Eight (8) number of seismic spreads with an

overlapping of 12 geophones in each and every seismic spread. A

total of 15 shots were taken using Hammer (2, Far shots, 2 end shots

and 10 intermediate shots and 1 mid shot all intermediate shots are

taken at every even geophone all along the seismic spread). The

seismic velocities are observed in the tomograms using Rayfract

software calibrated accordingly to the Borehole KBH-8 with the type

of sub-surface material However, The seismic velocities are calibrated

with the type of sub-surface material. However, it is expected that

the first layer with compressional velocities in the range of 400 m/s

to 2000m/sec could be related to unconsolidated overburden

materials as clay sand ,silt and laterite soil. The second layer with

recorded P-wave velocity in the range of 2000 m/sec to 3200m/sec

could be the mixture of Sand with pieces of rock fragments

weathered granite gneiss, quartz and amphiboles and the third layer

with recorded velocity 3500m/s to 4000m/s indicates the presence ofsound bed rock, consisting of fine to medium grained Granitic Gneiss,

Quartz and Amphibolite with various degrees of weathering and

fracturing.

The depth at every geo phone positions is given below.

Geo-Seismic Line KSP-4A (Refer Fig:4A(A) to Fig:4A(B), Tomogram

as KSP-4A(525 M))

Seismic line KSP-4A covering 525m length involved laying of 75

geophones with Eight (9) number of seismic spreads with an

overlapping of 12 geophones in each and every seismic spread. A

total of 15 shots were taken using Hammer (2, Far shots, 2 end shots

and 10 intermediate shots and 1 mid shot all intermediate shots are

taken at every even geophone all along the seismic spread). The

seismic velocities are calibrated with the type of sub-surfacematerial. However, it is expected that the first layer with

compressional velocities in the range of 400 m/s to 2000m/sec could

be related to unconsolidated overburden materials as clay sand ,silt

and laterite soil. The second layer with recorded P-wave velocity in

the range of 2000 m/sec to 3200m/sec could be the mixture of Sand

with pieces of rock fragments weathered granite gneiss, quartz and

amphiboles and the third layer with recorded velocity 3500m/s to

4000m/s indicates the presence of sound bed rock, consisting of fine

to medium grained Granitic Gneiss Quartz and Amphibolite with

Conclusions

The Seismic Refraction Survey conducted for M/S Energy InfratechPvt Ltd for TRT Portal, TRT alignment and MAT site to Karuma Hydro

Electric Power Project (600 MW) at KARUMA in Uganda has enabled

recording of the seismic P-wave velocities and depths to subsurface

material along Five (5) seismic lines on the TRT alignment over the

site. Three (3) layers are deciphered in all the seismic lines. Using

the Boreholes KBH-2, KBH-3, KBH-4, KBH-5, KBH-7, KBH-8, KBH-

10,and KBH-12. It is expected that the first layer with compressional

velocities in the range of 400 m/s to 2000m/sec could be related to

unconsolidated overburden materials as Clay, Silt, Sand and Laterite

soil. The second layer with recorded P-wave velocity in the range of

2000 m/sec to 3200m/sec which indicates could be the mixture of

fine sand with pieces of rock fragments, weathered boulders of

granite gneiss biotite gneiss and Amphiboles and the Third layer with

recorded velocity in a range of 3500m/s to 4000m/s indicates the

presence of sound bed rock, consisting of Biotite Granitic Gneiss,

Quartz Biotite gneiss, Amphibolite with various degrees of

weathering and fracturing.
