This workshop was held as a pre-conference activity at the Agricultural Economics Association of South Africa (AEASA) 43rd annual conference at the Ranch, Polokwane, Limpopo on the 21 September 2005.

Food Security at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Training, education & capacity development Research aimed at finding practical,

sustainable solutions to food insecurity and hunger in Africa.

Dissemination of information relating to food insecurity in Africa using a variety of media.

Engagement with policy-makers and communities in Africa to facilitate the adoption of appropriate policy and effective programmes for food security in Africa.

Food Security Programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal

This workshop began scaling up current activities ahead of the establishment of the African Centre for Food Security at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg and provide a platform for sharing information from practice in addressing food insecurity and hunger in Africa

Workshop Aims: To draw together food security related

researchers and practitioners to consider policy approaches, interventions and appropriate monitoring for food security in Africa through reflection on interactive case studies, and

To share experiences and encourage adoption of appropriate policy and effective intervention and monitoring programmes for food security in Africa through discussion of ‘best practices’ and lessons learnt.

By definition …

Definitions of food security commonly include:food supply, access to food and income to acquire food, adequacy, utilisation, safety and, in some cases, cultural acceptability of food for all people at all times.

Food insecurity is simply the lack of food security that, at the extreme, is experienced as hunger.
