NovemberEvents And Activities For The Family

Directions: Select at least one activity below to complete as a family by the end of November. (Challenge: See if your family can complete all three activities.)

Bag It! James Naismith, the inventor of the game of basketball, was born on January 6, 1861. To honor his birthday, play an indoor version of this sport with your family. Place a large paper bag on a table and place a small, heavy item in the bag to keep it from moving during the game. Wad several sheets of scrap paper. Determine if you will play the game as individuals or as teams. Then have each player, in turn, stand a designated distance from the bag and try to throw a wad of paper into it. For each “basket” made, a team or individual earns a letter in the name Naismith. The first team or individual who spells Naismith wins. For added fun, try more difficult shots, such as shooting the paper wads backwards, left-handed, or with eyes closed. What a lively way to work on eye-hand coordination!

Thanksgiving Placemats Here’s a fun craft idea for decorat-ing your Thanksgiving table in fine style! At least one day before Thanks-giving, have each household member weave one or more placemats by following the directions provided. Hap-py Thanksgiving!

Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month Celebrate Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month by comparing homemade and store-bought peanut butter! With your young-ster’s help, make a batch of homemade peanut butter (see the recipe shown). Then have your child spread the peanut butter on crackers and place the treats on a plate. Ask your young-ster to prepare crackers with store-bought peanut butter in a like manner and place them on a different plate. Have each family member sample both types of peanut-butter crackers and vote for the one he or she likes best. Then help your child make a bar graph of the results and post it on the re-frigerator. Mmmm! November is a mouthwatering month!

Woven PlacematMaterials For One Placemat: two 12” x 18” sheets of colored construction paper (if desired,

use two different colors)scissorsrulerglueyarn and curling ribbon (optional)Directions: 1. Fold one sheet of construction paper in half lengthwise. 2. From the fold, cut one-inch slits, being careful to leave a

one-inch border around the edges (see the illustration). . From the second sheet of construction paper, cut length-

wise strips of varying widths. . Weave the strips of construction paper through the slits on

the first sheet as shown. If desired, weave lengths of ribbon and yarn, too. Trim lengths to the size of the mat.

5. Glue the ends of the strips, yarn, and ribbon to the mat. Allow the glue to dry.

Homemade Peanut Butter(Makes 1 cup)Ingredients:2 cups shelled peanuts 2 tablespoons vegetable oilDirections:Place the ingredients in a food processor

or blender. Blend the mixture until it is

smooth. Spoon the peanut butter into a

small bowl or dish.
