TAYPORT v GLENTANAR ly A measure of just how far Glentanar have come since they joined the Junior ranks in 1998 will be in evidence this afternoon. · In that inaugural season, Andy Sommerville's Tayport travelled to the well-appointed Woodside Sports Complex in Aberdeen and trounced the fledgling Juniors by 9-0. Steven Stewart will remember the game. His stunning overhead kick in that North /Tayside cup tie won for him the Goal of the Season award. Two years ago Glentanar , by then making steady progress and established as members of the new North Region Premier Division, lost 1-0 to Tayport on the Canniepairt in the semi-final of the North/Tayside Cup, then sponsored by NCR. Last season Glentanar finished in a highest ever, level second spot, as well as lifting the Acorn Heating Cup and losing the Grill League Cup on penalties. Progress has been maintained and, already this season, the Grill League Cup is in the trophy cabinet and a serious championship challenge is underway. Glens ventured south to play Neilston in the OVD Scottish Cup and returned north with a 1-1 draw , only to lose narrowly in the replay at Woodside. Given that Neilston gave Lochee United the fright of their lives in the OVD the other week, Glentanar's capabilities should in no way be in question. Manager Gary Forbes has masterminded Glentanar's onfield progress to see the club established amongst the North's creme de la ere.me. The core of the side which played at Canniepairt in April two years ago is still there. Somers has moved to Sunnybank ( where he was sent off last week v Glentanar), Lonie is at Highland League Keith and ex­Dundee Jerry O'Driscoll is also in the Highland League, with Huntly.

Among the new faces are strikers Stevie Bartlett from Buckie, Alan Cooper from For­martine, defender Anthony Henry from Huntly and midfielder Vinny Mars who is ex Peterhead. Bartlett was on the mark in last week's 2-1 win at Sunnybank, but it is still Colin Pirie who will be the big goal threat. Pirie hit a hat trick in the 4-2 Grill Cup Final win v Stonehaven and notched the double which ended Vale of Clyde's OVD aspirations earlier this season. Manager Burgess' team selection is anyone's guess. Gareth Dailly was laid low by a mi­graine attack last week but should be ok. Allan Ramsay will likely still be out and also missing today will be Derek Wemyss (injured) and Brian Livie (Labour Party Confer­ence) but it's probable that Paterson and Morris will return.

One thing clear, is that Tayport will find today's game one of the biggest cup challenges they have faced so far on the Canniepairt this season. The game goes to extra time before ending in penalties if still all square.

8dia matters The Fife Herald (4/3/05) takes the accolades this week with a full back page devoted to last week's tie v Dundonald, along with a preview of to­day ' s tie. But what made the page stand out were the action colour pho­tos from the match. Both photos were good action shots with interesting crowd detail as a background. What the punters must be wondering, however, is the identity of the guy with the flat cap sitting on the 'Port bench. Yep, it's Tom Borland, standing in for Norrie Marshall and des­perately waiting for someone to go down injured! The Evening Telegraph (28/2/05) also had an action shot from the Dun­dooald game but, with featureless trees as a background, failed to cap-ture the atmosphere of the Herald photos. ·

Gary Middleton's hat trick didn't just get himself a back page portrait in the Fife Herald - again - but a half page colour shot in Monday's (28/2/05) Daily Record 'The Winner' pull-out. The photo captured Gary in typical celebratory mood. The Record also carried a match report with Gus Malone providing assistance to the reporter by supplying the quote s. Smokey ' s treble, the first from a Port player since Ralph Hunter v Downfield last season, also saw him grab the headlines in the Evening Telegraph (28/02/05).

The Sun (28/03/05) carried a report on a Auchinleck v Lugar Boswell Ayrshire Cup tie as its main feature, but the report of the game was overshadowed by the emphasis the article placed on next week's OVD Cup tie v Lugar and Tayport.

Lugar's 18 goal 'hitman' Pat Walker has netted in every round of the Scottish and he told The Sun's Scott Campbell that Lugar will be no easy touches and when they play Tayport, they'll be looking to add an­other scalp to those of Sauchie and Newtongrange Star. For the record , Lugar went down 1-0 to a late goal.

Tayport over ·': first hurdle , TAYSIDE JUNIOR FA con­firmed that Tayport will be applying at the SJFA annual meeting for membership {writes Our Junior Correspondent) .

The regional assocat ion unan­imously accept ed their applica ­tion at their last meetin g and now await confirmat ion from the association's annual meeting.

Tayport have been playing in the Midlands Amateur League for a number of season s and have had a measured amount of success.

Tayport have extremely good facilities, a sound financial base and what is most important, a hard-work ing committ ee.

The association al so con­firmed that they will play for a new cup next season sponsor ed by Whyte & Mackay . The spon­sorship is valu ed at about £300 and the winners will each re­ceive a gift. This competition 1 will be played on a home and · away basis .

Good a fternoon and a warm welcome to the Canniepairt to both sets of sup­port ers for this afternoon' s Dugout Cup tie between Tayport and Glentanar.

Our opp onents sit in mid table in the North Sup er League but we know they ar e one of th e fancied team s to win that title this season. The y have played a lot fewer gam es th an th eir rivals and, if they win most of th eir games in hand , they will top the tabl e. So, we ar e under no illusions that thi s is going to be a very tough en­count er .

Rec entl y our form has picked up considerably with the team again playing with confid ence. I think this showed last week in our 4-0 home win against Dundonald Bluebell in the Redwood Leisure Cup.

Person ally, I think the scoreline could have been mor e, as we dominated the gam e for long periods, especially in the second half , when every time we went fonvard we looked as ifwe might score.

We took th e opportunity to make a few change s from the week before, to fre shen up th e team and give some of the players who haven't featured re­centl y the opportunity to show what they could do and they all did very well.

One of those missing was Roberto Morris who was injured against Gle­nafton and we felt that with him, Scott Peters and John Ward all play­ing for Scotland against Petershill last Sunday, we didn't want to jeop ­ardise his chances of getting through to the final squad. By all accounts the lads did very well and look to have done enough to book their places in the team. Well done, lads, it's a great honour for both your selves and the club.

Against Dundonald we only had a Robbie Henderson strike to show for our first half efforts, although there were a few close thing s around the opposition box. I felt that we were playing well within our selves and stressed that at the half time team talk. ·

With Gareth Dailly feeling unwell, we brought Gary Middleton into the team at the interval to add to our goal threat , and what an impact he made with a great goal one minute into the second period, when le lobbed the ' keeper from 30 yards. It was the start of what was to be a very good afternoon's work for Smokie, as he went on the complete his bat trick with another two fine strikes.

Not that it was a one man show , as the entire team performed well, with the defence looking tight in giving nothing away, a strong midfield led by the impressive Scott Peters and our strikers looking a real threat in and around the Dundonald box.

All good signs as we enter the final third of what could be a great sea­son for us, but we will be reminding the lads that we must perform at a high level every week, if we want to fulfil our ambitions and go on to add to our impressive trophy haul from our previous campaigns, and that level must be reached today against a very capable Glentanar side.

How the local press reported the last meeting of the teams

There was a positive outcome to Saturday's match, with Tayport reaching a second cup final of the season, by virtue of a narrow semi-final win against North outfit , G lentanar, in the inter-regional NCR Trophy. lnterestingly , 'Port's ·opponents in the tournament final will be Tayside rivals North End, whose co-manager , Paul Reilly , will be keen to exact revenge for last week's home league defeat against his former club .

Other than reaching the final, however, the 'Port support had little else to cheer , on an afternoon of few highlights . The game had begun in an encouraging fashion when Brian Craik's diving header tested the visiting 'keeper, Carson Riches, in the fast minute , then , moments later, Gareth Dailly opened the scoring with a curling free kick, which the custo­dian could not keep out. Given that Glentanar boss, Gary Forbes, was in charge when Tayport rattled in nine without reply on the last occasion the sides met, back in 1999, he must have been fearing the worst. Ultimately, though , only Dailly's early strike would separate the teams.

Tayport certainly dominated , retaining possession for lengthy periods of time , but, despite constantly probing for openings , could not add to their tally. This left Tayport chief Dave Baikie somewhat frustrated . "We got into good areas several times , but the final ball was lacking. Jonathan Mitchell's pace down the right, for instance , caused Glentanar prob­lems, although he couldn't quite find the end product," said Baikie in a post-match inter­view.

Towards half-time, the Canniepairt men almost paid for their slackness in the final third of the park, when Glentanar's Martin Ross appeared in the 'Port box to crack a shot be­yond Frazer Fitzpatrick, only to see the ball rebound off the woodwork .

The best efforts of the second period came from midfielder Allan Ramsay, who did his utmost to instil some urgency into his team's display, but they were to no avail and even substitute Davie Evans missed the target , after having been played in by Brian Craik's knockdown, in the closing stages of the encow1ter.

" A potentially tough afternoon awaits " says

No doubts as to the star of the show in the Redwood Leisure Cup tie against Dundonald last weekend. The first half had been a fairly mundane affair, notable only for Robbie Henderson's opening goal, following good work by Sean Christie.

It was only with the introduction of Gary Middleton, just before half~time, that Tayport really sparked into life. Never one to shirk a shooting oppor­tunity, Smokey delighted the home support with two exceptionally well­taken goals, one of which came a mere fifteen seconds after the interval.

The finishes, which stunned the battling Bluebell, came either side of a less spectacular close-range effort, as Middleton claimed his first ever Tayport treble.

At the back, 'Port were typically solid, and this aspect of the team is obvi­ously vital to success. The qualities typified by Middleton, however, could well make the big difference when the silverware is eventually handed out.

That time, of course, is still a long way off, but each match plays its part, including this fixture against Glentanar. Although, by the time you read this, the story's probably been picked up by the national press. Kello Rovers from Kirkconnell, the most southerly situated Junior club, has struck it rich. Kello's president, Jim Campbell, ever looking for funding sources as we all are, thought he'd drop Gretna's multi millionaire chairman, Brooks Mileson, a line asking if he could help. It was a shot in the dark, but it hit the target and the philanthropic Brooks has given Kello £10 grand a year for the next three years as well as strips and training gear.

Where's the Heathcote Cup? That's the question posed by elderly football follower Sandy Ran kine. Sandy tells S11out that the cup was contested between the wars by the schools in Tayport, Newport and Wormit as well as the boys from the Mars ship which was anchored in the Tay (The Mars accommodated juvenile delin­quents in those days). Presented by Captain Heathcote of The Mars, the cup had been won by Tayport in its last few years, during the early 1930s and has never been seen since. So, thoughts are that it could be in a shed or an attic, somewhere in Tayport. Another query from Sandy. Anybody have any record of a Tayport football team known as Tayport Red Star? The most observant of Port supporters at last week's game v Dundonald Bluebell would have noticed the absence of physio Norrie Marshall, who bad been struck down with 'flu. Into the bag-carrying breach stepped that man for all seasons, Tom Borland. With the minutes ticking away, surely Tom would he called into action, but No, for the first time in four years the services of the sponge man weren't called upon and Tom missed out on his big chance!

Still on the topic of sponge men , reminds us that former club treasurer and occa­sional sponge man Ross Macmillan officially retired from work yesterday. Best of luck in your retirement, Ross. Ross and the sponge bag prompts the memory of the time during the amateur days of the club when a Tayport player went down injured on the far side of the park. Ross raced across the park at breakneck speed, knelt down beside the injured player, went in to his heavy duty carrier bag, to dis­cover two flasks of hot orange! Never again was the water and sponge put in an identical bag to the half-time drinks! Ross , of course, claimed that the Vitamin C would do the player the world of good .
