CAMDEN TOWN STATION CAPACITY UPGRADE CONSULTATION 2015
1 INTRODUCTION
We are proposing to substantially upgrade the capacity of Camden Town station. We are holding a public consultation from 12 October until 11 December 2015.
Camden is a unique and exciting area with a wide range of passengers using the station. We’re keen to deliver an upgrade that will give Camden the station it deserves.
We would like your views on:
• The need for a larger station
• A possible option for a new station entrance
Your comments will help us develop our proposals which are at an early design stage. As our proposals develop, and before we apply for powers to upgrade the station, there will be further chances to give your views.

2 THE NEED FOR THE SCHEME - CURRENT SITUATION
• More and more people have been using the station, with a 60 per cent increase over the past ten years
• The station is too small for current demand creating crowding and queuing
• Passengers entering, leaving and changing between trains have to cross paths, creating congestion and delays
• There are only two escalators, so to manage the station safely we have to make these one-way at busy times
• There is no step-free access
• On Saturdays, passengers entering have to use a spiral staircase down to platform level
• On Sunday afternoons the station is exit-only
• At these times many passengers have to use other stations or buses

3 THE NEED FOR THE SCHEME - FUTURE DEMAND• As London continues to grow with increases in
employment and housing, Camden Town will see an increase in demand for use of the station
• Passenger numbers will continue to rise as we deliver other improvements to the Northern line service and stations
• Passengers will have to wait more regularly to enter the station
• At the bottom of the escalators queuing and congestion will get worse
• The weekend one-way systems may have to be used on weekdays
• By 2031, demand will exceed what the station can handle by 7,000 in the mornings and 12,000 in the evenings

5 WIDER BENEFITS OF THE SCHEME
The Camden Town Station Capacity Upgrade is part of a large investment programme to transform the Northern line:
• A signalling upgrade which has achieved a 20 per cent increase in capacity through central London
• Proposed 24-hour Night Tube service on Fridays and Saturdays between Morden and High Barnet / Edgware via Charing Cross
• Plans to increase capacity and improve stations at Elephant & Castle, Tottenham Court Road and Bank
For the Northern line
• EnablefuturecapacitybenefitsontheNorthernline
For the local area
• Support for the vibrant local community and economy
• Potentially reduced walking time between the station and the north part of Camden Town, including Camden Lock
• Station remains open to the public during busy periods

6 FUTURE CONSULTATIONS
In addition to consulting on our initial proposals for a station capacity upgrade, next year we will also be gathering public feedback on:
• Ways to improve the public space outside the station entrance
• The building above the station entrance, which is likely to be residential
We will work closely with Camden Council to make sure we complement the area’s unique identity and character.
The building above the station would require a separate planning application to Camden Council.
