Solomon made a deal with King Hiram of Tyre to

purchase cedars and firs from Lebanon.

4

King Hiram would deliver them down

the coast of the Mediterrean to Joppa.

1 Kings 6 1 And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month Zif, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the LORD.

David reigned 7 years in Hebron; total 40.

7

We are not going to read the entire description of the building of the temple, but there are some very

interesting points to see from chapter six.

8

(V 2-3) A cubit was about 18 inches. So the temple was 90 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 45 feet high. It was not large; it had only 2,700 square feet of floor space. But it was strikingly beautiful in appearance because of its white limestone, cedar, and gold exterior. It had a large open front porch (portico) that added 15 more feet to its length.

4 And for the house he made windows of narrow lights. 5 And against the wall of the house he built chambers round about, against the walls of the house round about, both of the temple and of the oracle: and he made chambers round about:

10

7 And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.

Solomon had respect unto the house of God, even before it was built.

That’s a good conviction to hold to.

11

11 And the Word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying, 12 Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in My Statutes, and execute My Judgments, and keep all My Commandments to walk in them; then will I perform My Word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father: 13 And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake My people Israel.

Did Solomon do as God had said?

No. He married many foreign women and

began to follow after their gods.

The kingdom was split under the rule of his son.

Later both the northern half and the southern half were taken into slavery.

13

14 So Solomon built the house, and finished it.

The good cannot outweigh the evil.

Ecclesiastes 7 8 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

Solomon finished the temple, but then he went astray.

37 In the fourth year (of Solomon’s reign) was the foundation of the house of the LORD laid, in the month Zif: 38 And in the eleventh year (of Solomon’s reign), in the month Bul, which is the eighth month, was the house finished throughout all the parts thereof, and according to all the fashion of it. So was he seven years in building it.

Much time, labor, and expense.

15

The building of the temple was a very good work, but no good works can cancel out disobedience.

Matthew 4 4 But Jesus answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by Every Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Abundant life

16

Proverbs 30 5 Every Word of God is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him.

We put our trust in God as we obey Him.

Every Word!

17

Proverbs 1 30 They would none of My Counsel: they despised all My Reproof. 31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

One who truly loves the Lord will not demand his own way.

He will walk in

God’s footsteps.

John 14 21 He that hath My Commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: …

John 14 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love Me, he will keep My Words: and My Father will love him, and We will come unto him, and make Our abode with him.

19

Both faith in God and the love of God produce obedience to the

Word of God.To love and trust God is more than mere words.

It is a way of life.

Let’s finish well.
