The phrase Web 2.0 refers to a perceived second generation of web-based communities and hosted services — such as social-networking sites, wikis and folksonomies — which aim to facilitate collaboration and sharing between users.
Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to Web technical specifications, but to changes in the ways software developers and end-users use the web as a platform.
According to Tim O'Reilly, "Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as the platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform."
Web 2.0
Web 2.0 Mashups
6© KONGSBERG April 21, 2023
A mashup is a web application that combines data from more than one source into an integrated experience.
Paul Rademacher's housingmaps.com, which combines Google Maps with Craigslist apartment rental and home purchase data to create an interactive housing search tool, is the pre-eminent example of such a mashup.
7KONGSBERG April 21, 2023
Discovery Portal™
Discovery Portal combines data from LWD, drilling instrumentation, MWD, weather, equipment monitoring, to create an interactive tool for making rapid decisions and to make oil and gas operations safer and more efficient. It is the pre-eminent example of a mashup in the oil and gas industry.

Web 2.0 Data focused solutions
Every significant Web 2.0 internet application to date has been backed by a specialized database:
Google's web crawl,
Yahoo!'s directory (and web crawl),
Amazon's database of products,
eBay's database of products and sellers,
MapQuest's map databases,
Napster's distributed song database.
Database management is a core competency of Web 2.0 companies, so much so that we have sometimes referred to these applications as "infoware" rather than merely software.

Web 2.0 Web Services for Drilling
A web service is a software application that allows transfer of data via the internet or that allows access to other remote software applications using an XML-based language.
WITSML is an XML standard designed for the drilling environment to allow transfer of data for remote viewing or for automated loading into software applications used in real-time decision-making.

Mass Collaboration for Drilling Decisions
Mass Collaboration requires a platform for interoperability between people, software, and systems from many different Vendors, Decision Makers, and Support Personnel in Real-Time
Mass Collaboration requires instant Access to all data on the rig and in the office:
– For Viewing of Raw Data
– By Applications for automated calculations
– For Viewing of Results data

What makes an application a Web 2.0 Application?
Strategic Positioning
The Web as the Platform (facilitated by WITSML)
User Positioning
You Control your own data (SiteCom accepts data at the Source)
Core Competencies
Services, not packaged software (Applications access data using SOAP messaging)
Architecture of Participation (ANYONE with the correct authentication can participate)
Cost Effective Scalability (.net platform is scalable to 1000s of wells and data sources)
Remixable data source and data transformation (Vendor Neutral – Mix and Match)
Software above the level of a single device (View data on rig, office, handheld, phone, etc.)
Harnessing Collective Intelligence (Experts can contribute Regardless of their location)
Definition that was developed at the first WEB 2.0 brainstorming session
46© KONGSBERG April 21, 2023WORLD CLASS – through people, technology and dedication
a lot of talk about Web 2.0, web mashups, Ajax etc., which in my mind are all facets of the same phenomenon: that information and presentation are being separated in ways that allow for novel forms of reuse.”

Wikipedia Analogy
Wikipedia is a web-based project for the creation of an up-to-date real-time encyclopedia and is written collaboratively by volunteers from all around the world. It’s articles can be edited by anyone with access to the Internet, simply by clicking the edit this page link.
SiteCom is a web-based platform for the creation of an up-to-date real-time drilling decision making environment. Raw data, quality controlled data, and results of advanced calculations are provided collaboratively by professionals from all around the world. These professionals can be in the field, in the asset team, associated with supporting vendors or partners, or by anyone with access to the Internet, with the correct user identification credentials.
