An invasive species can take over its new environment (due to a lack of predators and an imbalance in the ecosystem). This can cause a lack of biodiversity (the variety of plant and animal life in a given environment). An invasive species may be considered invasive in one part of the world, and nave to another. What organisms are invasive to Louisiana? We have several organisms that are causing damage to our ecosystem here in Louisiana. One of the most infamous is the Nutria, the large rodent who eats the roots of wetland plants; this contributes to coastal erosion. Another core invasive species that we have here is the Chinese Tallow Tree. These trees grow very quickly, and do not need very many resources (water and sunlight) to grow. Because of this, they are very expensive to remove and can steal resources (water and sunlight) from other nave species.

TV 10 Food for Families Looking for a way to give back this holiday season? Have your 4-H club and school hold a canned food drive! You can invite other clubs at your school to be a part of this giving tradition across Acadiana! Take a picture of the cans your club collects and email it to Ms. Cassandra at [email protected] . Your club may be featured on our social media pages! The Food For Families drive will take place on Tuesday, December 4th from 5am—8pm at the Cajundome.

Hi to our Newest 4th & 5th grade Members!

Welcome to 4-H! My name is Clover and I’ve been in 4-H for many, many years. I’m so excited that you have joined this great club and I hope you have a great year. I wrote you a note on the inside cover of your Discovering the World of 4-H booklet, special for all 4th and 5th grade 4-H members. Read it as soon as you can get started. The booklet has about 40 pages. If you work on it at a steady pace or about 10 pages a month, you’ll have everything finished by the February 22nd deadline. Look for my note in each Hotline, so I can help you keep up with your book. I know the book inside and out, therefore, I’ll give you hints on what to do and when.

Several activities take a while to complete, so it’s a good idea to start those activities now. A good place to start is to learn the 4-H Pledge, 4-H Emblem and fun facts about the program on pages 1-3. The next section is on “Healthy Living.” When Discovering the World of 4-H, you will learn about health and safety, fitness, and food and nutrition. It is very important to learn emergency numbers in the case of an emergency and to have these handy. You will learn how to measure ingredients, use equipment in the kitchen, follow recipes, to eat and plan healthful meals using My Plate logo or ChooseMyPlate.gov. When Exploring the World of 4-H, you will learn the basics of child development, consumer decision making, nutrition, school bus safety, and manners. The 4-H personal development project helps you be your best! You will learn about manners and personal hygiene and be given tips that will prepare you to feel comfortable and be successful. Good manners show you are kind and thoughtful. Remember, being polite is always right!

No store bought cookies can be entered. Bring your cookies to school the day of your club meeting.

You may enter more than one category. One cookie can be entered in only one category.

Christmas Cookie Contest Join Team JUNIOR LEADER! It’s still not too late for 8-12 graders to join the Lafayette Parish 4-H Junior Leadership Club. The next scheduled meeting of the Junior Leadership Club is Tuesday, November 20th at the 4-H Office following the po-boy sale at 2:00 p.m. After the meeting, Junior Leaders are invited to come bowling with us at Rock-n-Bowl.

The Junior Leader Club is involved in service-learning projects throughout the year. We will be focusing on the dangers of fumes related to cancer at our monthly meeting. There is something for everyone, so get involved!

experience firsthand the basics behind agricultural production. A field tour will give an up close look at rice production. Service–Learning Last month, we explained service–

learning and how each step in the cycle leads to the next. This month, we will cover student and community ownership. It occurs where the process doesn’t end with the completion of the service activity. An activity may be completed, but service-learning is a continuing process, where young people, and communities are always growing.

“YOUTH VOICE” means the inclusion of young people as a meaningful part of the creation and implementation of service opportunities. Youth voice enables young people to build upon service-learning and to act as advocates for social change.

When developing your project, remember to consider identifying various networks within a community, recruit and target partners from the private, public, and citizen sectors in a community. Next, identify leadership within the community such as club officers, elected officials, etc. These groups can assist in advancing your project.

It’s important to increase “youth voice” in our programs. Today’s youth strongly believe that they can make the world a better place and they can, we have to allow them the opportunities. Next month, we will focus on identifying a genuine community need.

Get a head start on project/record books this year by taking part in the 4-H Record Book Workshops. We are offering two workshops this year on two separate dates for the different age groups.

The first is for 6th-12th grade members that will be completing the 4-H Portfolio that includes the leadership and citizenship portions of the project along with their 4-H story and will be held on January 3rd from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Lafayette Parish Extension office located at 1010 Lafayette Street, Suite 325, in Lafayette.

The second is for Discovering the World of 4-H and Exploring the World of 4-H session for 4th and 5th graders. If you would like assistance with your project books you should make an effort to attend the workshop scheduled for January 3rd, at Lafayette Parish Extension office located at 1010 Lafayette Street, Suite 325, in Lafayette, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. To attend, please call 291-7090.

To attend, please pre-register 4-Her’s before December 21st by calling the office at 291-7090 so we can get an accurate head count.
