T here’s a reason the Claiborne Pell Bridge was chosen as the symbol of the Ocean State on the Rhode Island quarter — perhaps no other vista so typifies the beauty and majesty of our state. The longest suspen-sion bridge in New England, the span can be seen on a clear day from

the tops of buildings in Providence and all the way out to Martha’s Vineyard. At night, its glowing lights create a magnificent silhouette against the sky — and at sunset, it rises starkly amid a breathtaking scene of water and sky.

T he elegant mansion at Blithewold is a spectacular setting for a wedding or other formal affair, but it’s the estate’s 33 acres of gardens and lawns that

beckon Rhode Islanders. The many manicured gardens, featuring everything from roses to rocks, are what earned Blithewold a spot in Yankee Magazine’s list of the Best 5 Public Gardens in New England in 2010. And the 10-acre Great Lawn, which sweeps down to Narragansett Bay, is a beloved spot for a picnic with a view.

I nstantly recognizable life-size bronze bulls famously mark the entrance to Colt State Park, an oasis of natural beauty perched on the edge of Nar-ragansett Bay that is beloved by Rhode Islanders who like to hike, bike, kayak, swim, fish, toss a Frisbee, fly a kite, walk a dog, hunt seashells, take

photos, play ball, suntan, barbecue or just generally be outdoors. A favorite spot for family and group gatherings, the clean, well-maintained, 464-acre park is renowned for a spectacular shoreline, scenic panoramas and good times.

D ePasquale Square, in the heart of Providence’s Italian neighborhood, is Rhode Island’s own little piece of Italy right here at home. On many warm nights, music and dancing fill the quaint, cobblestoned square while diners

crowd outdoor tables for a cappuccino or Italian meal. Overflowing planters add to the colorful, romantic atmosphere, and the grand fountain at the center of it all is a magnet for the eye and for children. DePasquale Square is prime Rhode Island real estate for lovers and people-watching.

T he First Baptist Church in America — sometimes called the First Baptist Meetinghouse — attracts visitors both locally and from around the world for its history and beauty. The church, founded by Roger Williams in 1638, was designated a National

Historic Landmark in 1960 and listed on the National Register of His-toric Places in 1966; the architecture is an unusual and handsome blend of English Georgian and simple, traditional New England meetinghouse style. Inside, the church abounds with authentic historical touches. In addition to services, First Baptist is a popular venue for concerts, talks, Roger Williams Attic sales, and special events.

S later Mill, the first water-powered cotton textile mill in North America and the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution, has long been a source of pride for Rhode Island-

ers. In addition to bragging rights, the enormous yellow mill building is prized as a living museum of textile manufacturing — with gigantic old machines that awe and delight. Now part of the Slater Mill Historic Site, this National Historical Landmark on the banks of the Blackstone River in Pawtucket is also home to two other historical buildings.

T he well-preserved Crescent Park Looff Carousel is famous, and not just with children. Carousel fans from across the globe make pilgrimages here to gawk at the hand-carved horses, chariots and lone camel created

by carousel master Charles I. D. Looff in 1895, easily making it the No. 1 tourist attraction in East Providence.  A classic Looff  “hippo-drome” building, a brass ring game, an organ, elaborate decorative panels, beveled mirrors, glass jewels and more combine to make this a truly magical and memorable experience.

H aven Brothers Diner, one of the oldest restaurants on wheels in the nation, is famous for many reasons:  It has been on the “Today Show” and “Family Guy,” among other TV shows, and even in the movie “Dumb and Dumber to.”

It’s a well-known after-hours spot for Rhode Island politicians to gather, chat and grab a tube steak. It has awesome food. Its shiny steel trailer has been parked in its reserved spot on the side of Providence City Hall from 4 p.m. until the wee hours every day for decades. Night after night, year after year, hungry Rhode Islanders can count on Haven Brothers serving up burgers and shakes, hot dogs, fries and fried dough galore.

T here used to be a lot more to The Towers. The building was originally part of the wildly popular

Narragansett Pier Casino resort, which burned in 1900, leaving only the granite Towers standing.  But that hardly made the venue less popular or less recognizable. Today, the meticulously restored Towers literally tower over Ocean Drive, hosting weddings, dances, dinners, plays and special events, and still offering outstanding views of the adjacent Narragansett Town Beach.

A s if their sheer beauty wasn’t enough, the majestic and dramatic Mohegan Bluffs became indelibly etched in the minds of Rhode Islanders in August 1993, when erosion of the green clay bluffs forced the removal of the precariously perched Block Island Southeast

Lighthouse. In a monumental and avidly watched operation, the lighthouse was rolled more than 300 feet inland from the edge of the ragged cliff to keep it from toppling into the ocean. At the bottom of the nearly 3-mile-long bluffs is a rocky but serene beach. From the top, the view of the Atlantic spreads out before you endlessly.

T his vast, rambling Victorian-style waterfront hotel with its trademark warm yellow exterior has been instantly recognizable to generations of Rhode Islanders — even though, since 2010, they are gazing

on a new building that re-creates the original 1868 hotel. Famed for its prime location on a windswept bluff overlooking its own pristine beach, and for its top ratings from AAA and Forbes, the hotel is a favorite for special events as well as vacation stays. No walk around scenic Watch Hill is complete without pausing to gape at Ocean House, especially in the rosy glow of sunset.

U pon the long-awaited opening of Providence City Hall on Nov. 14, 1878, The Providence Journal dubbed it “Our Municipal Palace.” The tall, elegant building, faced with Westerly granite on two sides, has been a solid, dominating presence down-

town ever since. Its sweeping front steps are a convenient meeting place for Rhode Islanders, as well as a common perch for those eating at Haven Broth-ers movable diner. Some say the old building, which is now on the National Register of Historic Places, is haunted — but its biggest claim to fame may be that it was the haunt of the colorful late Mayor Vincent A. “Buddy” Cianci Jr.

R hode Islanders know in our heart of hearts that it isn’t really the Superman building, but no one is going to stop us from calling it that. (At its comple-tion in 1928, it was christened the Industrial Trust Tower, and through the years has been known by the names of other banks that have occu-

pied it.) Bearing a striking resemblance to the Art Deco building that Superman flies from at the start of every episode of the 1950s TV hit, our Superman building is also the tallest skyscraper in Rhode Island, at 26 stories, and a distinctive part of Provi-dence’s skyline. In days gone by, a blue light shining forth from the building’s steeple lantern signaled to Rhode Islanders that they were near home. Today, the Superman building is vacant and dark as it awaits its next role as a downtown superhero.

N either the largest nor the most elaborate of old vaudeville theaters, the Stadium Theatre has charmed audiences for decades with its small-town feel and big-name entertainment. The old

theater, which dates to 1926, was handsomely restored in the late 1990s after fundraising efforts that went viral in north-ern Rhode Island and beyond. Peter and Bobby Farrelly, who grew up in nearby Cumberland, even chose the Stadium for the world premieres of two of their hit movies. And in a state where few people want to venture far from home, many will make the trip to Woonsocket to revisit this little gem.

C ornelius Vanderbilt’s 70-room Italian Renaissance "cottage" continues to awe more than 100 years after it was built and

elaborately furnished. Instantly recognizable as a symbol of Newport’s Gilded Age opulence, The Breakers has been a top tourist draw in Rhode Island for years. In addition to the splendid marble, rare woods and art inside, The Breakers is prized for its ocean views. And from the Cliff Walk, we prize the view of the majestic mansion rising from its vast manicured lawn.

S ome 327,000 cubic feet of sculpted white Georgia marble, the fourth-largest self-supported marble dome in the world, and 109 floodlights make the Rhode Island State House a splendid sight day and night, inside and out. Atop

all this grandeur, some 278 feet above the ground, stands the golden 11-foot Independent Man, representing Roger Williams’ — and Rhode Islanders’ — spirit of freedom and independence. Eye-catch-ing at any time, the R.I. State House is never more so than when it is illuminated to make a statement: pink to support breast cancer research, for example, orange to recognize gun-violence victims, and red, white and blue for Independence Day.

Jewish synagogue in North America and a universal symbol of religious freedom.  The exquisite Georgian-style house of worship is the site of an annual reading of
