Leonardo DaVinci Third Grade Google Earth Lesson

Day 1, Unit Introduction: Overview: Who was Leonardo DaVinci?

Objectives and Goals

Students will be learning about Leonardo’s life as an inventor, scientist and artist through a visual discussion using http://www.slideshare.net/. This presentation will link the students to my http://earth.google.com/ . Here, students will explore the geographical location of Italy, Leonardo’s birthplace and the home of the famous Mona Lisa.

Procedures and Activities

As students enter the room, the teacher will introduce the new lesson by having the image of Leonardo displayed on the front screen.

Using http://www.slideshare.net/ students will view images of Leonardo, his paintings and his notebook invention sketches to students.

During this lecture, the teacher will allow questions as necessary so that students can inquire and create discussion points.

One of the first slides will specifically detail a journey to Italy through a 3-Dimensional aerial view of the earth. http://earth.google.com/

We will begin by pinpointing their current location in the art room as a point of reference. We will then travel across the Atlantic Ocean and Europe to Italy, settling in on Vinci, Italy and

locate this birth place and reason for his last name. We will discuss a broader view of the globe to allow students to see where Italy sits in relation to

Africa, Germany and other countries. This will allow us to continue on to Paris, France- where his infamous painting the Mona Lisa

resides. This location holds a pinpoint which displays The Louvre Museum. Here students will use an embedded quiz from my Google docs to demonstrate what they learned in the presentation.

Assessment:

Google Earth: After completion of the Slideshare, students will focus on the last pinpoint, where they will go through a quiz that holds information from the class discussion. We will go back to this point to review and give the teacher an understanding of what they need more information and input on. My docs are also viewed at http://docs.google.com/?hl=en&tab=wo&pli=1#owned-by-me
