Course Selection Process

• Follows ESD Policy on Student Achievement and Evaluation .

• Part of the course selection process involves meeting with students, Grade 9 teachers, and parents to explain course selections for the high school program.

Policy Governing Course Selection

• Registration into Academic Courses guided by:– Students entering from Grade 9 must, at minimum, obtain a passing grade in the subject for which they plan to enroll.

– Students entering from Grade 9 must obtain a recommendation from their Grade 9 subject teacher for the high school course in which they wish to register.

• Registration into Advanced Courses are governed by the individual school.

– Example: Final grade of at least 80% in Science 9 recommended for entry to Science 1206 (sem).

Overview of Graduation Requirements• "Credit" system in effect since Sept. 1983.• New requirements effective Sept. 2005.• 36 credits required for graduation (regular course load is 14 credits each year).

– 8 Language Arts credits (6 core & 2 optional Lang. Arts credits).– 4 Math credits and 4 Science credits.– 4 Social Studies credits (2 World & 2 Can. Studies credits).– 2 credits in "Career Development."– 2 credits in "Fine Arts."– 2 credits in "Physical Education/Healthy Living."– 4 "Other Required" credits.– 6 credits from "Any Subject Area.“– At least 20 credits have to be beyond Level 1 courses, at least 9 credits have to be beyond Level 2 courses, no more then 4 local course credits

Overview of Graduation Requirements

• 7 different courses can satisfy more than one graduation requirement (see bottom of sheet)

• Students will need to decide which requirement each course will satisfy.

– One course cannot be used to satisfy 2 different graduation requirements (it's either/or).

Career Development 2201

• Required for Graduation, but course not ready until Sept. 2006.

• 30 hour Community Service component required to be completed over 3 years of high school.

• At the earliest, students will be able to do this course while in Level 2.

Planning for Post-secondary Education

• Graduation from high school does not guarantee admission into Post-secondary programs.• Students need to take the 'right' courses needed for admission (admission requirements vary and depend on the program).•MUN requires an academic program.• 3 year CONA programs usually require academic Math, however, non-academic English is accepted for ALL Programs.

Section A - Language Arts (Core)

• English 1201:– Academic Stream.

– Minimum requirement: 50% in English 9.

– Recommended: at least 60% in English 9.

– To satisfy the 2 "Optional Language Arts" credits, it is recommended for students in the academic stream to take Writing 2203 in Level 1 (see Section E).

• English 1202:– Non-academic stream.

– To graduate, students will need 2 "Optional Language Arts" credits (Section E).

– Along with English 1202, students should consider taking English 1200 if recommended by teacher (Section E - "Optional Language Arts").

• Science 2200:– General stream.

• Science 1206 (Full Year):– Required for Academic status (DOE).

– Prerequisite for Chemistry 2202 and Physics 2204.

– Minimum requirement: 50% in Science 9.

– Recommended: at least 60% in Science 9.

– For students planning to take AP Chemistry in Level 3.

– Completing 4 credits in Level 1 provides students with more flexibility to complete additional science courses in their 3 years at high school.

– Recommended: at least 80% in Science 9.

• Canadian Studies:– 2 credits required to graduate.

– Students should satisfy this requirement in Level 1 by selecting one of:

• Canadian Geography 1202, or

• Canadian Issues 1209, or

• Canadian History 1201.

• World Studies:– 2 credits required to graduate.

– Students can satisfy this requirement in Level 2 or 3.

• 2 streams of FI (Early and Late).• Students in both streams are required to select:

– Français 1202 (Block D), and

– Geog. Can. 1232 (Block D).

More about the French Immersion Program

• For a FI designation, students need to complete 6 French Language Credits (Fran. 1202, 2202, and 3202)

• These may be used to satisfy "Optional Language Arts" (2 credits) and "Other Required" (4 credits)

– Complete the front page (general info.).

– Obtain teacher recommendation's for courses selected in Sections A, B, C, and D.

– Select the correct number of credits.

– Select 2 alternate choices.

– Sign your name to show your approval for courses selected.

– Return to Grade 9 homeroom teachers by Friday, February 24th.
