b. Joint SPIE-OSA barbeque&networking event (September 7th, 2012)

The joint SPIE-OSA barbecue and networking event was a big success with more than 80 people attending. The event allowed improving the visibility of the chapter with the student, e.g. potential new members.

c. Invited Lecture from Prof. T. Yatagai (October 16th , 2012)

On the 16th of October, the 2015 SPIE president Prof. T. Yatagai visited our chapter and gave a lecture on “Vector-wave holography: application to optical mass-storage”. After the lecture, some of the chapter members had an interesting discussion with Prof. Yatagai on the status of the chapter, discussing the challenges faced by the chapters and the action taken to address them.

d. SPIE Chapter Denmark visits SPIE chapter in Lund (November 28th, 2012)

On the 28th of November, we visited the Lund University in Sweden with a group of PhD students from DTU Fotonik. The SPIE Student Chapter of Lund University kindly invited us and organized a one-day visiting program. A short introduction to the university and student chapter was followed by visiting the Lund Laser Center: Attosecond Physics, Quantum Information, Bio Photonics, and Lund High-Power facilities. It was interesting and exciting for us to visit the Nanometer Structure Consortium at the Lund University. We also had the opportunity to attend a lecture on “Entrepreneurship and Venture Financing” by Prof. Hans Landström. In the lunch break we enjoyed the city sightseeing.

e. Fun light event (January 10th, 2013)

On January 10, 2013 the OSA and SPIE student chapters in association with DTU Fotonik and the Danish Optical Society invited all bachelor and master students to an evening event on optics and photonics for perspective. More than 60 students showed up for a fun evening with talks about the master programs at DTU Fotonik and the possibilities for working in the optics field in Denmark. The new elected President (Pernille) and Vice-President (Irnis) of SPIE Chapter gave a talk about the how is life as an MSc and PhD student and the different education curricula at DTU Fotonik. A technical talk on super continuum generation with a demonstration of a source from NKT Photonics that could literally burn CDs was given by OSA members. After the talks the department invited the students for pizzas, beer from DTU’s brewery, and Fun Light (Danish lemonade) where the students had the opportunity to ask PhD students and supervisors from the department about optics, possible projects, and general questions about the department and the life as a student.

f. Leadership Workshop in San Francisco (Photonics West 2013 – February 3rd, 2013)

Four members of the SPIE Student Chapter, Pernille Klarskov Pedersen, Alexandra Lupi, Supannee Learkthanakhachon, Viktoriia Babicheva and Sankhya Mohanty, attended the SPIE Leadership workshop during the conference Photonics west 2013 in San Francisco. During the event a lot of interesting talks were held by elder SPIE members and there was also time for some group work with other SPIE student members from all around the world.

g. Company visit: OFS ApS (June 6th, 2013)

On the 6th of June, we visited OFS Danmark in Brøndby, Denmark. During the visit, MSc and PhD students have been introduced to the company with a brief presentation from one main of the researcher working for the company, Lars Grüner-Nielsen. OFS focuses on the production of optical fiber for short- and long distance communication as well as fiber lasers and amplifiers. A significant part of their budget is invested every year in research and development with a strong focus on specialty fibers like highly nonlinear fibers and currently few mode fibers. After introducing the main products developed, the visit continued with a tour of the production center and the R&D facilities. There we had the opportunity to follow the full series of steps required for the production of optical fibers from the fabrication of the pre-form to the drawing and finally the testing.

h. SPIE Chapter Visit from Lund University (May 21st, 2013)

On 21st of May, the SPIE Student Chapters from DTU and Lund University, Sweden, had a joint meeting at DTU. The program was focused on both scientific and social activities and started with a lab tour followed by two interesting talks from a post-doc and an associate professor at DTU Fotonik and a networking event in the university student house. The joint meeting was a great success and will hopefully lead to more joint events and activities between the two chapters.

i. Fun light event (June 19th, 2013)

After the first successful Fun Light event in January, the second Fun Light event was held in the 19th of June 2013. Again, the event was organized together with the OSA student chapter and DTU Fotonik, and became another great success with more than 50 students showing up. The program started with a talk about

different companies using laser by Mette Johansen from the OSA student chapter board. Mette’s talk was inspired by her recent trip to CLEO Europe, where she had videotaped many impressive laser demonstrations at the exhibition. The second talk was given by Jeppe Seidelin Dam and Lasse Høgstedt from IRSee that is a company initiated by research at DTU Fotonik. This talk included a demonstration of their prototype product. In the same way as the first Fun Light event, the evening was finalized with pizza, beer and Fun Light lemonade sponsored by DTU Fotonik.

i. SPIE Student Chapter Leadership Workshop in San Diego (August 24th and 25th, 2013)

This year two chapter officers (Treasurer Francesco and President Pernille) had the chance to attend the SPIE Student Chapter Leadership Workshop in San Diego. The workshop provided a new toolbox for chapter management, and was also very inspiring for future chapter activities. The workshop as well as the Optics+Photonics conference provided a lot of networking opportunities that are valuable for the chapter.

4. Planning of chapter activities

• Organizing a joint barbecue with the OSA student chapter to attract new members; • Visiting lecturer Michael C. Larson already planned for September 19th 2013. • Plan of next company visit, autumn 2013, likely Ibsen Photonics; • Team building activity for chapter members only; • Visiting lecturer Michael Alley for 2014: on-going discussion.
