Pillars

• also referred to as:– posts– stanchions– columns

• give vertical support to:– girders (fore and aft members)– deck beams– decks– heavy concentrated loads• ground tackle

– anchor windlass

– line handling winches

– capstans

Pillars

• assume the load– transmit load downward toward the bottom

of the hull• where the load can be distributed over a large

area

Use of Pillars

• when placed under a deck beam or girder:– reduces the deflection of the deck beam or

girder• reduces span of beam

– relieves stress on beam brackets and transverse frames

• act as tension members

• act as compression members (add weight on deck below main deck)
