TREE PLANTING CEREMONY MARKS 100th ANNI-

VERSARY OF FORMAL EDUCATION IN

NEGARA BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

By Nadiatulhazwani binti Mohd. Khairul Nazri, AE11

PTES recently had the honour of hosting the official tree planting ceremony, organised by the Ministry of Education, to mark

the 100th year of formal education and the twenty-fourth Teachers’ Day celebrations in Brunei Darussalam.

In preparation for the event, which was held on 2nd October, 2014, a team from the Forestry Department of the Ministry of

Industry and Primary Resources, came to the college on 30th September. The students were informed that they had to dig about

twenty holes and under the guidance of Awang Mohd Zukrina bin Haji Daimun and the rest of the team, the groundwork was

carried out.

On the day of the actual ceremony, the Guest of Honour was the Deputy Minister of Education, Yang Mulia Dato Seri Setia

Haji Awang Yusoff bin Haji Awang Ismail.

The ceremony began with a recitation of the Surah Al-Fatihah and was followed by the welcoming address of Pengiran Haji Zahari bin Pengiran Haji Ahmad, the Acting Senior Special Duties Officer (Secondary Schools) at the Ministry of Education,

went on to the stage to give a speech.

In his speech, he explained that the tree

planting was a symbol of a sustainable,

healthy and happy life. In particular, he

emphasised the fact that the youth of the

country, especially the students, needed to

cooperate in order to take care of the envi-

ronment. In this way, he explained, society

can in some way ‘give back’ to the environ-

ment for the benefit of future generations.

The ceremony continued with the presenta-tion, by the Guest of Honour Yang Mulia

Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Yusoff, of sap-

lings to representatives of various primary

and secondary schools as well as sixth form

centres.

Following a group photograph session, the

PTES TEACHERS’ DAY CELEBRATIONS

Eusoff Fitri bin Sarnin, BE5

Sengkurong Six Form Centre (PTES) celebrated Teachers’ Day on Saturday, November 15th, 2014 in the Multi-Media Centre. Each year Teachers’ Day is celebrated at the school as a sign of the

students’ gratefulness and gratitude for their teachers’ diligence and

effort in helping them succeed in their studies. The celebration began with the recital of the surah Yassin and doa by

Ustaz Haji Zulkfli bin Haji Jaili, lecturer in the Islamic Studies De-

partment. “Everyone is a teacher” said Mr. Maxim Yap, Head of the PTES

Chemistry Department, in his opening speech. He went on to say that he had been teaching for 11 years and that it was the guidance that he

received from his own teachers that helped give him the desire to learn

more. Mr. Maxim developed this theme by stating that a teacher is someone

Mr. Maxim Yap: Everyone is a teacher who points his students in the right direction, but cannot force them to

follow that path. He likened this situation to when food is put out on a table. People are encouraged to eat but if they choose not

to, then that is their choice. He then spoke of his own experience – of how his teachers inspired him to study hard and to know more than them.

The celebration continued with a Tausyeh performance from the members of the Badan Keagamaan dan Kerohanian. Two student council members then presented a short video about a teacher who tries to interest his students by using slightly uncon-

ventional methods. Members of the audience were then invited to give their comments. A performance by students taking A Level Malay followed. The students were accompanied by the PTES Choir and Music

Club.

Then it was the turn of some of our A Level Literature students to recite a poem. After a performance by members of the PTES Student Council and PRR, the celebrations ended with a slide show of photo-

graphs of our teachers taken during the many activities that they have been involved in this year.

اسلام عليكم ورحمة الله

Hi!

In case you don’t know, my name is Zainul Asyraf of BE8 and I was recently elected as the president of the Student Council. I

must admit that the news came as a bit of a shock, as I was not expecting it!

After being a member of the Student Council for

three years at SOAS College, I Initially decided that

I did not want to be a member of the PTES Student

Council. However, after thinking things over, I

thought of all the advantages of being a member of

the Student Council or, even, the Peer Support

Group. I realised how much more I could develop as

an individual – that this was a chance to improve on

what I was already good and to adapt to a new envi-

ronment with different and more flexible working

options.

Before becoming president, I was nominated for the

Student Council by my group tutor. Following that,

I had to undergo an interview to see whether I was a

suitable choice or not. Then, in order to become a

member of the Main Committee, I was interviewed

by the Administration Team – including the Princi-

pal herself – which, quite honestly, was very tough

indeed!

I understand that it is not easy to be a contributing

Zainul Asyraf: brings previous experience to his position as President and supportive member of the Student Council.

With the added responsibility on our shoulders, this year has been very challenging for myself and most of the other members.

We, however, do not find these duties or responsibilities burdens. Instead, we consider them challenges – challenges that are

inevitable and exciting - as well as opportunities to develop the key aspects of character building, self-esteem and confidence.

We have to train ourselves, and that is why I believe that we have to instill in ourselves great leadership values and resilience in

order to succeed in our studies while, at the same time, making sure that we do not stray away from our duties and responsibili-

ties. We have to prepare ourselves to become elite students and potential leaders.

I believe that being on the Student Council is the best platform for us, or anyone else for that matter, to help us hone our skills

and to inculcate positive thinking. Above all, we aim to work hand in hand to bring about better communication with everyone

as it is only by cooperating and working as a cohesive unit that we can achieve the achievable.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation towards the Administration team for choosing me as the new president. In the

short time I have been in the post, I have gained a better understanding of my teachers and my fellow students which has

served to strengthen the ties between us.

Sincerely,

Zainul Asyraf

Congratulations to Pusat Tingkatan Enam Sengkurong’s (PTES) debate team for winning the 18 th Inter-School Debate Competition. The finals took place on 11th September 2014 at Maktab Sains, and it so hap-

pens that PTES were also up against the hosts.

After a great display in arguing the motion, ‘This house believes that science is a threat to humanity’, Je-

rome Liow Shen Voon, Zahra Nashath, Macalister Mak Geng Buo, Christopher Ijok and Mohd. Nasri bin

Hjaji Mohd. Tahir came out as the victors for PTES.

“It was a nerve-racking experience. We had some ups and downs on the way but we managed to over-

come these hiccups,” said one of the debaters.

PTES Debate team worthy winners

All of them were grateful for the support of their coaches, Cikgu Dk. Zarina Jade binti Pg. Sabri and

Cikgu Ida Iryani binti Pg. Hj. Abu Bakar. They would also like to thank their senior captains, May Cho

Xin Yin (AE13) and Muhammad Danyal bin Johan Thani (AE20) as well as the school for believing in

them.

These talented speakers not only made their school proud, but they also made a name for the school.

PTES only opened at the beginning of this year and the recognition the achieved as a result of winning

this competition is an incredible feat for such a newly established school.

The Debate Club and the school as a whole are looking forward to receiving the next batch of young de-

baters who, it is hoped, will continue the winning tradition.

In the knowledge that the Brunei government is committed to developing local businesses, some members of the PTES Young

Social Entrepreneurship Club were encouraged to dip their toes into the business world by taking part in the Ramadhan Bazaar

which was held from 19th July 2014 – 21st July 2014 at the Hassanal Bolkiah, Stadium Berakas.

The Ramadhan Bazaar was organised

by Live Wire and Cikgu Dk Sa-

brinawati binti Pg. Damit made her

booth available to any members of

the PTES YSEC who wished to make

use of it.

More than 100 booths were set up in the area around the Stadium with all

sorts of food and beverages for sale.

Our booth (AB 08) was located at the

back of the Anggerik Desa swimming

pool. Under the very able guidance of

Cikgu Halinah binti Apong, Cikgu

Fatimah binti Hj Tuah and Cikgu

Hjh. Aneesah binti Hj Abd Hamid,

the students offered a large selection

of local and international cuisine such

as nasi ayam penyet, tumpi with ayam kari, bubur si bujang, chocolate

balls, chicken cheese balls, lasagna,

snacks and pop ice to name but a few.

Members of the YSEC manning their stall

Throughout the Ramadhan Bazaar, we changed the menu from day to day just to keep the customers coming back to try some-

thing different. All the food that we sold was prepared and cooked by ourselves. Asking the students who took part in the ba-

zaar to prepare their own food was designed to make them more self-reliant.

Time management was a very important factor as there was only a short amount of time for the preparation of the food since

we had to be there at 2.30 p.m.

This activity really opened our eyes to a whole new world. From observing other vendors, we learned a lot about the ways in

which people try to sell their products as everyone has their own ideas about how to attract customers.

The Ramadhan Bazaar certainly helped us to improve our direct selling skills as shown by the fact that we succeeded in attract-

ing a lot of customers through skilful promotion of our products, and managed to make a profit for both the club and ourselves.

Overall, we made more of a profit than we expected!

Being given the opportunity of taking part in the bazaar was a once in a lifetime experience. Although it was tiring, we had a

lot of fun during the process. It was one more great moment in the club’s history and one which we will all have fond memo-

ries of. We learnt so much as a result and it is hoped, Insha’Allah, that we will be able to apply the knowledge that we gained

by taking part in a different type of bazaar soon.

YOUNG SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS DO A ROARING

11

Muhammad Haris Arifin bin Abdullah, BE16

On Sunday 9th November 2014, I went on a trip with four of my friends to Ulu-Ulu Belait. The trip, which was really meant for

visitors from other countries, was organised by a group of students from UBD known as 1StopBrunei. 1StopBrunei is a non-profit making organisation, or NGO, which has close ties with the travel and tourism industry in Brunei.

Although the excursion was really meant for visitors from other countries, my friends and I went on the trip to obtain ideas

about how to organise tourist excursions as part of our Travel and Tourism A Level course.

There were about twenty real tourists on this excursion and, by joining them, we were able to see how the trip was organised

from the tourists’ perspective.

We departed from UBD at 9.50 a.m. and headed to the Belait District where we visited four places of interest. Our four desti-

nations were as follows:

1) Luangan Lalak Recreational Park

(11:25 a.m. – 12:45 p.m.)

When we arrived there at 11:25 a.m. the

tour guide, Shavez, told us that we could

do anything we wanted, including swim-

ming. However, as he said that he would

not be responsible for anything that hap-

pened to any of us, many of us avoided

swimming and just enjoyed walking

across the bridges and looking at the beau-

tiful scenery. The trees in this park are

protected, so it is illegal to chop them

down. We took pictures and made video

recordings to be used for marketing pur-

poses when we do our coursework next

year.

Setting off into the jungle along a stream

We also had lunch there after an hour of being allowed to roam freely around the park. The food provided was nasi biryani.

For us locals, eating this was just normal but, for the tourists, this was something new. They really loved it and even their chil-

dren wanted second helpings! Apples were also provided as well as bottled water.

We left the park at 12:45 p.m. to go to the next place on our itinerary.

2) Iban Graveyard (1:20 p.m. – 1:35 p.m.)

Despite the fact that the tourists didn’t like the mosquitoes attacking them, this was an interesting place!

The purpose of this visit was to learn about the traditional beliefs of the Ibans. On each of the graves were placed some offer-

ings to indicate what each person used to like before they passed away. Some of the graves had radios, bicycles and even plates

on them. This is considered a sign of respect in Iban culture.

3) Wang Kadir Park (1:35 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.)

We were supposed to go jungle trekking in the park but, due to arriving behind schedule, we didn’t have time. Nevertheless,

we enjoyed the scenery here. There was no rubbish scattered around and the stream was beautiful to look at. The water was

cold and most of us took off our shoes and sandals and soaked our feet.

I also did some rock climbing. This was very difficult as the last time I did this activity was when I went to Wang Kadir Park

as a young child! In addition, the rocks were slippery and as I wasn’t wearing the right footwear, this made trying to climb

them dangerous.

TRAVEL AND TOURISM STUDENTS COMBINE WORK WITH PLEASURE

12

4) Iban Longhouse (2:25 p.m. – 4:35 p.m.)

Our final destination was an Iban longhouse. The people there were very happy and made us feel very welcome. They greeted

us with their generous hospitality when we arrived.

The longhouse was made of wood and we discovered seven families living there. We met and socialised with the Iban house-

hold in the communal area outside their seven individual living areas or rooms.

Shavez had brought some dead chickens for the Ibans to cook. He is well known by the Iban people and they were happy to

cook the chicken in bamboo for us. The bamboo chicken was delicious, but if only they had cooked some rice with it, I would

have said that it was the best food I had ever tasted!

While we were waiting for the food to be cooked, the Iban families showed us some of their handicraft such as baskets and

animal figures that they had made out of bamboo. They explained that these objects were sold to tourists as souvenirs.

4One of our hosts also demonstrated how to use a blowpipe which their ancestors used to use for hunting wild animals. A

blowpipe is very long and you have to blow as hard as you can to make sure the dart penetrates an animal’s skin. We all knew

what a blowpipe was, but none of us had seen one in real life. The demonstration was therefore very interesting as it gave us an

idea of what hunting was like in the past.

Before we waved goodbye and boarded the bus to take us home, we took part in a group photo session with all the Iban fami-

lies. They were sad to see us go and hope that more trips like this will be organised as they rarely receive visitors.

As for myself and my four friends, we were very happy with the tour organised by 1StopBrunei and I would like to thank

Shavez for giving us the opportunity to learn something about organiing tours. We hope to be able to apply this knowledge to a

tour that we are organising next year.

TRAVEL & TOURISM TALK Cikgu Ramarao Simadari Naidu

A former colleague of our college, Mr. Stuart Graeme Alpe, gave a talk to a group of interested lecturers on 15th August, 2014.

During his talk, he touched on how tourism can be an enriching exercise as well as a tool

for staff development. Staff development, he explained, would encompass team-building,

problem-solving and comparative school-based activities.

He focused mainly on tourism in New Zealand by listing the array of popular tourist desti-

nations that people can choose to visit, some peculiar and well-kept secret locations, ad-

venture and sightseeing activities as well as the ever-popular shopping expeditions.

As a local resident of Christchurch and one who is a keen traveller, he has a wealth of

experience in organising tours that can be personalised for individuals, small groups as

well as larger groups of all ages.

He also touched on the question of the cost versus the benefit of particular tourist destina-

tions and activities – some being expensive but worthwhile, with others being cheap but

meaningful as well. The biggest expense being the air fare from Brunei to New Zealand

which is around BND $1,500. Some expenses could be minimised while others are Mr.

Stuart Alpe: informative talk beyond our control.

He explained that when we deal with package tours, for every ten tour members, he could

work out one free place. This could be taken as an organiser’s benefit or the benefit could

be shared out among the 11 tour group members.
