    NOTES

    l. Besides his baptismal record in Ottenbach, Zurich, there are dozens of references to Hans Weidler in the Reformed Church Books of Kirchardt With only one exception his name is given simply as Hans Weidler. In an entry of 18 May 1705 in the Kirchardt Church Book at a baptism in which his son Hans Jacob Weidler acted as sponsor, Hans [Sr] is referred to as Hans Georg Weidler. There can be no mistake about this being Hans, the father of Michaei because of the accompanying description. He is noted as being the father of Hans Jacob Weidler, and as being Anwald~ a position which Michael's father held at that time. The conclusions are either that Hans bore the additional name of Georg or that in this instance the pastor made an error.

    2. Anwaldt is difficult to translate. The lll1waldt was the agent or representative in the local community assigned to look after the interests of the overlord or in some instances a group of landlords. For a description of the social and political structure of a German village similar to Kirchardt at the time Michael's parents lived there, see: Annette K Burgert, Eighteenth Centtny Emigrlll1ts from Gennlll1-SpeakiJJg Lwds to North America, vol 1: The Northem Kraichgau IBreinigsville, PA Pennsylvania German Society, 1983}, pp. 13-17.

    3. Hans Weidler's second wife, Dorothea ( ? l Kappler, was the widowed mother of Hans' son-in-law, Martin Kappler. Martin Kappler was the husband of Susanna Weidler, the fifth child on the previous page.

    4. Hans Jacob Wohlgemuth, father of Anna Barbara, was a Mennonite. In 1679, after the deaths of Hans Jacob and his wife Margretha, the Wohlgemuth children, one son and three daughters, were baptized in the Reformed Church of Kirchardt

    NOTES

    l. No baptismal record for Rudolph Weidler was found, although Heinz Schuchmann in Schweizer Eiowa.nderer im kurpfalzischeo Streubesitz des Kraichgaues 1650-1750 states that Rudolph was the son of Jacob Weidler. The sponsor at the birth of Hans (child #3 on the previous page) was Hans Rudi Gutt, so the child's name may well have been Rudolph. According to the Kirchardt church book, Rudolph Weidler is spoken of as being deceased in the account of his son Heinrich's confirmation, 6 September 1699.
