It expresses a complete thought.

It has one subject and one verb.

Simple SentencesExamples:Carols sweater is red.You and Alex need to be quiet.Ms. Goldstein did a cartwheel.

Compound SentencesA compound sentence is a sentence with 2 or more independent clauses joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction.

It will have 2 simple subjects and 2 simple predicates.Compound SentencesExamples:

Ren planned to go to the hockey game, but he couldnt get tickets.

Andrew loves monkeys, but he also likes lemurs.

Coordinating ConjunctionsCoordinating Conjunctions are used to join together 2 independent clauses.

Complex SentencesA complex sentence is one independent clause plus one dependent clause.

Each clause has its own subject and verb, but the dependent clause cant stand alone.

The two clauses are joined by a subordinating conjunction.

Complex SentencesExamples:When Trey was little, he did very weird things.

Alex stands at the bottom of the cliff while the climber moves up the rock.

Compound-Complex SentencesA compound-complex sentence has at least 2 independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.
