OUR FAVORITE PICKS We thought you might be interested in what we are listening to here at Smokey's, so we asked each

employee to list their favorite album of the moment. Here are their responses:

MYRA Neil Young: Harvest Moon

Reprise 45057 Neil Young's new album harkens back to

his work of old, like After the Gold Rush, Harvest and Comes a Time. Actually, it's even more mellow than most, complete with Neil's good old musical stock in trade: straight harp, lazy rhythms and that sleepy southern California sound reminiscent of most of his earlier work. Once again showing his political folk roots, this album shows that his dedication to political involvement hasn't waned since 1969 and that his song writing is still pertinent today.

USA Alice in Chains: Dirt

CBS 52475 The city of Seattle has become a mecca

for alternative rock bands such as Soundgarden, Mudhoney and Alice in Chains. The back to basic metal sounds of Alice in Chains' newest album, Dirt, will please any of those liking grungy, guitarheavy music. The band shows inspiration from such rock greats as Metallica and Motorhead. Two favorite tunes, "Them Bones," and "Would" are fine examples of the band's talent.

JOES. Television

Capitol 98396 The legendary band Television returns

after a hiatus of nearly 15 years with Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd once again trading gorgeous guitar leads over a solid rhythm section.

Verlaine's lyrics are as elliptic as ever and his "been there done that" vocals sound like an Arlo Guthrie for the 90s. This is the band that inspired a · generation of alternative rockers. It's great to welcome them back.

WAYNE Bing Crosby: 16 Most Requested Songs

CBS 48974 This great collection of some of Bing

Crosby's earliest solo work was recorded after he left Paul Whiteman's band at the beginning of the 1930s. For those of us who are only familiar with the more bland and safe recordings of the 1940s and 1950s, this is an exposure to a much younger Crosby with a dynamic vocalization communicating passion and excitement. Crosby, in his rendition of "Brother Can You Spare a Dime," captures the heart and emotion of the depression better than any contemporary version of this classic. Other

gems include his playful duet with the Mills Brothers on "Dinah" and one of the greatest jazz recordings of all time on "Sweet Georgia Brown."

SMOKEY Lo Mejor De Jose Alfredo Jiminez

33 Grandes Exitos RCA Int'l 2254

In keeping with my current infatuation with discovering the wonderful musical traditions of our southern neighbor, Mexico, my favorite album at the current time is a wonderful double tape or double CD, Lo Mejor De (lhe Best of) Jose Alfredo Jiminez.

Although not considered to be among the 1st rank of Mexican cancionistas, Jose Alfredo Jiminez presents here, with 33 powerful songs, ample reason to reconsider. Accompanied by perhaps the premier mariachi band of all time, the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, Jiminez delivers powerful, sustained, passionate singing. One would be hard pressed to come up with a better, more cohesive collection of classic Mexican Ranchera singing. For this reason, I vote four stars, especially if you're trying to learn Spanish, like me.

As of this date, all the major labels, plus all the main independent labels have agreed to stop shipping compact discs m the standard 6" x 12" long box. Same goes for the clear plastic equivalent. GEORGE Joseph Spence

Complete Folkways Recordings 1958 Smithsonian 40066

With his comical singing and unique guitar playing, this classic set by Joseph Spence uses popular melodies as the basis for extended rhythmic and melodic variations. He also often uses his voice as an accompaniment for his guitar playing rather than the other way around. Starting out as an unknown Bahaman folk guitarist, he has since become considered a guitar player's player and his W'ork is admired by such notable musicians as Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal. In fact, one popular rumor has it that Blind Blake was not killed by a streetcar in Harlem but rather went to the Bahamas to spend time playing with Joseph Spence.

SARAH Siouxsie and the Banshees

Twice Upon a Timeflbe Singles Geffen 24492

This compilation provides a satisfying overview of one of alternative rock's longest lived and most preeminent bands. From the punkish "Fireworks" · to th~

almost orchestral sounding "Face to Face" off the Batman Returns soundtrack, Twice Upon a Time not only shows the musical evolution of Siouxsie and her colleagues but the diversity of their music as well. The album also includes their best known single, "Peek-A-Boo."

JOEC. Hank Garland

Jazz Winds From A New Direction Sony 8372

With great guitar playing all around, Jazz Winds From a New Direction proved to be Hank Garland's only jazz album. One year after this album was recorded, he was involved in an automobile accident that ended his playing career. The band features Joe Merell of Dave Brubeck fame on drums and a 19 year old Gary Burton.
