What is AdBlue and why is it needed

AdBlue is a high-purity aqueous Urea solution containinga 32.5% solution of Urea in water. The quality of AdBlue is important and is defined in a DIN standard, DIN 70070

New legislation regarding exhaust emission limits have been set by the European Union. These new emission limits come into force in 2005 (EURO 4) and in 2008 (EURO 5). The limits are set out in several European Union Directives, including 88/77/EEC, 1999/96/EC and 2001/27/EC.

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and AdBlue has been selected by the European Vehicle Manufactures as the solution to reduce the emissions from Diesel engines.

SCR systems will be used on diesel powered heavy-duty vehicles over 3.5 tons to reduce the nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx). AdBlue usage amounts to approximately 3-4% of the fuel consumption on EURO 4 vehicles. A typical heavy-duty vehicle will consume approximately 3 tons of AdBlue each year.

3

How does SCR technology work

SCR is an after-treatment system which deals with emissions in the exhaust system. AdBlue is mixed with air and injected directly into a catalytic converter inside the exhaust system. A chemical reaction takes place which converts the NOx present in the exhaust into a harmless gas and water.

Projected Requirement for AdBlue in Europe

The requirement for AdBlue will increase steadily over the coming years. It is estimated that by 2010 the yearly demand for AdBlue will exceed 4 million tons per year and around 20,000 filling locations will exist in Europe.

Careful Handling is Required

Although AdBlue is considered non-hazardousit presents several challenges when it comes to storing and handling the chemical on a daily basis. AdBlue has the following specific properties

These properties require that AdBlue is handled with care. Any equipment that comes in contact with AdBlue must be made of suitable materials to prevent corrosion and contamination.

Dispensing systems must minimise contact with air to prevent crystallisation, provide protection from cold weather and prevent spillage. Conventional dispensing equipment is not suitable for handling AdBlue.

It quickly crystallises when exposed to air

It freezes at -11oC

It has a corrosive effect on some common metals

It should be protected for contamination

It should not be released freely into the environment

6

AdBlue Requires a Sealed Connection

It prevents the risk of spillagereducing the risk of crystallisation and corrosion on the vehicle and at the filling point

It ensures only AdBlue can be filled in the vehicles AdBlue tank preventing the risk of incorrect filling which could permanently damage the vehicles SCR equipment or create a hazard

It protects the quality of AdBluepreventing the risk of contamination, ensuring the vehicle reaches the emission standards it was designed to achieve.

To ensure AdBlue can be handled in a reliable and safe way, IDENTIC has developed a sealed dispensing system for refilling AdBlue on vehicles. This spill-free vehicle refilling system provides the following advantages

7

Spill-free Vehicle Refilling (SVR) for AdBlue

8

AdBlue SVR Nozzle and Tank Inlet Adaptor

Key Benefits Only AdBlue can be filled in AdBlue tank No spillage No crystallisation Protects SCR-system from contamination Automatically filling to correct level

IDENTIC has designed a spill-free nozzle specifically for use with AdBlue. The SVR Nozzle provides a sealed connection between the dispenser and the vehicles AdBlue tank.

9

AdBlue SVR Tank Inlet Adaptor

Can be installed by the vehicle manufacturer or tank supplier

May be retrofitted by the vehicle operator

Adaptable for all types of vehicle tanks

Allows the tank inlet to be positioned at all angles

Built-in pressure and expansion control

Key Benefits

A tank inlet adaptor is fitted inside the neck of the vehicles AdBlue tank. This allows the SVR Nozzle to be connected and ensures only AdBlue can be filled in the tank.

10

Designs for Tank Inlet Adaptors

A range of tank inlet adaptors are being produced to suit different AdBlue tank designs
