Timothy was referred to as Paul’s “beloved and faithful son in the Lord” (I Corinthians 4:17) and implies that Timothy was personally won by Paul. Timothy was Paul’s chief associate and had been imprisoned with Paul many times.  “Unto Timothy, my own son in the Faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.” (v. 2)

Doctrine in the New Testament: “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” I Corinthians 15:1-4 (KJV)

“Desiring to be teacher of the law; understanding neither what they say, not whereof they affirm.” (v. 7)

Issue: Jewish Christians wanting to become experts in the Law. Without a biblical foundation, these “teachers” would make assertions that were false.
