Dual Deployment Electronics: MAWD Perfect Flight, HCX G-

Wiz Partners The electronics will “back” one another up

incase one pyro (either drogue or main) does not fire.

Drogue Parachute will be deployed at apogee

Main Parachute will be deployed at 900ft The electronics have been tested four tests

have been done:• Christmas tree light test • Vacuum Chamber test• First flight in the scale rocket (MAWD Only)• Second Flight in scale model (MAWD Only)

computer - measures acceleration of the rocket

Toshiba hard drive – test subject; we will run a Linux script on the hard drive over and over again; the time the hard drive takes to run the script each time is measured

Simple net computer/Linux computer – the mini computer that will execute the Linux script on the hard drive; it will be initialized by a PC; the flight data will be recorded on a flash drive inserted into this computer

Power converter – Keeps a steady flow of power to the payload components

Transmitter in Vehicle

• Big Red Bee Beeline GPS• RF: 17mW on 433.920 MHz• Battery and life: 750mAh 10 Hrs• Size: 1.25” x 3” 2 ounces

Ground Station

• Receiver: Yaesu VX-6R• TNC: Byonics Tiny Track 4• GPS: Garmin eTrex Vista

Beeline receives GPS position• Encodes as AX.25 packet data• Sends as 1200 baud audio on 433.92 MHz

VX-6R receives at 433.92 MHz and extracts audio TinyTrack 4 converts audio to digital NMEA location data Garmin displays the digital location data on human screen

Fault Most probable cause How we are going to fix it

Instability when reaching apogee Team rushed to get in one more flight and did not notice fillets on fins over the tailcone had cracked (West Systems Epoxy was used everywhere except fillets which were hobby shop epoxy)

Ultilize time more wisely, and not look over look any ‘small’ detail – use fiberglass tape on fins especially over gel coat on tailcone and never use hobby shop epoxy anywhere – even just fillets

Drag/impulse Separation Did not use shear pins on main per advice of an on-site “mentor” at the launch (“rocket is so small you don’t need them”)

Follow the design and don’t let others misguide you

Scale Flight Analysis

19

Student Launch Initiative

AIAA OC Section

• First flight to 1938 ft was very acceptable and proved design was stable• Second flight to 1749 ft began well, but:

• Showed a problem with wobble as it approached apogee• Deployed both drogue and main together

Testing

All the testing we have done is to help insure that our rocket is safe

20

Testing that has been done includes:Black PowderBattery LifeGPS RangeScale Model Launch

Testing – Black Powder

The table below shows the testing our team has done with black powder charges. How we did the testing was by assembling the rocket as we normally would but through the pressure hole we put a wire to a battery to fire charges

Testing – GPS Range

Our team first let the electronics connect to satellites, once it had done that then we started to walk away from the transmitter (Big Red Bee Beeline) and saw how far it would transmit while being in the rocket.
