Spotlight on Integration (8.4)
Agency Support Integrated Information Initiative (I-3) Effort EIMS is the Agency Level-II metadata
repository (OEI/ORD MOU) Integrated Platform for Development
ORD’s Integrated Geospatial Server Supporting National Standards
Implications of EIMS as NSDI node

Integration Objectives
Manage, share and use the EPA’s inventory of heterogeneous data sources
Capture, store and analyze real-world coordinates for representing metadata
Integrate metadata with geospatial data Support advanced and integrated web
functionality for GIS, Modeling and Scientific Data Visualization
NSDI Clearinghouse -FGDC compliant

Expected Outcomes Increased EIMS content in a single ORD (Agency)
inventory Integration of metadata with datasets, databases and tools
in support of integrated analytical applications Data integration (DFW) and generic analytical tools
available on the web Reduces duplication of effort by sharing the Agency’s
investments in data and analytical tools Establish and maintain Agency is NSDI/FGDC-compliant
(EO12904) and publish to a National Network

I-3 Place Ambient Components Integrated Information Initiative:
EPA Region 3 Pilot (Deadline October 2000)
The I-3 work plan Geospatial Data library Index (ORD) Internet geoservices:Integrated data server and
expanding EnviroMapper (ORD) Geospatial data acquisition Locational data improvement/cleanup Spatially enable STORET Spatially enable AQS

Integrated EIMS and I-3 Effort ORD section of the I-3 work plan includes:
Establish the server environment to support development of new technologies
Server Charter and configuration Extend EIMS - add a geospatial schema to EIMS that
supports linkages between metadata and geospatial data EIMS > EnviroMapper Integration Geospatial Resource inventory

Integrated Geospatial Server Description: (Server needs a name)
SUN E4500 quad-processors, 4GB memory, 360 GB disk space. Location:
RTP NCC development environment operated by NTSD thru WCF program Users:
Agency spatial application developers Availability:
currently being configured to support EIMS and I-3 pilot. (Oracle 8i Spatial and ESRI Spatial Data Engine SDEs)
developer access starting mid-July 2000 Intended Use:
development platform for web-enabled analytical tools GIS Modeling Visualization

Spatially Enabling EIMS
Extend EIMS database to support geospatial data georeference addresses (points) and footprints
(boundaries/areas) which represent metadata records Interactive web-enabled map interface for EIMS
EnviroMapper embedded interface in advanced search form
EnviroMapper embedded interface in display of search results
EnviroMapper in the create/edit metadata records to create metadata footprints
Eliminate need for static cross-reference tables.

EIMS as NSDI Node First EPA node to Publish to the National Spatial Data
Infrastructure (tested February 2000/ production July 2000)
NSDI/FGDC-compliant EIMS is FGDC compliant (see document, Meta Manager FGDC EIMS Data
Model Mappings, February 2000) Make EPA FGDC-Compliant and provides a mechanism for
publication to the NSDI Increases interest and participation from EPA Regional
offices (Regions 2,5,8,9,10 recently added) Working with OEI to establish business rules and
policy for geospatial metadata and tools in EIMS
