Why are we studying about the college application process?

2. In a time of economic recession, the job market has become ultracompetitive.

3. To hire a personal college counselor can cost $5000+

4. Applying for college is a game – you can be successful if you know how to play to win!!!

I. Formative Assignments: Your College Dossier

College Dossier: What is it?For the next three weeks,

you will be required to complete a dossier, or portfolio, of the many elements in the college application process.

The idea here is, the process is entire driven by you.

You will be turning in your dossier as a 300 point formative assignment due on Friday June 8th.

College Prep Requirements1. Academic Resume: A list

of your academic accomplishments during your high school career.

2. Culminating Project: The purpose of the Culminating Project is to prepare for life after graduating high school. The expectation is, by the end of this unit you should have completed and submitted all of the requirements through 11th grade.

College Application Requirements1. The Common App: A universal college

application that is accepted by most colleges/universities.

2. Letter of Recommendation: A letter from an adult who can validate your good character (cannot be a family member or KR staff member!!).

3. College Comparison WKSHT: Create a spreadsheet of 5 college you are interested in applying to and compare/contrast categories such as location, tuition, student life, etc.

4. SAT/ACT: Validation that you have taken or have registered one of the two most popular college entrance exams.

5. Admissions Statement: A persuasive essay responding to one of the prompts on the Common App. Admissions officers consider this the #1 variable for admitting students to their college/university!!

Financial Requirements1. Scholarships and Research

Grants: research different scholarships and/or research grants and create a spreadsheet and analyze which ones best apply to you.

2. Applying to Scholarships: Apply to three scholarships and please include your application materials in your dossier.

3. Scholarship Scams: Research 10 ways you bogus scholarship foundations prey upon on financially desperate college students.

II. Summative Assignments: The Oral Presentation
