THE UK PLASTICS PACT PROGRESS REPORT

Tracking UK Plastics Pact member progress and future commitments towards the four Pact targets

VERSION 3: December 2019

2

WRAP launched The UK Plastics Pact on the 26th April 2018. Since its inception the Pact now has 85 business members (including Retailers, Manufacturers, the Hospitality Sector, Recyclers and Plastic Convertors) plus 45 supporting organisations (trade bodies, NGO’s etc). Click here to see a list of all our members and supporters. Each has agreed to targets to 2025 with a roadmap in place which sets out the direction of travel for members to follow.

The progress tracker and future commitments In May 2019, to mark the one year anniversary of The UK Plastics Pact, a selection of our members from the manufacturing and retail sector (who make or sell products in plastic packaging) have come together to share the actions that they have taken so far and the commitments that they are making to deliver against the targets of The UK Plastics Pact. This document how now been updated with more recent progress from these businesses and now also includes pledges from other sectors- including the recycling sector & the plastic manufacturers.

INTRODUCTION Important to note This report represents a small selection of the large number of initiatives currently underway in this sector. Due to their sensitive nature, there are many other initiatives ongoing which will be shared in due course. In some instances columns in the tables will be blank. This signifies that the organisation is either not taking action towards the target at this moment in time, the information is not yet ready to share publicly or that that the organisation does not work in a way that requires action towards that particular target. This document will be updated regularly over the coming years as we progress towards 2025. A glossary of terms is available in the back of this report. Here.

Target 1 Eliminate problematic or unnecessary

single-use packaging through redesign, innovation or alternative (reuse)

delivery model.

Target 2 100% of plastics packaging to be reusable,

recyclable or compostable.

Target 3 70% of plastics packaging effectively

recycled or composted.

Target 4 30% average recycled content across all

plastic packaging.

Actions taken

To date we have launched

a new form of packaging

for steaks with three of

our customers.

Circa 80% less plastic.

Saving 300 tons of single

use plastic.

Eliminating 10 million

plastic trays.

We are also in the process

of eliminating PVC from

our packaging and

replacing this with a

widely recycled

alternative.

Conducted a group wide study

of our plastic usage both to

retail and business to business,

to provide us with a detailed

benchmark for future work.

All our packaging

conforms with our

customer and legal

requirements regarding

on pack recycling

information for

consumers.

Our new pack has

instructions for the

consumers to remove

plastic elements from the

card and tell them which

recycling bin these should

be added to.

All our PET plastic

packaging is made with

100% recycled bottle flake.

Planned Actions We will eliminate

unnecessary plastic in our

packaging without

compromising shelf life or

quality.

Actions taken Boots has become the first national

pharmacy, health and beauty

retailer in the UK to move to

unbleached (brown) paper carrier

bags as standard. The paper bags

are replacing plastic bags in all

2,485 and will remove over 9001

tonnes of plastic from Boots store

operations each year.

Boots has removed 149 tonnes of

plastic from their own-brand gift

ranges this year.

Boots has reduced plastic

packaging used in deliveries by

76% as of 4th November by

removing bubble wrap, plastic

parcel tape and delivery bags,

saving 136 tonnes of plastic every

year².

Our sushi trays have

switched from blue to

clear PET, greater

recyclability and more

valuable as recycled

material.

All black plastic

removed from Boots

brand food packaging.

From this month,

Boots customers will

start to receive their

medicines in 100%

compostable pharmacy

bags, which are made

using potato starch

and can be used as a

bin liner for food

waste. By March 2020,

more than 10 million

prescription bags each

year will be made using

compostable material

rather than traditional

plastic.

At the beginning of 2019 Boots

worked with WRAP to evaluate

enhanced consumer recycling

messages on bathroom toiletries.

This involved our Product

Evaluation team trialling labelled

products with 3000 members of

the public. The results of the trial

are now being assessed by WRAP.

In January 2019 Boots Opticians

partnered with Johnson and

Johnson, in collaboration with

TerraCycle, to offer the UK’s first

in store contact lens recycling

scheme. Consumers will now be

able to bring along their used

contact lenses and/or packaging

to any Boots Opticians practice

across the UK and place into the

recycling bins. This will

significantly reduce plastic in

landfill and from entering our

oceans.

Our fruit pots are

made of a minimum

of 50% recycled

material.

In Botanics, we have

moved from using

100% virgin plastics in

tubes, to include 25%

recycled content. This

step closes the loop,

ensuring we are also

putting recycled

material to good use.

We are also using 25%

in our range of bottle.

Boots pharmacy

automated

our last remaining

black plastic bottle

type (<0.2% of our

primary plastic

packaging in GB) to a

recyclable, non-black

format.

We have used the unique reach of our

brands to promote recycling with

consumers. “Recycle me” messaging has

featured on our Pepsi, Robinsons and

7UP TV campaigns this year.

We continue to feature OPRL on all our

packaging.

We have started to roll out screw cap

messaging (“please recycle me”) on

Pepsi, Tango and Ballygowan brands.

We continue to buy only UK-based

Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs).

We have supported on-site

deposit/reward schemes with some our

major customers including COOP at Live

Nation festival and Twickenham

stadium.

We continue to be enthusiastic

supporters of a well-designed GB wide

DRS scheme and work closely with our

stakeholders in the British Soft Drinks

Association to drive for the best design

possible. We are doing so publically and

earlier this year were sponsors of an

industry “round table” event on DRS.

Planned actions Highland Spring Group will decrease PET in packaging by 20% by 2020.

All Highland Spring brand packaging is100% recyclable. 100% of Highland Spring brand packaging is labelled in accordance with OPRL guidelines.

We will continue to look at additional ways through our packaging and labelling to help consumers recycle more. We will continue to support recycling-on-the-go campaigns in key UK cities in partnership with Hubbub. We will look at ways to use the KSB bins for additional litter interventions in Scotland. We will increase our consumer communications through all social media channels on responsible recycling. We will continue to actively engage with industry, governments and stakeholders to design a UK-wide Deposit Return Scheme.

All Highland Spring bottles will contain at least 50% re-cycled materials by the end of 2022. We will expand the range of Highland Spring eco bottle™ sizes further. We will continue to collaborate with stakeholders to increase the availability of rPET.

Actions taken Where the product allows polybags have been replaced with tissue paper. Otherwise a recyclable polybag is being used. Timescales for moving Lakeland ‘Ultimate’ foil and film packaging to a cardboard box estimated to be complete by Q4 2020.

We have invested in a new data reporting system to enable us improved visibility of our plastic packaging usage. We have detailed action plans in place by category focusing on our top priorities with the largest tonnage. These were put in place from Q2 2019, are ongoing and assessed quarterly for progress. We have assessed our black plastic packaging; black end caps on 3 oven liner products changed to clear Q2 2019, black hangers on our 18 mat products will be replaced by Q4 2019. Ongoing supplier dialogue regarding our sustainable packaging requirements. We have carried out an in-depth feasibility study on a refillable type format for cleaning liquids.

Feasibility studies on providing collection/infrastructure at stores are not viable at this stage. We continue to use social media, emails and our web page to encourage this behavior as much as possible. We regularly feature ECO-products in our store layouts and on-line marketing. Took part in Recycle Week 2019. In our recent OPRL audit of our Lakeland branded packaging we obtained a score of 88% . This means 88% is recyclable. A consumer engagement campaign in the form of an educational leaflet on recycling is available in store and on our blog accessible via our web page.

Working with Valpak, we will be collecting recycled content data from Nov 2019 with our first visibility of this data from May 2020. This will provide us with the baseline on which to build our plans. By end Q4 2019, 8 cleaning products will be in 100% recycled content bottles. This is the start of a larger selection being implemented in 2020.

We have removed single use cups from our store, manufacturing and office canteens and replaced them with reusable ones. This will save over 13.6m single use cups per year, representing 61.5T of polystyrene. We no longer sell multipacks of plastic straws or cotton buds. We have removed all expanded polystyrene from food packaging. In 2019 we launched a sustainably produced paper bag for life giving our customers the opportunity to replace plastic bags with paper bags. This will remove an estimated 45m plastic bags and save 1,300T of plastic per year. We have removed almost 80 million small plastic produce stickers on single fruit either just removed or replaced with a paper sticker.

We have removed all Expanded polystyrene from our food and drink packaging. Which is over 90 million trays and 700 tonnes of plastic. On almost half of our citrus range we have launched a LDPE net and LDPE giro band which is recyclable with our carrier bags in store. We have removed all black plastic packaging from our own brand food products. We have replaced almost 4,000 tonnes of black non-detectable plastic.

We have continued to roll out the front of pack recycling icon from 100 products to now over 400 products.

By the end of 2019 our water bottles will contain 25% recycled content. We have added the UK PP table to our packaging policy as a requirement by format and material of the minimum recycled content requirement.

Actions taken

We have removed plastic drinking straws from sale and in our cafes which removes approximately 30T of plastic and 65m plastic straws per year. We have removed cotton buds with plastic stems and replaced them with a paper version. This has removed 60T of plastic and 240m stems per year. We have removed the single use 5p bag and now only offer bags for life. This has saved 273m bags - or 2,597T of plastic from being used a year. We have removed plastic drink stirrers from our cafes and replaced with wooden ones. This has saved 8.9m stirrers from being used a year, equivalent to 4.2T of plastic. We have signed up to and are listed on the refill app, with all of our cafes offering free water refills for customers' drinks bottles. This is highlighted in store and in cafe with PoS. We have also fitted water fountains at all new stores.

81% of our own brand plastic packaging by weight is recyclable. We've moved our polystyrene plastic egg boxes into pulp. This has saved 294T of non-recyclable plastic, which was over 5.5m egg boxes.

We have trialed reverse vending machines which accept PET bottles and cans - to try and improve the recycling rates of these products. In one store we have collected more than 2m containers for recycling, representing 2.5T of plastic. We have supported a six month trial with Hubbub and others on improving on-the-go recycling as part of a project called Leeds by Example. Through this trial we supported a recycling bin in our Leeds city centre store and the communication to citizens on the street bins in the city centre. We have reviewed and confirmed that every store has a film recycling bin in their foyer.

We have achieved an average of 30% recycled content across our milk bottles. Our new PET meat and fish trays are made of a minimum of 80% recycled content. Which is using over 1,000T of recycled plastic a year. We are using our back-of-store plastic film waste - in both our bags for life and waste refuse sacks - which we buy back for our own stores and manufacturing sites.

Fairy and Head & Shoulders

partnered with Keep Britain

Tidy and Tesco to clean up 10

Beaches in the UK.

P&G, TerraCycle and Tesco

partnered for a second year to

give schools in the UK the

chance to win a playground

made from recycled plastic

thanks to Fairy and Febreze.

Community members were

encouraged to get involved

and help their local schools

win by voting for them in the

competition. The ‘Win A

Playground’ competition

focused on raising awareness

of the issue of waste recycling

amongst the youngest in our

society as well as their

communities.

In partnership with

TerraCycle, Head &

Shoulders produced the

world’s first recyclable

shampoo bottle made with

up to 25% recycled beach

plastic. In addition, we also

launched a limited edition

Fairy Beach Plastic bottle

made from 10% beach plastic

and 90% post-consumer

recycled plastic.

90% of all the hair care

bottles sold in the UK across

P&G’s Hair Care portfolio

contain up to 25% post-

consumer recycled plastic.

In the UK, P&G uses on

average 50% recycled plastic

(post–consumer recycled) in

our Lenor and Lenor

Unstoppables bottles and

25% in our Ariel liquid bottles

and 35% in our Ariel Purclean

bottles.

Target 1 Eliminate problematic or unnecessary single-use

packaging through redesign, innovation or alternative (reuse) delivery model.

Target 2 100% of plastics packaging to be

reusable, recyclable or compostable.

Target 3 70% of plastics packaging effectively recycled

or composted.

Target 4 30% average recycled content across all plastic

packaging.

Planned actions

We will continue to

review our

packaging and

identify where we

can reduce our use

of plastic where

possible. As a

company, we have

committed to reduce

50% of our global

use of virgin

petroleum based

plastic packaging

and in Fabric Care

brands (like Ariel

and Lenor) we

commit to 45%

plastics packaging

reduction in the UK

by 2025 v 2018.

By 2022, P&G Fabric

Care aims to make all

its brands’ packaging

100% recyclable in the

UK.

Beginning in October

2019 and running

through the end of the

year (in the US and

UK), Olay will offer

Regenerist Whip

moisturizer with a refill

that fits right in the jar.

P&G is a founding member of

the Alliance to End Plastic

Waste (AEPW), currently made

up of nearly thirty member

companies, which has

committed over $1.0 billion

with the goal of investing $1.5

billion over the next five years

to help end plastic waste in the

environment.

We are leading the industry-

wide project HolyGrail 2.0

aimed at developing

watermark technology to

revolutionize the sorting of

plastic packaging at

sorting/recycling facilities. This

will allow more plastics to be

recycled and improve the

purity of recycled material to

allow for more widespread

use.

By 2020, P&G will increase PCR by up

to 50% in Ariel liquid detergent

bottles and up to 100% PCR PET in

Lenor transparent fabric conditioner

bottles.

By 2020, we plan to double the use of

recycled resin in plastic packaging

globally. So far, we have used

approximately 38,100 metric tons of

PCR in our plastic packaging which is

46% of the way to our goal.

We invented a breakthrough

technology that removes colour,

odour and contaminants from used

polypropylene to restore it to ultra-

pure recycled resin. To drive scale, we

licensed the technology to PureCycle

Technologies, which is completing

construction of its feedstock

evaluation unit and plans to open its

production plant in Ohio in 2020.

PureCycle has sold all of plant one

production for the next 20 years.

Target 2 100% of plastics packaging to be

reusable, recyclable or compostable.

Target 3 70% of plastics packaging effectively recycled or

composted.

Target 4 30% average recycled content

across all plastic packaging.

Actions taken In Q1 2019 we identified where we have non-

detectable carbon black plastic in our packaging

and have confirmed actions to move all elements

to non-carbon alternatives by mid-2021, generating

greater recyclability. We have already been using

non-carbon black technology for some of our

products since Jan 2019, and further actions

include moving to a colour that is NIR detectable

including moving to non-carbon black technology.

In the UK no black plastic will be used by Q1 2020.

We identified Poly-Oxymethylene (POM) in our

triggers as problematic for recycling of PET and

therefore developed an innovative new design.

This has been implemented across our cleaning

business in the UK with Dettol, Vanish, and Cillit

Bang.

Launched a flexible plastics

recycling program with

TerraCycle to recycle all our

flexible plastic packaging in

2019.

Started identifying suppliers

for flexible laminates that are

widely recyclable.

We are redesigning products

to reduce the amount of

plastic used in products,

developing alternative

material streams such as

paper-based barrier

laminates, and reconciling

bottle size & shapes to reduce

complexity and waste from

machines.

Membership with OPRL to roll out

recycling labels on our packaging from

2019- with Phase 1 near completion.

Launched content on Amazon and on

our most visited cleaners pages to

inform consumers how to recycle our

products.

Dettol launched a "Spring Clean

Challenge" in spring 2019 to clean the

Thames to drive awareness of

reducing single-use plastic. It involved

consumers, customers and had over

802 million media reach.

Procurement started

identifying key suppliers

that will help us source

the right quality PCR

(post consumer resin) at

the volumes we need.

R&D has started testing

our key formulations

against bottles that have

a 30% PCR content.

Most of our Airwick

blisters are produced

with 50% PET PCR for

more than 3 years and

now in 2019 we

increased to 70% PET

PCR for some products.

Planned actions RB started the program to exit PVC in 2004 and by

2009 no products in our portfolio, outside of

medicines, carry this material. We have continued

to use PVC only on our medicines portfolio due to

the safety, quality and regulatory requirements.

This is less than 3% of our total volume. We are

investing now in finding alternative PVC-free

materials for our medicine portfolio as soon as

possible. However, we anticipate this will be a

highly challenging & long-term initiative in order to

comply with the stringent consumer safety

standards and licensing authorisations. We are

determining how we can meet the goal best

without compromising public health requirements.

Develop action plans by end 2019 to ensure that our plastic packaging will be recyclable or reusable by 2025. Develop recyclability guidelines based on OPRL to inform marketing and R&D teams on how best to develop products to design for recyclability.

RB has commenced roll out of OPRL

labelling across our UK

portfolio. Phase 1 of implementation

across the Hygiene Home portfolio is

near completion. Phase 2

implementation across the Health &

medicines portfolio is under review –

awaiting review of regulatory

implications and the new OPRL

guidelines that are due Q4 2019.

Hygiene Home and Aircare products

will be live on OPRL APP when it's

launched in Q4 2019.

RB is actively pursuing

partnerships with PCR

suppliers. Following

analysis of market &

business prioritized, we

have developed a

roadmap outlining which

brands, regions & % PCR

are to be prioritize. Initial

testing for formula &

pack stability is

underway.

Planned actions We have a very limited number of ePS shelf trays on denture care, totalling less than 1 ton globally (0.001% of total volume). We are actively seeking alternatives to replace this.

All our labels and sleeves will be developed with the recycling process in mind to support ease of removal and material identification to support recycling. We are in the process of implementing monitoring trackers for our primary packaging plastic formats to measure progress against reuse and recyclability. Secondary and tertiary plastic pack formats are now being evaluated and will be implemented as well into the monitoring process as a second phase.

RB UK has cooperated with Terracyle to recycle the materials that are not yet widely recyclable at local council level, including e.g. flexible laminates for wipes and pouches. Dettol, Vanish, Finish & Airwick are participating in the scheme at 978 locations across the UK.

See previous slide

Actions taken Removed 290m plastic bags for loose items in produce equating to 489 tonnes of plastic and offered a reusable alterative. Removed 20m polystyrene pizza bases equating to 180 tonnes of plastic and replaced with a recyclable board base. Removed plastic bags from online deliveries. Lightweighting and increased recycled content in our plastic water bottles.

68.2% of our own brand and branded plastic packaging is widely recyclable with an extra 12.5% recyclable at store with carrier bags. Most of our produce is now out of black plastic and we have started to move out of it in meat too. We have removed black plastic trays from chilled ready meals – we were the first retailer to offer a recyclable alternative in our own-brand range, saving over 1,000 tonnes of hard to recycle plastic each year.

We accept carrier bags and all film marked with the ‘recycle with bags at larger stores’ OPRL logo on the doorstep during an online delivery. We provide carrier bag/ LDPE recycling in all supermarket stores. We are collecting bottles and PTT in over 400 stores, all of which also have carrier bag recycling too. We are piloting Deposit Return schemes to ensure we find the most convenient and effective version for our customers.

Nearly 40% of our plastic packaging already uses recycled content. Average 26% of post consumer recycled content used in our own brand plastic packaging. Tu clothing hangers are now made from 100% recycled materials.

Actions taken Unilever has launched Cif ecorefills, new at-home technology that allows consumers to refill and reuse their Cif spray bottles for life. Made with 75% less plastic, the ecorefill attaches to the current Cif bottle where it releases super-concentrated product; the bottle is then filled with water at home. Unilever introduced triggerless Cif Power & Shine Kitchen and Bathroom cleaners that allow reuse of the trigger spray from a previous pack, to reduce plastic usage.

PG tips led the market in moving to using fully biodegradable, plant-based material to heat seal the teabags in 2018. The tea bags use corn starch which is 100% biodegradable and 100% renewable. Householders can recycle the biodegradable tea bags by putting them in their local council food waste collection. Unilever pioneered a new detectable black pigment for its HDPE bottles for its leading brands Tresemme and Lynx so they can be detected by recycling scanners and successfully sorted for recycling. This move to used detectable black plastic also creates the possibility for us to use the recycled material back into our bottles.

We continue to add OPRL labels to our UK & Ireland packs to provide householders with simple information on what do to with the packaging once they have used the product. This includes: Colman’s, Knorr, Hellmann’s, Pot Noodle, Pot Pasta, Pot Rice, Marmite, PG Tips and Scottish Blend tea, Comfort Intense, Surf liquid and powder, Domestos bleach, the majority of our Persil packs, Seventh Generation, Cif Cream and Cif floor cleaner, Lynx and Sure deodorant ranges, and Alberto Balsam.

Unilever continues with its programme towards using more recycled content in its portfolio: We are now using 100% recycled content in our packs for Comfort Intense, Seventh Generation and Cif Nature’s Recipe. The new detectable Lynx and Tresemme black bottles will be using 30% PCR. In 2018 we launched our new personal care brand, Love Beauty & Planet, which uses bottles that are 100% recycled and recyclable. LBP also uses a special adhesive to enable labels to separate cleanly from the bottle. We have introduced our Domestos Power 5 Eco pack which has a 100% recycled blister pack and cage.

Planned actions Unilever has announced ambitious new commitments to reduce our plastic waste and help create a circular economy for plastics. By 2025 we will halve our use of virgin plastic, by reducing our absolute use of plastic packaging by more than 100,000 tonnes and accelerating our use of recycled plastic. We have also committed to help collect and process more plastic packaging than we sell. Dove has announced a global move to new plastic free packaging for its iconic beauty bar. Work is underway to replace the plastic outer-wrap of its beauty bar multipacks with a zero-plastic material. We have been trialling ways to remove the plastic film that covers our PG tips boxes. Our ambition is to remove the overwrap from the range of PG Tips by the end of 2020.

We are in the process of switching our Domestos Sink and Pipe Unblocker bottles to using detectable black plastic. In 2020 we will be moving to a cardboard backing for our Domestos toilet rim blocks which currently have a film backing.

Unilever will be rapidly accelerating our use of recycled plastic to hit our virgin plastic reduction goal, in addition to an absolute reduction. Unilever’s beauty brand Dove has announced a global move to using 100% recycled plastic in its bottled products. The new commitments are part of Dove’s 2025 commitment to reduce plastic waste, which will see the brand avoid the use of more than 20,500 tonnes of virgin plastic globally per year. We will be introducing recycled plastic into our Magnum ice cream tubs in 2020.

Actions taken ALPLA do not use any materials deemed problematic or unnecessary and commit to ensuring this continues.

ALPLA only manufacture packaging using fully recyclable polymers: HDPE, PET and PP.

All ALPLA packaging formats manufactured by ALPLA such as plastic Bottles, Containers and Caps/Closures are all made from fully recyclable polymers and all widely collected from the UK households via the various Local Authority collection schemes.

ALPLA Milk bottle packaging typically contain 30% to 40% food grade HDPE (rHDPE) which is a fully UK sourced and processed recycled material. PET container can contain various addition rates typically 30% to 40%, however some packaging formats do contain up to 100% rPET. Currently there is no approved rPP recycled material available due to there being no approved processing facilities.

Planned actions Will not introduce any plastic materials or items deemed problematic or unnecessary to their operation.

We don’t currently intend to consider using compostable plastics.

ALPLA will continue to use recyclable polymers, HDPE, PET, and PP. All of our packaging formats are fully recyclable.

Actions taken In October 2018 Coveris launched our single-substrate, recyclable PE+ film across Co-op prepared produce and Tesco organic salads. The film is recycled in the same way as carrier bags at larger stores. This was followed by the launch of a single-substrate PE/PE laminate – MonoFlexE pouches and films that is 100% recyclable in the same way.

In November 2019 we launched a new 100% recyclable, up to 100% recycled shrink film that contains up to 50% post-consumer recyclate (PCR) and optional pre-consumer top-up material.

Planned actions The majority of packaging we supply is film packaging which is not currently collected for recycling from UK households. We need to work with LA’s and recyclers to enable this to happen. PE films are able to be recycled at front of store collection points and we are working to move more of this packaging portfolio to this material.

We are working with our customers to influence the use of materials which can be recycled by consumers at front of store collection points.

As one of Europe’s largest extruders of PE films, we are supporting the use of these films given the ease and high-quality of recyclability as both mono and single-substrate laminate structures. PE films can currently be recycled at front of store collection points but is likely to move to kerbside as an outcome of the recent Government consultations.

Actions taken We removed all Carbon Black products! We identified all black products in our portfolio and worked with the customers to reformulate to other colours. We worked with our customers to change all polystyrene products to either polypropylene or RPET, including multipacks with a innovative Polypropylene solution. We worked with a breakfast product produced to redesign their product to a fully recyclable solution and eliminate the use of a single use shrinksleeve.

‘Design for recycle’ integrated in our NPD process to ensure all new products are 100% recyclable. This new procedure prohibited material use, ensured customers were reducing weight of products, and involved testing of coloured products through existing recycling systems. In one example, it identified a new red product that failed detection in a recycling centre, as it contained carbon black pigment. This was then reformulated and designed for recycling.

Joined OPRL and actively promoted this to customers for NPD and relaunches. We have increased the number of products with OPRL labelling by >80% in 2019 We are collaborating with other producers of plastic/cardboard combination pots to have increased recycling rates via technological solutions and consumer engagement.

Since 2018 we have worked with customers to sample products with RPET content in the range of 30-100%. We have converted all our PET range to 30% recycled content as a minimum. We have developed a range of fully recyclable cardboard/RPET combination products as an alternative to PP with up to 100% RPET.

Planned actions Continuing the work of 2019 of stopping Polystyrene manufacture, we will fully deplete stock of PS, and fully replace all multipacks with our innovative PP 4-pack and 6-pack products, in partnership with our customers and retailers.

By end of June 2020, 100% of primary packaging produced in the UK will be defined as widely recyclable.

Work with customers to ensure that OPRL labelling is present on >95% decorated products by end of 2021. Further Collaboration with

recyclers on introduce

Actions taken We helped a major retailer meet their commitment to replace PVC cling film from their own-branded products with an alternative recyclable material by the end of 2019. Working in collaboration with machine providers, the retailer, and their food suppliers for sausage and mushroom lines, we trialled a Polyolefin (PO) cling film developed by kp, helping them find the sustainable material they wanted that can be recycled with old plastic carrier bags at their in-store return schemes.

Some examples include:

All our PET trays are recyclable. Our newly launched kp InfinityTM trays made from expanded PP have also undergone several trials and tests, demonstrating full recyclability with the main PP stream. We have run several successful trials to demonstrate the recyclability of rPET trays with partners and collaborating with our rPET flake suppliers to increase tray flake.

The #LeedsByExample campaign is increasing the awareness of recycling on-the-go in Leeds city centre. kp are creating a closed loop process by receiving the PCR rPET to create more protective food packaging – to be replicated across other UK regions. Circular Economy of a PCR rPET tray video: Following the journey of our Elite tray through every stage of the supply and value chain we created a short educational video illustrating the closed loop process, now viewed by over 20,000 people online and via our social media platforms. Sponsors of StarPack Awards - working with children and students at the school, college and university level to develop the packaging technologists of our future. To help close the loop on plastics we continue to proactively engage with stakeholders throughout the sector, encouraging the increased use of recycled materials and lobbying for improvements in recycling infrastructure. We need to transform collection and recycling around the world. Our partnerships with many organisations and associations to drive this include: EUPC, PCE; PET Sheet; PET Core; IVK, CEFLEX; RECOUP; The BPF; FPA; Packaging Federation; INCPEN; NAPCOR; APR; SPC.

Our RFresh® Elite trays in the UK are made from 100% PCR (post-consumer recycled) PET. We have signed long term contracts with select recycled material suppliers to secure significant supplies of PCR material. kp is the largest consumer of PCR rPET flake in the UK. Globally we use 140,000 tonnes of PCR annually. We continue to lead tray to tray recycling projects & initiatives in our key countries and are working hard with our partners upstream and downstream to see how we can create a PET tray recycling stream that can generate a stable supply of high quality recyclate so that we are truly closing the loop. We source PCR PET from suppliers who work with supply chains where PET containers are collected, sorted and recycled in deprived areas, thereby generating social, environmental and economic benefits to local communities. In addition, we have signed up to the Circular Plastics Alliance Declaration.

Planned actions As part of our Positive Plastics Pledge - our strategy for the sustainable management of plastics for a circular economy, and as a signatory and Advisory Group member of the UK Plastics Pact, we have committed to:

Optimise resource use for packaging while ensuring the protection of its contents. We’re also reducing the weight of our packaging and downgauging. We seek to create a balance to optimise the amount of plastic we use, keeping it as light and resource-efficient as possible while ensuring it’s still preserving and protecting the product. We have developed a material strategy and an annualised road map for each material we use, substituting those that are deemed problematic to recycle in today's collection, sorting and recycling infrastructure. We are simplifying the range of materials we use and making it clearer how each product can be recycled, we hope to make collection, sorting and recycling much easier for everyone.

As part of our Positive Plastics Pledge, we have also committed to use only materials that are practically recyclable or sustainably sourced. We are phasing out non-recyclable plastics, where functional and sustainable alternatives exist, without contributing to food waste. We’re already looking at developing new materials and, while many of them are only at the research stage, we’re investing in the right solutions.

Within our Positive Plastics Pledge we are also committed to engage with consumers to help people understand the value of plastics waste. By giving people clearer information, through on-pack labelling and wider engagement with communities and campaigns, we can communicate the purpose and benefits of packaging, and how it can be recycled. This will also allow us to explain why it’s a much better solution to prevent plastic waste ending up in landfill, as litter on our streets or in our oceans.

Actions taken Mainetti's reuse and recycling schemes are developed as partnerships with our customers.

Equipment that is unique to Mainetti and the processes we use in the recycling activity ensures that all of the waste streams are managed in the most environmentally responsible manner and that none of the waste material generated goes to landfill.

Planned actions Reuse and Recycling are expanding activities within the Mainetti Group which are underpinned by continuous investment, our commitment to this important part of the hanger supply market. Whenever possible we reclaim hangers for reuse.

We actively encourage our customers and provide the necessary support and advice, securing the highest possible number of recyclable hangers that are returned to the recycling centre.

Any hanger that cannot be reused is granulated and the reclaimed material is used for producing new hangers.

Actions Taken All our products used in packaging are compostable.

We continue to work with the Co-operative, local authorities and organic recyclers to help replace single-use plastic bags by compostable bags in more than half of it’s Co-op stores. The bags are made from MATER-BI bioplastic and can be re-used for shopping or for collecting kitchen food scraps.

In October 2018 Novamont opened the Mater–Biopolymer plant. The plant produces biopolyesters with a high level of renewables, using raw materials as biobutandiol and azelaic acid which are used in the MATER-BI® compostable bioplastics.

renewable feedstocks in

our upstream operations,

to end-of-life where we

are using chemistry to

enable recycling.

For SABIC, innovation involves

developing technologies to improve the

efficiency of manufacturing facilities,

reducing costs and environmental

impacts, and creating the products and

solutions our customers need. There is

an urgent need for sustainable

packaging solutions that are designed

with recycling in mind and offer a

reduced carbon footprint per produced

unit. SABIC’s Design for Recyclability
