EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The summer training that we do is to get an experience of how the corporate world functions

and how the theory is different from the practical aspects of the industry. For the same

purpose I got an opportunity for my training at ACC Concrete, Mumbai in Administrative

Division in Human Resource Department.

There were two projects that were completed by me:-

1.) Conducting Employee Engagement activity & survey at Plant level.

In this project was to find out what level of engagement do employees at plant level feel for

their work and how can you further motivate them to work better for the organization so that

they feel more engaged towards their work. First I was to select the appropriate research

method, which was taken up as survey method through filling up of questionnaires by

employees at Plant and conducting TUG-O-WAR at all the 6 plants in Mumbai and then as

intern conducted a survey by visiting different concrete plants of the companies in Mumbai

sion , Borivali, deonar , palawa , lower parel & bhayenderpada .

My project consisted of the questionnaire related to current employee engagement activity

conducted and employee engagement issues in the company

Through the survey, many different factors came in picture which may help the organization

to improve the morale & participation level of employees towards work.

Employee self recognition and appraisal

Showing respect towards workers

Proper drinking facilities

Rest rooms and canteen facilities

One day off in a week

6

Page 7: 1. Tittle acc main project Shivam chauhan

2.) Conducting Employee Engagement activity and employee birthday celebration on Corporate Level

In this I was to make arrangements for employee’s birthday celebration at the end of each

month along with dusherra and diwali celebration. Further estimating budgets for diwali gifts

to employees and also deciding it and designing employee birthday calendar.

3.) Maintaining Employee Leave data through SAP

In this I was asked to maintain the leave attendance of employees at all plants as well as

corporate level manually on employee leave attendance form.

4.) Recruiting QA/QC Engineer for Mumbai region

In this we were given source of recruitment as Naukri.com from where we have to search

pool of potential candidate, invite them for interview and then final selection of them.

INTRODUCTION

During my summer internship, I was assigned the project to conduct employee engagement

at plant level by Acc Concrete Ltd., for this I had to conduct TUG-O-WAR at plant level and

then take a survey from the employees.

My project was to study about their perception towards the company and to identify whether

there is a need to conduct such activities or not i.e. these activities are a sense of relaxation

for employees if they are preferring it then it must be more and more be introduced .then my

second task was to prepare employee birthday calendar and along with it select and decide for

employee diwali gifts for all level .my third task was to recruit 1 QA/QC engineer for

Mumbai region through web portal naukri .com . My fourth task was to organize diwali and

dusherra festival along with employee birthday celebration. My fifth task was to manage

employee leave data manually through SAP.

The primary objective of this project was to conduct employee engagement activity at

plant level

An attempt was made to study the employee’s perception about the activity being

conducted and about the company, which will give a thorough analysis for the future

growth of the company.

To encourage and enhance good relations among employees through all these

activities

To study the employees problems at all levels of plant from shop floor to top most

management.

To understand the recruiting process for hiring quality engineer for ACC.

The data collected by me will help the company for future growth of the company

The study would provide a hand in live experience for the trainee on how one can be

able to fulfill the job needs and satisfactorily carry out his/her work with sincerity and

honesty. It will provide an exposure in the real life work.

COMPANY AND PRODUCT PROFILE

OVERVIEW OF CONCRETE INDUSTRY

The Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) industry is growing due to the superior technical properties over normal concrete, but the potential is still hugeThe Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) industry in India is in its early stages with cement consumption of just 2-3 per cent of total production. This is evident from the fact that in the West, the RMC consumes 60 per cent of total cement production. However, since the demand for RMC is expected to grow exponentially, cement manufacturers in India such as Ultratech, ACC, Madras Cements, India Cements, Ambuja Cements, among others, have forayed into the business. As the industry grows, it will make aggregate distribution and production more organized as large players are likely to venture into the aggregates business themselves or have a long-term relationship with commercial aggregate companies. The cement companies are able to leverage the RMC market in a better way since cement is one of the essential ingredients in the manufacture of RMC. Of course, acquiring and operating suitable aggregate quarries in India is a difficult task, but since cement companies possess sufficient experience in limestone quarrying will have technical competency of running such captive operations too.

The use of RMC is growing due to its superior technical properties than normal concrete. The difference between normal concrete and RMC lies in the technology used for production, transportation and placement. In the case of RMC, all the ingredients are proportioned in accordance with the standard codes of practice to get the targeted strength and durability. The quality of concrete depends on the way it is mixed, placed, compacted, finished, cured and protected. RMC used in construction makes it possible to achieve speed with qualityThe acceptability of RMC is certainly high in large cities and metros and as many as around 40 cities are currently using RMC for several infrastructure projects. Specifications in tenders by municipal corporations, public works and other government bodies will play a big role in growth of RMC.

ACC is one of India’s foremost cement manufacturers with a countrywide network of factories. Established in 1936, the company set up India’s first commercial Ready Mix Concrete (RMX) plant in Mumbai in the year 1994. Today this business has been reorganized as a separate company called ACC Concrete Limited which is one of the largest manufacturers of RMX in India with over 55 modern plants in major cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Goa, Pune and Ahmedabad. ACC has won accolades for environment friendly measures taken at its plants and mines, and has also been felicitated for its acts of good corporate citizenship.. ACC is now part of the worldwide Holcim Group. ACC is the most preferred cement brand name in India

COMPANY PROFILE

ACC (ACC Limited) is India's foremost manufacturer of cement and concrete. ACC's operations are spread throughout the country with 17 modern cement factories, more than 40 Ready mix concrete plants, 21 sales offices, and several zonal offices. It has a workforce of about 9,000 persons and a countrywide distribution network of over 9,000 dealers. ACC has rich experience in mining, being the largest user of limestone. As the largest cement producer in India, it is one of the biggest customers of the domestic coal industry, of Indian Railways, and a considerable user of the country’s road transport network services for inward and outward movement of materials and products. ACC plants, mines and townships visibly demonstrate successful endeavours in quarry rehabilitation, water management techniques and ‘greening’ activities. The company actively promotes the use of alternative fuels and raw materials and offers total solutions for waste management including testing, suggestions for reuse, recycling and co-processing.ACC was the first recipient of ASSOCHAM’s first ever National Award for outstanding performance in promoting rural and agricultural development activities in 1976. Decades later, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry selected ACC as winner of its Good Corporate Citizen Award for the year 2002. Over the years, there have been many awards and felicitations for achievements in Rural and community development, Safety, Health, Tree plantation, afforestation, Clean mining, Environment awareness and protection.

PRODUCT PROFILE

READY MIX CONCRETE:ACC set up India's first commercial Ready Mix Concrete (RMC or RMX) plant in Mumbai in 1994. ACC Concrete is one of the largest manufacturers of RMX in India with over 50 modern plants in major cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi. Hyderabad, Goa, Pune and Ahmedabad.Ready Mix Concrete, or RMX as it is popularly called, refers to concrete that is specifically manufactured for delivery to the customer's construction site in a freshly mix and plastic or unhardened state. Concrete itself is a mixture of Portland Cement, water and aggregates comprising sand and gravel or crushed stone. In traditional work sites, each of these materials is procured separately and mix in specified proportions at site to make concrete. Ready Mix Concrette is bought and sold by volume - usually expressed in cubic meters. RMX can be custom-made to suit different applications.

High Strength Concrete High Performance Concrete Self-leveling Concrete Self-compacting Concrete Coloured Concrete Concrete made with binary and ternary blends of cements Early strength Concrete Fibre reinforced Concrete

11

Page 12: 1. Tittle acc main project Shivam chauhan

Ready Mix Concrete is manufactured under computer-controlled operations and transported and placed at site using sophisticated equipment and methods. RMX assures its customers numerous benefits:

Uniform, consistent and assured quality of concrete Flexibility in concrete design mixes Easier addition of admixtures Faster and speedier construction Reduced inventories, material handling and storage of raw materials at sites Savings in labour requirements, labour costs and supervision of labour Reduced wastage of materials

These of RMX is an environmental friendly practice that ensures a cleaner work place and causes minimal disturbance to its surroundings. This makes its utility more significant in crowded cities and sensitive localities. In contrast to this, conventional methods of making, transporting and placing concrete at most construction sites are somewhat labour-intensive and suffer from practices which may be erratic and not very systematic. Therefore the use of Ready Mix Concrete can prove to more cost effective in the longer term while ensuring that structures are built faster and using concrete that comes with higher levels of quality assurance.

  CENTRAL PROCUREMENT :

ACC has a countrywide spread of 17 modern cement plants. This large network of manufacturing units consumes a wide spectrum of inputs – about 60,000 different items ranging from Coal, Gypsum, Slag, Packaging material (bags), Refractories, Steel, Grinding Media, Electrodes, Cables, Bearings, Conveyor Belts, Spares of various mechanical, electrical and instrumentation equipment, Mining Equipment and their spares and explosives.ACC has a vendor base of more than 6000 suppliers spread across the country.A team of professionals at Corporate, Regions and Plant Level manages the procurement function. The function is organized so as to derive maximum value for the company through economies of scale from central pooling and procurement of some inputs at the corporate level while meeting individual operational requirements at plant level. The Procurement function comprises a Central procurement team at the corporate office for the requirement of major inputs for the operations of cement plants.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY:

Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) is a vital part of ACC’s journey towards Sustainable development. Safety Audits are being carried out in ACC since 1995 by National Safety Council based on the 5 Star Auditing System of British Safety Council. There is a continuous effort to measure and improve Safety Management Systems to avoid accidents. We have an Apex OH & S Committee headed by the Managing Director. This committee oversees implementation of our OH & S policy Each of our plants and manufacturing units have Professional Doctors and medical facilities for continuous monitoring and observation of workplace hygiene and occupational health.

The following are some OH & S initiatives at our plants:

OH & S brochures, signages, posters and mailers used extensively Monthly Safety Gate Meetings held at all our plants. Safety Audit and TPM Audits carried out annually Safety Professionals meets twice a year to discuss and share  knowledge on Safety

Statistics and implementation of safety  measures at each unit. Safety Observation Tours (SOT) conducted weekly by all line  managers Behavioral Safety Training programmes for workers at all plants Incident investigations for all incidents including near misses (with  potential for

injuries). The findings and recommendation are  shared across the company

HR AT ACC Ltd

Employee welfare receives prime attention at ACC. We have severalschemes for general welfare of employees and their families. These cover education, healthcare, retirement benefits, loans and financial assistance and recreation facilities. ACC townships have excellent schools that are often the best in the district. Education at these schools is subsidized for employees’ wards. We offer attractive scholarship allowances for children studying at places away from their parents, merit scholarships for outstanding children and financial assistance for employees’ children to pursue higher professional education.Liberal medical benefits are made available to employees and their family members by way of reimbursements towards normal medical treatment, domiciliary treatments and special sanctions for serious illness. Each of our townships has well-equipped health care centres with qualified medical staff and facilities, ambulance, referrals and tie-ups with reputed hospitals for specialised treatment. In addition, there are regular health checkups, camps and programmes.Employees are eligible to apply for loans and financial assistance for various purposes such as purchase of assets, residential premises as well as a scheme that provides for supply of cement at subsidized rates to those building their own houses. At our cement plants and factories, employees are provided furnished and unfurnished accommodation based on their entitlements. At many locations, the employees are given free electricity, free water supply and free bus facility for nearby places and schools. These houses are well-maintained and periodically upgraded.

5.3RESEARCH METHODOLOGY:-

1.3.1 Introduction of Research:-

Research is a process with the help of which new concepts arises. It is the increase in

the actual knowledge stock. It can be called as movement from known to unknown

and vice-versa. It is also a continuous process. It is a scientific as well as systematic

process, which includes defining and redefining the problem to develop hypothesis, to

collect and define the information/data, to analysis the information and bring out the

mother of discovery. An individual makes the effort in research and society or public

takes its benefits because the results are usually generalized.

5.3.2 Methodology:-

Research Methodology means the method carried out to study the problem. It shows

the type of research design, sources used to acquire data, handling challenges during

the course of study. This report follows a two way data collection. One part of data

collection is entirely based on secondary data. And another part is based on primary

data. After collecting the data from various sources regarding the objectives, it was

then tabulated in Ms Excel.

A study is conducted to know the views of the Employees on the Current System.

To know the attitude of the Employees data is collected through structured ).

questionnaire (Where questions are in pre-arranged order

The questionnaire consists dichromatic, multiple choice and open ended questions.

The questionnaire is designed for Employees working with ACC Concrete;

Exploratory research helps us to determine the best research design and data

collection method. There are various data limitations; we need to take decision in

short period of time for which exploratory research is suitable.

33

Page 34: 1. Tittle acc main project Shivam chauhan

5.3.3 Data Source:-

Research included gathering both primary and secondary data. Primary data is the

first hand data, which are selected a fresh and thus happen to be original in character.

Primary data feedback was collected from the existing employees about their work

and level of satisfaction .

Secondary data are thosewhich have been collected by someone else and which

already have been passed through statistical process. The sources of secondary data

are internet, companies websites, newspapers and magazines.

5.3.4 Research Approach:-

The research approach used was survey method which is a widely used method for

data collection and best suited for descriptive type of research. Survey includes

research instrument like questionnaire which can be structured and unstructured.

Target population is well defined and various methods like telephonic interviews and

personal interviews are employed.

5.4 SAMPLING METHOD:-

The target customers for the company are own employees and contract employees . The

study is conducted for west Mumbai region .To achieve the objectives, both primary and

secondary research has been done.

1.4.1 Sample size

A sample size of 65 has been taken for data collection. The respondents wereof

Haryana, UP, Gujarat, Pune. The survey was carried out for 7 weeks.

34

Page 35: 1. Tittle acc main project Shivam chauhan

5.5LIMITATIONS OF RESEARCH METHODOLOGY :-

Despite its scope, this methodology presents certain limits that must be taken into

account-

The time constraint is a major reason for incomprehensiveness.

Respondents were not willing to give their time for survey due to consistently

ongoing process 24*7

The sampling frame to conduct the study has been restricted to only existing &

potential customers.

Respondents were not willing to share correct information.

The views of people are biased therefore it doesn’t reflect true picture.

The data that has been obtained through the survey has been done manually.

The suggestions provided are as per the retailers understanding and could vary

from person to person.

Many respondents were not keen to answer the questionnaire.

In my server, I have taken a sample size of 200 retail shops, but only 61 retailers

responded.

5.6 SCOPE OF THE RESEARCH:-

1. Only the Employee Engagement is considered.

2. The study is conducted at ACC Concrete , Mumbai with a simple sample size

of only 65 employees .

3. In order to analyze the study the questionnaire has been designed as per

employees convenience

An analysis of a feedback obtained from 65 respondents of different age group, qualification,

skill, designation of the department in ACC Concrete , at West Mumbai Division was done

through tabulation and pie-chart. Each question of the questionnaire, used for survey, was

translated into separate pie chart with percentage break-up. The questionnaire utilized for the

purpose of the research was a semi-quantative one.

The questionnaire dealt with different issues, which are considered to be critical factors of

employee engagement. Few of the questions were like, “involvement of the employees in

decision making”, “employee moral”, “honest and two way communication between the

managers and workers”, “commitment to the assigned job”, etc.

However to reduce the level of the biasness in the research, the questionnaire didn’t include

the personal details like name and designation of the employees, but other details like age

group, education qualification, skill set etc. were included in it. These details were helpful in

knowing the attitude and the level of commitment of the employees towards the organization.

A detailed analysis of all the aspects affecting employees engagement at West Mumbai

Division of ACC Concrete Steel reveled the following facts and figures.

FINDINGS

Based on the analysis and interpretation of the data, findings are recorded which are

as follows-

As survey is conducted across 6 different plant locations in Mumbai, Maharashtra the

perception of employees may or may not greatly vary from one plant to another .

Employee engagement activity played a great role for motivating employees; hence it

should be conducted more often from time to time. .

The employees in Borivili and Palawa plant seems more likely and willing towards

conducting such activity and participated with full enthusiasm .

61

Page 62: 1. Tittle acc main project Shivam chauhan

Proper canteen and drinking water facility was provided in only one plant out of the 6

plants visited .

Understood the procees of recruitment for hiring potential candidates in ACC

Concrete .

Designing employee birthday calendar and representing their names on calendar made

them feel much more attached and a feeling of belongingness .

Most of the employees reach office on time except a few ,it clearly shows a healthy

workplace to work .

By organizing festivals like Diwali,Dusherra created a joyful environment for

employees in the organization

Timely payment of salary doesn’t remain the key motivators all the time to keep

employee engaged but ,providing canteen ,restrooms one day off in a week ,arranging

a small movie time for employees within a plant can make them more engaged .

Excess of water logging in some plants can create a problem in smooth

functioning ,therefore need to be rectified soon .

CONCLUSION

Employee Engagement is the buzz word term for employee communication. It is a positive

attitude held by the employees towards the organization and its values. It is rapidly gaining

popularity, use and importance in the workplace and impacts Organizations in many ways.

Employee engagement emphasizes the importance of employee communication on the

success of a business. An organization should thus recognize employees, more than any other

variable, as powerful contributors to a company's competitive position. Therefore employee

engagement should be a continuous process of learning, improvement, measurement and

action.

62

Page 63: 1. Tittle acc main project Shivam chauhan

We would hence conclude that raising and maintaining employee engagement lies in the

hands of an organization and requires a perfect blend of time, effort, commitment and

investment to craft a successful Endeavour.

Key Learning’s:-

Learned to deal with people and also to understand the ability to engage employees in the

organization which is very important ingredient in Human resource

The recruitment process provided us the insight as to what actually recruitment process is

and tactics to communicate with candidates while recruiting them

Money cannot be solely be only factor important to keep employees motivated all the

time ,other factor needs to be taken into consideration such as recognition, proper hygiene

facilities ,festive bonus etc

RECOMMENDATIONS:-

Proper arrangement of first aid facilities & room for employees at all plants should be

made mandatory and also an ambulance van for critical injury

Dealing with employees and worker with equal respect at workplace irrespective of

positions they hold.

Improvement in Employee Relationship and Communication.

To provide bonus to employee on festivals to make them more attached and motivated

towards the organization.

63

Page 64: 1. Tittle acc main project Shivam chauhan

To incur recruitment from only one source cannot provide potential candiadate for

the desired job ,organization should switch on to few other sites such as times job,

monster job etc

Organization should continue conducting these activities from time to time,it should

not be like conducting once in every 6 months , it demolishes their will to participate .

Like employee birthday calendar for corporate employees, similarly employee

birthday calendar for worker at plant level should also be done .

Arrangement of suggestion and query box in each and every plant should be done

and Initiate Immediate Action for employee responses to queries and problems .

Cameras should be installed within the office premises so that employee timely work

and individual performance can be timely measured & also safety of employee

belongings .

Apart from carom , arrangements for chess, dart and pool should be also installed.
