To all in the Uplands Community,
The term ended today with two
wonderful celebrations. The Primary
School led the start of Chinese New Year
celebrations, wearing splashes of red
and gold, with a Lion Dance Celebration
in and around the school.
This was followed by the Secondary Awards
Ceremony in the Multi Purpose Hall. We were pleased to
welcome over 200 parents to the event, as well as several
members of the Board of Governors, as we celebrated the many
successes of the students in the Secondary School. The
assembly also enabled students to demonstrate their musical,
singing and drama talents.
These were fitting ways to end what has been a very busy term
in all areas of the school.
I would like to thank UPTA for their time and effort in
decorating the school and providing the oranges and Ang Pao
packets for the students.
This newsletter is packed with information about recent and
future events, please read it to the end, there is so much in it!
May I wish everyone a wonderful and prosperous Chinese
New Year. Gong Xi Fa Cai!
Yours sincerely,
Matthew Bristow

Today all Year 11 & 13 students will receive their full academic report comprising of their Mock
Examination results as well as their Predicted Grades. Please ensure you sit down with your
child and discuss this report. It is extremely important to do this to ensure that you are both
aware of the progress made, or any challenges that need addressing, before the important
external examinations which start in May.
Please be reminded that Year 11 & 13 Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday,
18th March, between 4:00pm and 8:00pm in the Block F MPH. It is important for you and your
child to attend these conferences. You will receive an email today regarding the online booking
process.
In regard to booking your Parent Teacher Conference appointment, please note the following:
Access to the online booking system OPENED at 12:00pm on Friday 5th February 2016
Access to the online booking system will CLOSE at 12:00pm on Monday 15th February 2016 –
after this time you will not be able to make or change any appointments.
Appointment slots are for 5 minutes only. If you require more time with any teacher, please
consult the teacher in question and agree on a mutual time to meet again.
Please be punctual to all of your appointments and leave sufficient time between appointments.
Each teacher will only have the designated 5 minute time slot to meet with you. If you are late,
the teacher is unlikely to be able to see you unless he/she happens to be free at that time. Please
do not surpass your allocated appointment time as this will interfere with other parents and
their schedules.
It is important that your child attends these Parent Teacher Conferences with you, to hear the
feedback from their teachers.
This afternoon we held our mid-year Secondary Awards Ceremony, which was well attended
by the Uplands community. There were over 400 awards received by our secondary students
for effort and attainment as well as academic excellence.
Congratulations to all of the students who received awards and a big thank you to Mr Paul
Rose for organising this special assembly.
I hope you all have a great half term holiday, and for those who are travelling, keep safe!

Well-being Week (Gong Xi Fa Cai)
At the end of Term 1, in the lead up to final revision for Mock Exams, Mr Skinner and I spoke to
Year 13 and Year 11 students about finding the right balance in their very busy lives at school
and home. Naturally, we discussed with the students the importance of being diligent and
efficient in their studies and preparation for their exams, and also in being resilient through the
Mock Exam session. Our students have achieved excellent results and we look forward to their
continued and expected success in May and June.
I would like to share with parents that Mr Skinner and I also talked to the students about taking
time for themselves during this coming Chinese New Year break. Some students require
'permission' from parents and carers in order to relax and take some time away from their
studies. Please give this permission to your child. Last December it was important for students
to know that before their Mock Exams, they should work hard and consistently throughout the
month of January, knowing that they could and should look forward to a break now at Chinese
New Year. This Chinese New Year holiday is the time for students to refresh their minds,
replenish themselves physically and spiritually, and to reset themselves emotionally. During
this Chinese New Year celebration, we especially encourage those students who are in their
exam year to take some private time for themselves, and to be with family; students might like
to relax by going hiking, or by visiting local landmarks such as Kek Lok Si temple for its
wonderful displays of Chinese New Year celebrations at this time of year, or by visiting their
local temple or mosque or church for prayer and reflection; other students will find they get
their spiritual relaxation and guidance by taking a long walk along the beach, or perhaps by
playing more music than usual, organising a catch-up time with friends for some sport or other
interest, or simply by taking a whole day as their 'Personal Social Media Day' – a day of their
own choice.
Teachers are aware that for this upcoming Chinese New Year and 'Well-Being Week', some
revision and the completion of a few tasks related to coursework/internal assessment, that have
previously been set, are certainly a reasonable expectation to complete, but no new work
should be set or assigned to students, no extra revision questions, no past exam papers or
similar, as this will place students under additional pressure and they will not feel ‘fresh’
for the first week back at school.
Students, please find the right balance over this Chinese New Year period. Take care of
yourself and your well-being. We look forward to seeing you back at school, refreshed and
ready to engage wholeheartedly during the final months of your schooling in the lead up to
final exams.
Gong Xi Fa Cai.

Options Evenings
If parents could please make note of the following upcoming events.
On Tuesday, March 1st, we will host our Year 9 Options Evening for students entering the
IGCSE Programme next year in August. Following a brief presentation on aspects of the
programme, students and parents will have the opportunity to visit the various subject stalls,
meet the teachers and Heads of Department/Faculty, and find out more detail about the
IGCSE curriculum and assessment.
On Wednesday, March 9th, we will host our Year 11 Options Evening for students entering the
IB Diploma Programme next year in August. In the lead up to this evening, all Year 11 students
will be taking part in an introductory session to the IB Diploma on February 29th during their
PSHE Monday morning class. This session will be led by Mr Cartlidge, IB Diploma
Coordinator, Mr David Peake, HOY 12/13 and Mr Rose, Head of Curriculum. Following this
session, each Year 11 student will attend a five minute informal meeting with one of the above
staff members to discuss individual needs and pathways. The IB Options Evening will

Department/Faculty, and find out more detail about the IB Diploma curriculum and
assessment.
Please note that the IB Options Evening on March 9th has been scheduled to coincide with the
IB Diploma Art Exhibition. Parents and students are cordially invited to attend this event in the
lobby of F-block immediately following the IB Diploma curriculum event.

Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTCs)
Please note that, as a valuable part of the reflection process, Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTCs)
are scheduled for Thursday 18 February 2016 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. Please feel free to schedule
an appointment to meet with your child’s teachers at these conferences, together with your child.
If you have any concerns or questions, they can be raised during your appointment. Also, an
indicator on your student’s report will show if a teacher has signalled a request for an
appointment with you. Please do follow up with the individual teacher by making an
appointment with them. Parents can schedule an appointment via the link that Uplands will
send to you today, effective February 5nd, 2016.

Science week was held last week for KS3. It is an event to encourage students to enjoy Science,
arouse their interest in the subject and make connections to applications of Science in Society. If
your child is in KS3 please ask them if they enjoyed the activity they were involved in. The
activities were as follows.
Year 7: Making paper from grass.
Year 8: Various experiments using dry ice.
Year 9: Making rockets powered by a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen.

On January 22nd, Year 11 Geographers had a field work day to prepare them better for IGCSE
Paper 4. We walked between the Bayview Hotel and Rasa Sayang, (along the beach in the
morning and along the road in the afternoon) conducting different surveys and collecting a lot
of data. In spite of the long walk in the heat, the students were absolutely outstanding. They
worked exceptionally well as a team and produced some outstanding geography work. The
students were a credit to themselves and Uplands on the day and made it an enjoyable and
academically worthwhile experience. We want to compliment Year 11 Geographers on their
behaviour, attitude and commitment on the Geography IGCSE Fieldwork Day. We would also
like to thank Mr. Howe and Mr. Morris for accompanying us on this trip and for being a great
support and wonderful mentors. Overall, it was a great day of learning for all of us.

Pop Up History
Revolution came to the Streets of St Petersburg, or at
least the corridors of F block this week, as Year 9
students reconstructed the events of Bloody Sunday in
Russia in 1905.
As part of their study of the Russian revolution the
students used primary sources to analyse the problems
facing the Russian peasantry and working class. Using
that information they then wrote petitions, created
banners and slogans for a protest march to the Tsar’s
Winter Palace, pledging their loyalty but asking for
change.
After their protest march they returned to the
classroom and watched a short reconstruction of the
real events. Luckily they didn't share the same fate as
the real demonstrators, whose professed loyalty was
repaid by a volley of bullets that killed about two hundred of them.

Penang International Schools; Straits International School Penang, ISP@ Desa Park City, Sri Kdu
International School, Tenby International School Penang, Garden International School, Alice
Smith School and Prince of Wales International School.
It was a very successful exchange meeting. Teachers shared teaching resources, strategies, class

Drama Festival at Uplands…coming soon!
If you love Drama…
We are excited to announce a valuable opportunity for students to participate in the ISTA Middle School Festival, here in Penang.
There are limited places available and the Festival has already ‘sold out’ for overseas visitors! We now have 25 spaces available for our Uplands students.
The theme of our festival is ‘The Unknown’
The theme of our festival is ‘The Unknown’ Ernest Z’s Penang Street Art pops out from unexpected places,
surprising you as you walk. From the ordinary to the unusual, he brings the grey, worn walls of the streets to life with his quirky work. How can theatre make the ordinary extraordinary? How can we bring
a spirit of adventure to the mundane? How do we look again at our lives and see them afresh, making them new through art? This festival
will explore how theatre can make an audience think in new ways about things they have taken for granted or never even noticed.
The cost of this three day festival is RM 980, which includes an out-and-about trip to Georgetown, a festival t-shirt, student disco, all theatre workshops, lunches and snacks during the day, and two workshops with local theatre artists.
Please contact Alison Hurst Festival Coordinator for an application letter. Find me in F208 or email [email protected]

Uplands have been chosen to host a Middle School ISTA Festival this coming April 2016. Unlike FOBISIA events, we will be looking for families to host these students, and this is where your support would be greatly appreciated!
There will be approximately 85 students arriving from the following schools:
Bangkok Patana School
International School of Penang
French International School, Hong Kong
Mont' Kiara International School
Harrow International School Hong Kong
Overseas School of Colombo
We are looking for families to host two overseas students for 3 nights from Wednesday 20
April until Saturday 23 April.
This is a fantastic intercultural opportunity, for your child to make new friends from other international schools within the region.
If you are able to help as a host for this event, please contact Daniel Naidoo, our Uplands ISTA Student Housing/Hosting Coordinator on [email protected]

Thank you to everyone who contributed their time, effort and resources to raise money to buy
school bags for the Rohingya refugee children at Good Start. During Monday’s Primary
Assembly hosted by Year 2 the school bags were presented to James and Noorul from Good Start
by Mai Metcalfe and Polly Butterfield on behalf of the Primary School. Good Start now has 57
kindergarten-aged refugee children from Myanmar, with more wanting to come every day. They
get no funding other than from kind donations such as ours, so are enormously grateful for what
we have provided for their children. RM3,700 was raised in total with RM1,083 raised from the
bake sale held on the 17th and 18th of December. Several student and parent volunteers helped
out with this and we thank them for their great work. Generous donations were also made by
all of the other year groups. A great contribution guaranteed to benefit the refugee children at
Good Start!
Thank you members of UPTA and parent helpers for decorating the campus to celebrate the
Chinese New Year. We will all enjoy the Lion Dance and Ang Pow on Friday to celebrate the
beginning of the Year of the Monkey.

Science visit Students’ Comments
My favourite part of the lesson was watching the Styrofoam cup dissolve in the nail polish
remover. I liked the way the cup bubbled as it dissolved. I also liked watching the salt crystals
that dissolved really, really slowly, because that’s my favourite thing to do in the kitchen at
home when there is nothing going on. As there was a lot of activity around the science lab
today I was not as interested as I would have normally been.
(Wallace)
This afternoon Mr. White science teacher for the secondary school at uplands, brought us to the
school science lab. The room was fascinating. It looked like a real science lab, with test tubes,
science gadgets, fire made by gas, all sorts of chemicals and telescopes. We even had to wear
goggles! We looked like true scientists. I really enjoyed spending time at the lab and doing the
experiments. Would like to come back and do another experiment with Mr. White.
(Hugo)
There’s not much I would change about the visit except I wish that we got there on time
because during the first 4 or 5 minutes, “LOVELY” Mr. White had to rush us through it a bit so
we could have some time in the class to finish off our work. Even though it wasn’t that long I
still had fun.

An Interns Perspective
If Tom and Jerry were lucky enough to have access to trusted mediators, it is very likely they
would not still be fighting 300 episodes and eight movies later.
This famous duo may not have been that lucky, but Uplands certainly is. A group of eleven Year
12 students successfully completed their mediation training this week, and are ready to bring
their skills to the Uplands community.
The students have all undertaken 12 hours of training to reach this point.
Part of my psychology course at The University of Melbourne has enabled me to return to
Uplands as an intern, and one of the great experiences I have had is seeing the establishment of
the peer mediation programme. During the final assessment, the students demonstrated their
skills by undertaking various role plays with four members of staff (Mr. Butterfield, Ms. Owens,
Ms. Pearson, Ms. Sharpe) and myself.
The students successfully implemented their knowledge of the five step process of successful
mediation, and helped facilitate practical solutions. From my experience, I found all the students
were friendly and created a safe and comfortable environment. Though the role play was purely
fictional, I still felt I was listened to and respected when raising my concerns about the fictional
conflicts.
The skills taught by this programme are ones I believe to be extremely beneficial in all aspects of
life. I personally believe having mediators will be a positive addition to the pastoral care
programme at Uplands and I wish I was able to stay longer to fully see the effects of this service
take place!
A big congratulation to the new mediators:
Crystal Lee, Natalia Prendke, Bing Yi Lim, Keat Chong Cheng, Jasmin Dalsgaard, Jessica Fong,
Shihori Kawamura, Yoon A Kim, Ong Zhen Zin, Tamara Darbar and Stephanie Ooi.

Last week our Uplands Swim Team travelled to Phuket, Thailand, for the FOBISIA Swimming
Championships BISP 2016 from 28th to 31st January 2016. This meet showcases the very best
swimmers from across all International Schools, with some of the older swimmers having
already qualified for the Olympics ‘B’ cut this year!
Despite the fact that the team is small in numbers, they performed fabulously as they managed
to grab 13 Gold and 5 Silver medals. The most impressive display was our Year 9 student,
Yusuke Konno, who single-handedly contributed 8 gold medals to the team and has been
awarded the Best Boy in his age group. Saskia von Wehrden, Year 7, came runner-up in her
age group, while Cieran Wong, Year 8, came 3rd in his age group.
Overall, our squad produced a series of Personal Bests in their events. It was a long weekend
for them as they endured very hot weather and at the same time kept their focus on their
events. Every swimmer enjoyed themselves during the trip and gained a huge amount of
experience in competing at a very high level of swimming competition.
A special thanks goes to Mrs Konno for her effort and time accompanying the team. Finally, we
wish to thank the parents and the coaches for their continued support. Well done to all.

Uplands New Year Swim Meet, 23 January 2016
On the 23rd January our school hosted the 1st Uplands New Year Swim Meet. The meet featured
swimmers from St. Christopher’s International School and Tenby International School. With over
60 events contested, the competitive spirit shown by the swimmers in pushing themselves to their
limits was absolutely fantastic. There was a friendly atmosphere, and the highlight of the Meet
was the Boys and Girls Under 6 years where we saw some promising swims from the kids. With
more practice, they will surely be great assets to the team.

IB Options Evening
Parents! If your son or daughter is in Year 11, you should already be thinking about what is the
best ‘sixth form’ programme for your child. ‘A’ levels, the AP, the STPM and the IB Diploma
Programme (DP) all have their merits but we do believe that the IB DP at Uplands School is the
best preparation for both University and life outside our school.
On Wednesday 9th March at 6.00 pm there will be a special IB Diploma Information Evening
for parents of Year 11 pupils and anyone else who is interested. The purpose of the evening is
to inform you of the IB Diploma Programme at Uplands School.
The session will be led by Mr Andrew Cartlidge (IBDP Coordinator) and Mr Paul Rose (Head
of Curriculum) and will focus on the following:
The Diploma Programme/Courses: philosophy and framework
How the Programme is organized at our school
The Diploma/Courses and Higher Education after Year 13
We will spend some time next half term with our Year 11 students discussing their different
choices for Years 12 and 13, and they have already been given our IBDP handbook to look
through with you over the half term break. Do have a look at the handbook with your child
and a discussion over what courses your son or daughter might choose. If you have any
questions, come along to our IB Options Evening, or email / speak to me at the school

Events: Park Royal Hotel Coffee Morning
A big thank you to those of you who came along and participated in this week’s coffee
morning! It was certainly different, and from my prospective, highly enjoyable. The Chinese
Mums did a fantastic job in helping to create an atmosphere of high spirit for the Chinese New
Year celebrations, and I'm sure I speak on behalf of all those present when I say that the choir
was an absolute joy to listen to. Well organized Serena Liu.
Thanks also to Ida Poulsen (Malaysia Country Rep) and Roslynn Buchowski (Singapore
Country Rep) for their contributions on how CNY is celebrated in different parts of Asia. It's
nice to see more involvement from all parents alike. Please see photos from the event, below.
For the staff and parents who were unable to attend, we were also given a short presentation by
Mr Andy Cartlidge (IBDP coordinator) on the International Baccalaureate diploma course. This
was well received and we wish to thank Andy for making himself available to speak
individually to a number of parents after his talk. It was very much appreciated.
As mentioned in last week’s Newsletter, we followed through to hold a vote to decide on how
to spend our allocated MYR8500 budget for a school gift. The choice was either 1) a number of
all-weather digital cameras for student use, or (2) a high-end coffee machine for the staff
common room. The vote was unanimous, 2:1 in favour of the all-weather digital cameras -
sorry teachers :(
As an update from last week, we are pleased to inform members that Mr Bristow approved the
subsidy towards contributing for the CNY Lion Dance that took place in school today at
12.30pm. Thank you Uplands for your support towards UPTA events.
Xmas Fair
We are pleased to be able to confirm that we managed to raise RM4,732 from the Christmas Fair
last year toward our School gift fund and RM473 towards Charitable causes. Once again
special thanks goes to our tireless and selfless volunteers, country reps, and sponsors SANTA
FE, WALKER & JENSEN LANDSCAPING, CROWN and INTERMOVERS, who made this
event happen, thank you.
Clubs
Most of our Social and Sports clubs that are already back up and running this term will be
postponed next week for Chinese New Year half term. If in doubt please check with the club
