Gaines, director of undergraduate admissions; Janet Schneider (BA’73, MAT’76), director of college counseling at University School of Nashville; Walt (BA’80) and Lynn (BA’83) Kunau, current parents Applying to college is one of the most exciting and nerve-racking times for students and their parents. This panel of alumni and admissions officers will share firsthand knowledge about navigating the waters of today’s world of col-lege admissions. Co-sponsored by Parents and Family Pro-grams

2:30–4 p.m. NROTC Third Annual National Security Symposium Langford Auditorium General and Mrs. Richard B. Myers will be the keynote speaker at this year’s event, com-memorating the tenth anniversary of 9/11. As the then-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Myers was at the center of the Bush administration’s strategy of promoting democratic movements and human rights as one element of the U.S. war on terror. Mrs. Myers has been an advocate of women’s rights in the Middle East and elsewhere, and she will

discuss that aspect of the situation. Co-sponsored by Nashville’s Council of For-eign Relations

3-4 p.m. Wikipedia, WikiLeaks and Wiccans: Historical Accuracy Online Central Library Community Room Please join John Seigenthaler for this engaging talk about reading and the importance of li-braries in this new age of information. Seigen-thaler is the founder of the First Amendment Center, former president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and chairman emeritus of The Tennessean. An active writer and speaker, Seigenthaler hosts the weekly book program “A Word on Words with John Seigenthaler” on WNPT, Nashville Public Tele-vision, where he interviews noted novelists, journalists, historians, memoirists and others.

A strong advocate of first amendment rights of free expression, he also has been a nationally recognized critic of willfully false and mislead-ing online vandalism. His controversy with Wikipedia for posting anonymous, libelous statements led to that website’s revising its policies.

3:30–4:30 p.m. Vanderbilt Athletics Update with Vice Chancellor David Williams Sarratt Cinema Vanderbilt sports are reaching new heights and the future is bright. Nobody knows the program better than Vice Chancellor David Williams. He’ll give you an insider’s look at ev-erything from new head football coach James Franklin to the baseball team’s first appear-ance at the College World Series.

3:30–4:30 p.m. Getting In and Out of College: Policy, Geography, Institu-tions and Individuals Rand Function Room Stella M. Flores, assistant professor of public policy and higher education Race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status remain increasingly important factors in predicting the odds of college enrollment and completion in the U.S. in these early stages of the 21st century. However, does where you come from dictate where you end up on the educational ladder? The lecture will present emerging results on policy initiatives related to key curricular and demographic transforma-tions in select state colleges and universities. Of particular relevance is the role that precol-lege characteristics play in predicting college completion.
