We chopped all 140 acres of corn we had and are done with the harvest. We fi lled our bunker with about 2,000 tons. Our yield was down quite a bit, we probably averaged 14 ton an acre and our fi ve-year average is around 22 ton an acre. Our moisture varied from 60-74 percent. I dont think anything was black layered. We chopped Oct. 18-20 and were able to get it away without too much trouble. They are running full tilt on soybeans around here and are ranging from 30-55 bushels an acre and around 13-15 percent moisture. We just have to haul manure.
We combined a little corn and it was 21 percent. Ive been hearing the range for moisture on picking corn is anywhere from 18-31 pecent. I just started my organic soybeans today. I had to wait for the weeds to die. They are running around 35 bushels an acre. We have 180 acres of soybeans and 100 acres of corn left to harvest. There are still a lot of soybeans going out around here and there hasnt been much corn being taking out either.
Im still chopping corn and working on that when the corn is wet or there is a dew on. I brought the heifers and beef home from pastures. We are working up some neighboring CRP land. We mowed the hay and are plowing that now. All the crop is up; we fi nished the soybeans last Thursday and Friday (Oct. 16-17). It was lower bushels than normal, one fi eld was 5 bushels an acre, which is the worst we have ever had. I am grazing our cows on third crop now and that seems really nice. We are caught up with tillage except the CRP and the fi eld Im harvesting corn off of.
We fi nished high moisture corn on Saturday (Oct. 18) and it was running from 26-28 percent. We harvested about 2,200 bushels. We are getting ready to do tillage and hopefully, we can do corn stalks later this week. We are done with the harvesting and just have some manure to haul and tillage to do. The soybeans are done in the neighborhood and some guys here are starting to do dry corn.
We are doing high moisture corn. We are going to grind it and bag some. We plan to hold on to our dry corn and put it in a bag and sell it next year. We tried to combine some and it was still 20 percent. We have 100 acres of earlage done. We baled 400 bales of corn stalks and got them up nice. We use the cornstalks for bedding in our consignment building for fat cattle. We haul our own liquid and dry manure, and that will be coming up real quick.
We are chopping corn but are tearing up the fi elds. We fi lled two silos, but a week ago we got 1.5 inches of rain, and where there are dips in the fi eld, the water is standing. We got stuck tonight (Oct. 21). We have to fi nish two to three bags and fi ll a little silo yet. There is a lot of tonnage out there. Farmers had started on their soybeans before the rain, but that is at a standstill now as well. Usually 1.5 inches of rain isnt that big of a deal, but we were wet before. Everybody is getting their nerves worked.
We are done with soybeans. We fi nished them Friday night (Oct. 17) and we roasted them on Saturday, Oct. 18. The soybeans averaged around 50 bushels to the acre. Then we did an 8 x150 bag of high moisture corn last Thursday. We shelled 5,000 bushels of corn for the drying bin and had that done by Saturday. The corn moisture was 17-20 percent and was running 150-160 bushels an acre. We have 120 acres left. There is a lot of high moisture corn going out now. We have been chopping stacks the last two days. We make them with a Hesston stacker, and it makes good bedding.
We are done with soybeans. We fi nished at my place Oct. 13. We averaged 45-47 bushels to the acre. We were just too wet too early. We are fi lling the silos with high moisture corn now (Oct. 22). I think the corn is around 25 percent. This is the fi rst corn weve taken off any fi eld. We are hoping to do 75 corn stalk bales today (Oct. 22). I think they are coming to empty the Slurrystore later this week or early next week. My brothers and I have around 700 acres or corn to take out.
The soybeans are done. We fi nished them about a week and a half ago. We have two plots and the best was 69 bushels an acre, and the worst was 62 bushels an acre. Across the farm, the bin measure was in the mid 60s. We started high moisture and bin corn. We got the dryer going today. There are a lot of people doing soybeans and high moisture corn in the area. We planted winter wheat on Oct. 9-10, and then we had three inches of rain. The fi elds are soft but passable.
MATT ANDRING
St. Charles, MN(Olmsted Co.)115 cows, 700 acres
We havent combined any corn yet, since we are waiting for our custom guy. I sampled our wettest fi eld and the moisture was at 27 percent. We fi nished our soybeans on Saturday (Oct. 18) and they averaged around 50 bushels an acre. Our best fi eld was 68 bushels to the acre. We are waiting for the corn to get to 25 percent. We have quite a few neighbors that are taking out corn for grain right now. We plan to bale corn stalks tomorrow (Oct. 22). We put in a new bulk tank and thats what has taken up a lot of our time.
SOUTHEASTERN MINNESOTA
We just fi nished our Minnesota corn, and we completed our Iowa corn a week ago. The Minnesota corn was about 150-160 bushels to the acre and the Iowa corn was 200. The soybeans in the area are all cleaned up and ranged from 60-75 bushels an acre. The corn harvest is about a third done. Our corn was 24 on the dryer fi elds, and we took a lot out in the 30s as ground fi eld corn. The manure hauling is fast and furious. We are bringing our cattle in from pasture, we fatten out 3,500 beef.
