No doubt about it.” It is what waits beyond the rivalry showdown in the second week of districts that both teams are really striving for – and a poten- tial showdown with the No. 5 team in Class 1 Wellington-Napoleon – a district title game appear- ance. The Jays handed Wellington-Napoleon its only loss of the year, 42-34, Aug. 31 when the Tigers had the potential game- tying touchdown waived off due to a penalty as time expired. To get to that matchup, the Jays would have to knock off their rival for the second time and Wellington-Napoleon, a 68- 0 winner over Wentworth Military Academy last Friday night, would have to get by Lone Jack, which defeated St. Mary’s 54-24 last Friday. “Go to Wellington – I’m sure Wellington would like that,” Siler said. “District championship – it’d be awesome if we could get to that point, but we’ve got to get past the next one first. It’d be wonderful if we could.” Of course North Platte has other ideas about which Platte County team will be appearing in the dis- trict title game and thinks they will be a little more well prepared to face the Jays this time. “We were awful beat up and had a suspension or two that game and some kids were missing,” Brockhoff said. “We should be in a little better health. We just need to get off to a little better start, play hard and we’ll see what hap- pens.” It also helps that the Panthers seniors have that desire to get a little pay- back. “We’re gonna have Mitch (Adams) back this game, so that’s a big help,” Poepping said. “We just need to not get down on ourselves, play hard and I think we have a chance for sure.” Brockhoff said he would like to see his special teams play a little better this time around, and if they do, it could have a big impact on the game. “(We can’t) let them start inside our territory every time,” Brockhoff said. “Our special teams played pretty poorly. They had a lot of returns and started most of their drives well inside our 50, so that’s No. 1. We’ve got to do bet- ter special teams wise.” To get to Wednesday night’s match-up, both Bluejays, Panthers meet for second time with district championship spot at stake Volleyball season comes to a close CITIZEN STAFF REPORT The West Platte volleyball team had a disappointing end to its season last Saturday, but made school history as it hosted sectionals, advanced to the sectional champi- onship game and went 3-1 last week to finish the year 25- 7-1. The Lady Jays started off the week by beating rival North Platte for the fourth time this season in the second round of districts, 25-9 and 25-13, behind seven kills and 11 assists from Jana Hochard. Chloe Faris recorded eight digs and Jordan Bialek led West Platte with 13 assists. With a district title on the line against a St. Mary’s team the Lady Jays had split the season series with, they responded, taking the game and the district title in two games, 25-16 and 25-17. “The girls came out very focused though and played some of the best ball I have seen them play all season long,” head coach Amber Guthrie said. “This was so exciting for us to be able to send our great group of seniors out with a district championship.
