Working together to impact change.

To our Community:

Today, we celebrate the impact you have made in our community. As champions of United Way your generous contributions, service and tenacity were essential to the successes we saw in 2009. Last year, we placed more than 5,600 Chicagoans in new jobs, helped 3,400 local youths achieve their high school degree and made health care accessible for more than 113,400 people. Our volunteer efforts saved our partner agencies nearly half a million dollars. Even in these challenging economic times, your partnership with United Way has made our community stronger and for that we thank you.

Moving into 2010, our focus has not wavered. We continue to efficiently manage our resources in order to increase our impact in the community around income, education and health. In an environment in which state-funding for health and human service organizations continues to decline, we are implementing innovative ways to leverage your investment so we can make more meaningful and measurable differences in our community and strengthen the safety net of services in the Chicago region.

We are committed to expanding our impact, focusing on meeting targeted outcomes in income, education and health. In addition to our Financial Stability program we have also partnered with Chicago Career Tech, an initiative led by the City of Chicago to develop a corps of trained technology professionals who will help strengthen Chicago’s position as a national center for business. This partnership will place more than 500 professionals in local nonprofit and government agencies to complete approximately 200,000 service-learning hours within the next 12 months alone. Our Health and Wellness plan focuses on basic needs (food, shelter, and freedom from violence), access to mental, physical and social health services, and primary prevention of chronic disease through healthy eating and physical activity. In education, we are focused on preparing children up to five years old to learn before kindergarten, and helping youth transition to high school and stay on track to graduate. These are just some of the ways that we are working to create lasting change in Chicagoland.

If we all commit to connecting with one more company, one more leader or even one more student who will donate, volunteer and advocate MORE, then we will truly LIVE UNITED. We are giving 110% this year and we invite all of you to join us.

With great appreciation,

Laura Thrallpresident and ceounited way of metropolitan chicago
