AITKIN CO. SHERIFF REPORT I cannot tell you what a bright spot in my holiday you made when publish- ing the article by Rev. James Spellman. I thank you, and for that matter, I thank all your staff and advertisers for having the courage to bring, if even for a moment, Christ back into Christmas. Changes can be insidious things...very slow some- times. Not always BIG things, but little things more likely. You don’t always even notice chang- es, they are so little. Be- fore you know it, you are accepting whatever the change is - like everyone else. Thoughts, ideas and notions become reality - part of the culture. I really do not remember when ex- actly “Christmas vacation” became “winter break” or “Easter vacation” became “spring break.” I cannot even recall what year Mad- elyne O’Hare raised such a stink about God. I can’t remember when it became politically incorrect to say Jesus Christ...unless, of course, one were cursing. That has seemed accept- able for a long time. When did “...in God we trust” become unaccept- able for our coin. When exactly did one nation “un- der God” become a hotbed for controversy?! I don’t remember. I do remember when it was ADDED to our pledge of allegiance to the flag. Oh yes, we don’t really do that in schools any more either, do we? Change is slow. Cannot recall just when Santa replaced the Christ child as an object of wor- ship. And when did it be- come wrong to pray? Why do Christians and Jews “offend” everyone from atheists to Muslims, yet Christians and Jews are not allowed to be offended. Not politically correct. A lot of these changes have happened in my life- time, albeit ever so slowly. I shudder to think what may be ahead. In the meantime, what a bright spot. Cudos to you, your paper, your ad- vertisers and your writers. Cudos and may God bless you!! A very Merry Christ- mas to you and yours! Frayda Nitschke, Aitkin Christian READER RIBBETS I’ve read, then reread the Hopper’s details regard- ing the County Board’s “Slight O Hand” process in awarding the Aitkin Age a publishing contract for the year 2008. What a ruse! How does the County Auditor really fit in Here? And just why didn’t the Board Chair throw the whole thing out and start over with a fair set of understood ground rules? But then in the confusion, the Gemini Commissioners in a moment of abstract mental fatigue motioned, the rest is history. As remembered, the “Age” in times past did: 1) present the Board Minutes in Shotgun fashion. i.e. Several board meetings, weeks After the fact and in mini font print. 2) Their tunnel vision of primar- ily seeing and reporting Aitkin and McGregor! Sel- dom Hill City and Swatara, then usually in a negative light. 3) Rock’N’Rodney was given far more liberty (a free pass) to scatter his magical intellectual fiction than my Age supporting dollar allowed. 4) And now there is this recent slick business acumen which won them the font contract. That said, thanks to the Board’s effort, I won’t be renewing my subscription to the Age. Respectfully, Donald H. Kitzrow, Hill City
