COMMANDER’S MESSAGE
Greetings Patriots, Ladies, and Friends:
This will be the last letter before our summer
break as well as my final letter as Commander of the
Chapter. It has been a pleasure to have served this
great group, and have been a part of all that we have
accomplished. We have helped many veterans and
their families here in the Austin area, and reached
out to many of the communities in Central Texas.
Thanks to all of those of you that have taken the time
to make the Military Order of the Purple Heart and
Chapter 1919 visible to our State Legislators, State
and Local leaders. We have added over 13 new
members and transfers to our roster. The Ladies
Auxiliary has also increased its membership and
reached the century mark.
Our April meeting was held at a new location and
was well attended. We were able to get acquainted
and welcome our new members. Also attending our
meeting was Red, White, and Bike who presented
four new bicycles to Little Hero’s. That makes a
total of eighteen bicycles presented in the last two
months. This is only one of the many organizations
that we are working with during the year. April 11th
and 12th, we were present at departure and return of
sixty more World War II veterans, the oldest of
whom is 102. Honor Flight continues to provide this

free trip for WWII veterans who wish to go. If you
know of a WWII veteran who has not been able to
travel to D.C. and visit their Memorial, please get
in touch with Honor Flight Austin. Contact John
Burkhardt or Ernie Banasau to make arrangements.
Speaking of Honor Flight Austin, it will be the
main theme of this year’s annual picnic as well as
the swearing in of our new slate of officers for
2014/2015. This will take place at Harold and Rose
Weeden’s who have, once again, offered the use of
their lovely home and surroundings. We will honor
our WWII veteran’s. There will be military
equipment, entertainment, BBQ, and the drawing for
the quilt. You will not want to miss this, so plan on
being there on May 17th. Even though the 17th is our
last meeting until August when we will be
celebrating Purple Heart Day, there are still events
where we make our presence known. There are
Memorial Day ceremonies at locations all around
our area so please try to attend at least one of these
events. The Georgetown Memorial Day ceremony, at
9:00 a.m., guest speaker will be Texas State Senator
Charles Schwertner. This event includes wreath
placing and music by the 36th Infantry Division
Band of the Texas Army National Guard, held at
Georgetown-Williamson County Veterans Memorial
Plaza, in Sun City. We will try to give more
information by e-mail on locations as well as other
events as they come to our attention. It is important
that we have your e-mail address on file so we can
keep you better informed.
I hope that you all have a wonderful and safe
summer and thanks to all of you for your support,
and please continue to support the chapter and your
new commander, Scott (Big Sarge) Garrett.

Unit 1919 has more than 100

effort in this achievement. Let us keep
the momentum going. It is vitally
important to have the membership
applications available when the
opportunity arises to recruit someone.

in Denver, Colorado. Information
about the convention is in the Purple
Heart Magazine and this year you

It has been a privilege and a
pleasure to be the Unit President for
the last three years. I appreciate all
of the big and small things done by
the Patriots and Ladies which kept
things running smoothly. I will
continue to be involved as much as
possible and work toward increasing

have my gratitude, love, and respect.

TxDMV: Texas Department of Motor Vehicles has
recently added a number of specialty license plates. If
you are like me, when out in traffic you have been
noticing some of those new ones and wondering what’s
going on with that. Wonder no more, DMV has
recently posted a new internet webpage (that’s it on the
top line) showing each of the 372 Specialty License
Plate designs now available. 86 of those are in the
Military and Veteran Specialty Plates category, and of
those, 25 are design options for Disabled Veteran plates
Here is the one for a
Disabled Veteran who
is a Purple Heart
recipient. This image
and all the 371 other
specialty plate designs
are displayed on that
TxDMV posting and you will have to look it up for
yourself, there is too much there to be able to include it
in PATRIOT BULLETIN. Also, military and veterans
can consult http://txdmv.gov/motorists/for-our-troops
for other up to date information.
see TxDMV below http://txdmv.gov/motorists/license-plates/specialty-license-plates.

BILLIE J. CHARPIOT, Army, Vietnam ROBERT L. STRAUB, Army, Vietnam
PATRIOT STORY of JOHN PRICE: John’s feature
story was in the Feb 2004 issue of PATRIOT BULLETIN.
As with all the other patriot stories (there are nearly 100
of them now) it was included as a webpage on Chapter
1919’s website, making it available to anyone anywhere
who has an internet connection. See John’s WWII story
yourself at http://www.purpleheartaustin.org/price.htm.
It includes the account of his
B-17, the “Mary Jo,” being
shot down over Germany and,
it shows a photo of his crew
but he never had a picture of
the plane itself —at least not
until now. Thanks to Richard
Lewis of Elizabethtown,
Kentucky, who discovered
our story and has just sent this
photo of the “Mary Jo” and
three of her ground crew. It
was provided by a son of one of those three, so now John
has a copy for himself and this was too good not to share.

RETURN TO IWO JIMA ...Escorted by Honor Flight Austin’s Kory Ryan (who provided the photo) on their trip in March 2014…
Chapter 1919 Patriot, JESSE J. FARMER, was wounded on Iwo Jima on Feb 19, 1945, and he was on a hospital ship offshore six days later when the historic flag raising took place on the summit of Mt. Suribachi. Sixty-nine years and one month later Jess and four other WWII Marine veterans of that battle were among a group witnessing the flag being raised again in a ceremony on that site at the top of the mountain. Thanks to guardian, Kory Ryan, for the photo.
Jess Farmer’s father had died when he was a young boy and to provide for her two sons while living in Austin, his mother waited tables in the Hoffbrau Haus (steak house still in business on W 6th St.). Jess left school to help support them, among other jobs, for a time, he was a paperboy selling American-Statesman on Congress Avenue. DEPARTMENT OF TEXAS NEWS ...For Every MOPH Chapter & LAMOPH Unit…
FOR MOPH CHAPTERS
Patriots of the Great State of Texas,
The Department of Texas is in good
shape; we received SWR funds that
were distributed to the Chapters that
requested the funds. Purchases included
wheelchair back packs, picnic tables
and other items that assisted veterans
directly.
As I reported before, we have three (3)
major Dept fund raisers in the works.
1. A Seguin 10k relay run has been
authorized by the City; the time and
events are still in the planning phase.
2. A Department of Texas Fishing
Tourney is scheduled in South Padre
Island on September 20, 2014. Make
plans to get your boat ready, or your
team (4) per boat. Boats and guides
will be available on the Island.
3. A Texas State Veterans Arts and
Craft Fair is scheduled for October
10-12, 2014. Veteran artists will show
and sell their art work and get to meet
other veteran artists and the public.
We are asking two hundred ($200.)
from Chapters to assist the veterans
with a booth. Chapters participating
will share in the Department proceeds.
Texas Department Adjutant Bill
Crumlett is still waiting for articles and
pictures from around the State to post
on our website: www.mophtx.com.
Please visit the site and tell us what is
happening in your area. June
approaches quickly and I hope to see
all of you at our state convention.
Commander Bud Nettles is doing a
great job in organizing and coordinating
the agenda and banquet. Great job Bud!
Stay well and Happy Trails,
Tony Roman Commander Department of Texas, MOPH
FOR LAMOPH UNITS
Hello Ladies,
Congratulations to all the newly elected
Unit Presidents and other officers! I am
certain the Units of Texas continue to be in
good hands with eager and capable leaders.
As you prepare for the installation of
officers, remember to send a signed and
dated copy of your Installation Report to
National Secretary, Judy Fiddler. I would
appreciate it if you sent me a copy of your
Installation Report; however, a copy must
be sent to the National Secretary.
Do not wait until June to send your reports
to various National Officers. Early reports
will be appreciated since your information
must be compiled by June 30th in a report
for National Convention.
The Department of Texas Convention is
quickly approaching. It will be June 12-14,
2014 at Quality Inn and Suites, 4800 South
Street in Nacogdoches, Texas. Unit
Presidents please notify Trish Rosie (Junior
Vice President) if you have contributions
for Ways and Means, such as gift cards,
baskets, and new or gently used jewelry.
The LAMOPH National Convention is in
Denver, Colorado August 5-9, 2014. If you
are sending a delegate or delegates to the
convention, please submit the proper form
to the National Secretary by June 30th.
Texas is usually under-represented at
National Conventions. It would be
wonderful to have delegates who reflect
our level of membership.
Ladies, thanks for everything you do
for the Patriots and for keeping the
auxiliary active and relevant. Have a
delightful and amazing summer!
Yours in Patriotism,
Josephine

TAPS Patriot WALLACE E. “PETE” SNELSON, an Army, WWII
veteran died Saturday, April 26, 2014. He was born 91 years ago
into a pioneer farm and ranch family in Grandfalls, Texas. He was
one of six brothers, all of whom served in the military. Pete gradu-
ated from Grandfalls High School with the class of 1939, worked
the next year as news editor of the Grandfalls Gazette and then enrolled in
the Texas College of Mines in El Paso. He was called up for active duty in
April 1943. He was assigned to Company B, 324th Infantry Regiment, 44th
Infantry Division, and shipped to France with them. The division went into
the line in September 1944. Pete sustained serious shrapnel wounds from a
tree burst during German mortar shelling on November 13, 1944. After three
month’s hospitalization, he returned to duty. Because he had German lan-
guage training, he was reassigned as a Special Agent in the 307th Counter
Intelligence Detachment at 7th Army Headquarters in Paris for the remainder
of his time in service. He was discharged at Fort Bliss, Texas in March 1946.
He graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso, served on the faculty
there for six years, then was Vice President of Odessa College from 1952 to
1955. He founded and owned several businesses in West Texas and was
elected as State Representative from Midland in 1960. He was elected to the
Texas Senate in 1964 where he continued to serve with distinction for many
years. He chaired numerous committees including the Senate Education
Committee where he concentrated on legislation furthering higher education
and public education and he was especially proud of supporting legislation
of “Hazlewood Act” education benefits for Texas veterans. During his final
term in the legislature, Pete was Dean of the Texas Senate, and as Senate
President Pro Tempore, he was the Governor of Texas on December 4, 1971.
Patriot Wallace E. “Pete” Snelson joined MOPH during the early days after
Chapter 1919 was formed, he supported the chapter and regularly attended
meetings, especially favoring the informal luncheons in Georgetown. His
loss is keenly felt and he will be greatly missed.
