from the Principal APRIL 10 2013 Open letter to parents One of the inserts in todays newsletter is one of the hardest things I have ever had to write. It details information on a situation concerning a family that has close ties with our staff, school and wider community. Please take the time to read this as the Board felt that it was important to now ensure that everyone is aware of what is going on. Mythbusters iPad workshop Next Wednesday night - April 17th @ 7pm at school. The teaching team will be facilitating a workshop with you on iPads in our school. Why we have them, how we are using them and what we are doing with them. If you want to know more about how these tools are being integrated into our teaching and learning programmes then mark this evening in your calendar and come along. We will start off together with a presentation and discussion and then split into groups, each with a pair of teachers to share about what is happening at your child's teaching level with these tools. See you there! Inaugural school house swimming competition At the conclusion of our swimming programme next week we have managed to book the pool for an hour on Friday 19th April from 10-11am to run our first ever school house swimming competition. This gives all our students the chance to apply their learning from our swimming block into a competitive school event! Mark this day and time in your calendar - we only have the use of the main pools for an hour so it will be a short sharp sprint event. At the conclusion of the programme we then have time for everyone to have some free time in the leisure pool and on the water slide to celebrate the end of this programme and learning block. Please fill out the event entry form for your child/ren. Special thanks to Daniella de Garnham who works at Splash Palace for helping to organise this event. Milk for schools Our school has been invited to join the Fonterra Milk for Schools programme. This programme is all about growing healthy kids and milk contains essential nutrients for growth and development. The natural nutrition of milk gives kids calcium for building bones and nutrients they need for sustained energy, concentration and learning in the classroom. Participation in the programme is entirely voluntary – both for our school and students. Please complete and return the permission slips over the page for each of your children by Monday 15 April so we can confirm the number that wish to participate. It details information on a situation concerning a family that has close ties with our staff, school and wider community. Please take the time to read this as the Board felt that it was important to now ensure that everyone is aware of what is going on.

Week 10 Term 1

KAURI 8 (Mrs Polaschek)Welcome to Madeleine Black and her family, who joined us last week.  It has been great to see all our new learners quickly become such enthusiastic members of our learning community. What a wee bunch of fish we have in Kauri!  The children are keen swimmers, who are proud of the new things they are already learning at swimming lessons.  Some children are learning to be confident and comfortable putting their heads in the water, while others are learning to use their arms and to kick correctly.  A big thank you to the parents who come along to help, both in the pool and in the changing rooms.  You are really appreciated!

RIMU 3 (Mrs Godby)I hope everyone is enjoying the rain and you are all able to top up your water tanks. As swimming is now underway we will not be going to the library during school time. The children are able to go to the library during lunch time so if you have any library books at home it would be great if the children could bring these to school and change them over the week. We are moving into discussing fractions so if you are cutting things up or sharing things out you could talk about what fractions are involved it would be very helpful as it puts maths into an everyday context.

Regards Natalie.

Certificates: Abigail and Ollie

RATA 4 (Mrs Aurik)The children are really enjoying swimming lessons.  Here are some of our thoughts about swimming;  Scott is learning how to backstroke with no board. When he uses his arms water drips into his nose. He is making sure he doesn't bang his head at the end of the pool.  Jack is learning to keep kicking when he takes a breath. Aimee is learning to roll over in the water. The water sometimes goes up her nose.  Poppy is learning to do six kicks on her tummy and six kicks on her back.  It is tricky for her.   Have a great week.

MIRO 5 (Mrs Kahukura) Miro are really enjoying our swimming. It is fantastic to watch the confidence and skill level grow each day. A big thank you to all the parents for your help in the pool and changing area.• I am enjoying learning how to swim. Cody• I like learning how to do backstroke. Harley• We are swimming in our pyjamas to learn how swim with clothes on. Delta and Anneka.• I enjoy getting my hair wet. Fletcher.• I enjoy playing underwater, rock, paper, scissors with William. Timothy• I love being in a group with only girls in it. Grace• I like wearing my new togs in the water. Eilish

Remember togs every Mon-Thurs until the end of term and overdue library books returned asap.

Have a great week. Kiri

MANUKA 6 (Mrs Carr) We are well underway with our swimming sessions and already I can see significant progress in all our swimmers. It is so beneficial to have these consecutive days to build on and consolidate skills! Thank you also to the wonderful parent support in the water and out. Have a great week, Della Carr.

TOTARA 7 (Miss Duncan)It's fantastic to see the progress and confidence developing within our swimming groups. Well done students for showing Kotahitanga when outside of the school, and thank you to parents who are sending notes and emails to let me know you are taking your child from the pool after swimming.

We are recording our news this week so that students can view, reflect and give feedback on their oral presentations. The learning intention is to pause in appropriate places and look up at the audience  when reading aloud.  We are also learning about the 'Constitution Conversation'. You will start to see the adverts for this on TV by Bernice Mene and Pio. It is a forum about giving New Zealanders a change to share their aspirations  for their country and what matters most to them about how it is run. This is a follow on to our Census 2013 discussions and having a say in what matters.  Totara is on assembly this week. Miss Duncan

KOWHAI 2 (Mr Herring)One of our highlights from last week was a video we made that gave the Highlanders advice about how to work better as a team. We sent them the link on twitter and they posted our video on their facebook page. It's had nearly 200 views! You can see it on our facebook page, as well.

This week we're working hard to deepen our understanding of what builds up teams. We're posting our understanding on our portfolio pages in Ultranet. It's been really interesting to see how teams in the world, like the Steel and a Nascar Driver, uses team work strategies to succeed in what they do!

Aviary help for the holidays: If anyone is able to do a couple of trips to check seed and water during the holidays it would be really helpful. I am going away and not able to be on deck for the whole time. Thank you.Irene
