his most memorable and disturbing scenes take place on the many televisions the player

encountersontheirtravels.Mr.ScratchtakesoverTVtogoadAlandirectly,oftenthreateninghim

andhiswifeAliceandusuallytorturingoneofthe localresidents.Alanshelplesstostopthese

meetsupwiththeresistance,hispacifyingspeechesandpropagandagivingwaytothreatsand,

eventually,pleadingwithGordondirectly.Likeallgoodvillains,Breenseemstobelievehisactions

arejustified,thoughashisholdoverEarthweakenshesrevealedasacowardwhosultimately

discardedbyhismasters.Whilehesafairlystraightlacedantagonistcomparedtoothersonthis

list,DoctorBreenisaplausible,andthuschilling,portrayalofhowmanyrealworldleadersmight

behaveinsimilarcircumstances.

Makenomistake,the3DSrebirthofKid Icarus isaverychattygame indeed,andalmostevery

charactergetstheirshareofoneliners.Whilethenewlyrevived(andunexpectedlysultry)Medusa

is initially established as the villain of the piece, her antics are merely a distraction for the

wonderfullyhammyGodoftheUnderworldhimself,Hades.Hesanomnipresentcharacterfrom

themomentofhisreveal,whether itsmockingPitseffortstodefeathimorforgingagrudging

alliance to repel an unexpected alien invasion. Flamboyant and melodramatic, Hades flirty

personalityandpenchantforinsultingnicknamesbeliethedangerheposeswithasingleattack,

hedestroystheThreeSacredTreasurestheplayersspentalargeportionofthegamecollecting.

ItsthecombinationofcasualwhimsyandextremepowerthatmakeshimevocativeofDisneys

morerecentvillains(thoughhesnotasdownplayedasJamesWoodsHades)andhelpskeephis

character fromdescending intosilliness.EvenwhenheandPit faceofdirectly,helloftenstart

anotherroundofbanteronlytocuthimselfoffmidsentenceto launchadevastatingattack.

Hades also has the distinction of being one of the few villains who, having devoured the

unfortunatePit,continuestochatwithhimandeventhreatenstopunishhimfurtherby,er,letting

shamelessrehashofacityfromthepreviousgame,buttheSaintsvirtualincarcerationhasone

bigcomedicadvantage itallows forthepersistentpresenceof thegameschiefvillain,alien

overlordZinyak.HemightlooklikearefugeefromaDukeNukemgame,butZinyakdidntgettobe

headofanextraterrestrialempirewithoutanappreciationforthefinerthingsinlife.Culturedand

urbane,whenZinyaksnotbuttingheadswithTheBossof theSaints,hespresentinghisown

classicalmusicshow(including lengthyreadingsfromhisfavourite literature)orbuildingatime

machinesothathecankidnapJaneAusten.ItsafarcryfromhisoriginsasacheapgaghadEnter

theDominatrixbeenreleasedasSaintsRowIIIDLC,aswasoriginallyintended,Zinyakwouldhave

beenlittlemorethanacomicallyeasybossfight.Instead,hesthepersonificationofSaintsRows

evolutionasurprisinglylovablevillainforasurprisinglyloveablefranchise.

WhilesheprovidedanunnervingandimplacablevillainthroughoutthefirstSystemShock,many

fans point to SHODANs revival in System Shock 2 as being her finest performance. A

megalomaniacalAIcapableoftakingoverentireshipsorstarbases,SHODANspresence inthe

sequelisinitiallyhiddenfromtheplayer,althoughitmighthavecomeasmoreofasurprisehad

herfacenotbeenonthebox.SHODANhastwodistinguishingfeatures:herevidentsuperiority

complex,whichpeppersherhuman interactions withphrases likeinsectandspeck,andher

marvellouslydiscordantvoice.Despitehavingnophysicalexistencebeyondthetechnologyshecan

usurp,shesalwaysonhandtoberateandmocktheplayer,aswellasorchestratingmanyofthe

gamesevents.Thenotionofaroguecomputerwithdelusionsofgrandeurishardlynewtoeither

science fictionorvideogames,butSHODANspopularityhasendured.This is largely thanks to

someremarkablewritingcoupledwithexcellentsounddesignthatusessuddenshiftsinpitchor

singsong timing tomakeeven familiar sentencesengaging.Even ifyoudont shareSHODANs

beliefinherowndivinity,itseasytomissnothavingheraround.

NarratortellsyouthatStanleypickedtheleftdoor,sobeingtheinquisitivegamerthatyouare,you

naturallyheadrightjusttoseewhatwillhappen.Unfortunately,theNarratortakesthispersonally.

SometimestheNarratorisntavillainatall.Ifyoufollowhisstorylikehewants,hedoesnthaveto

be.Startimposingyourfreewilluponthenarrative,however,andthingshavethepotentialtoget

ugly.SometimestheNarratorwillscoldStanley;makeadifferentchoiceandhemightrecognise

youasanagentoffreewillandpleadwithyoudirectlytoleavehisstoryalone.Anothercascade

ofconsequencesmighthaveyoubothequallylostandbewildered,trappedinsomeoneelsestale.

Whicheverpathyoupick,though,theNarratorremainsutterlyhilariousbyturnsexasperated,

petulant,panicked,remorseful,confusedordownrighthomicidal.Youllshatterhisstoryoverand

overjust

to

hear

the

withering

scorn

as

he

picks

up

the

pieces.

Its

clear

from

the

chaos

your

choices

create,andtheinsistenceyouhaveonbreakingthingsrepeatedlyforyourownamusement,that

narcissisticGlaDOS.WhilesheclearlyowesahugedebttoHALandSHODANforherexistenceand

namealike,sheeffortlesslyovertookherprogenitorsinpopculturethankslargelytotheeffortsof

is

funny.

The

relationship

between

GLaDOS

and

Portals

mute

protagonist,Chell,spanstwogamesandissometimes(notunreasonably)comparedtoalovestory.

WhileshesaconstantpresenceinthetestchambersthatactasPortalstrainingwheels,GLaDOS

onlytrulyspeakstoyouwhenyouspectacularlyfailtodielikeshewantedforher,thefirstdate

andthebreakuphappenalmostsimultaneously. FromthatpointonGLaDOSisyourjiltedex,and

muchofthehumourinPortal2 isclassicromcommaterialtwopeoplewhohateeachother

beingforcedtoworktogether,onlywithmoreneurotoxin.Itsatwistthathelpskeepthehumour

freshuntiltheveryendhadGLaDOSbeenmerelyathreateningAI,theredhavebeenverylittle

roomtodevelopherfurther.Instead,oncestrippedofherpowerandturnedintoanexperiment

herself,GLaDOS

is

able

to

develop

as

acharacter,

lick

her

emotional

wounds

and

eventually

convinceherselfthatshesdumpingChellnottheotherwayaround.Whilemanyofthevillains

on this listexist tobedefeatedby theplayers actions,GLaDOS exists to be at least partially

redeemed,thoughthankfullysheremainsaselfserving,passiveaggressivepsychopath.Afterall,

everyonelovesagoodvillain.
