Clinton Community College Continuing Education Specialist Penny Plautz shared the college’s enthusiasm for the new facility. It closed through July 3 for the move and reopened July 6. A wandering black bear quickly attracted a crowd of spectators when he appeared along the Bellevue-Cascade Road west of town. He is believed to be a young male, perhaps 200 pounds. He did not exhibit fear as he was photographed and observed for a considerable length of time. Duane and Judy Hansen of Maquoketa celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 28 with a family dinner. Judy Haylock and Duane Hansen were married June 28, 1959, in the Elwood Methodist Church, Elwood. 20 YEARS AGO – 1999 The Clinton Engines Corp. property in Maquoketa may be given to the city for demolition and development as a new industrial site. City Manager Brian Wagner disclosed that he has been discussing with Clinton Engine officials the possibility of the 12-acre site at East Maple and South Clark streets being donated to the city. Eight golf clubs will be awarded to top golfers in the Maquoketa Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Challenge Day. Twenty area non-profit organizations have received grants totaling $196,082 from the Dubuque Racing Association, officials announced this week. Some of the area organizations receiving grants are Jackson County Public Hospital, Jackson County Historical Society, Andrew Fire Department, Bellevue Ambulance Service, Bellevue School Systems, Bellevue Fire Department, Bernard Elementary School and Rescue Unit. The Davenport Fire Department would carry out the training for Jackson County personnel for hazardous materials. The training can be funded at 75 cents per capita without a referendum. The Jackson County Board of Supervisors are willing to explore the funding for county fire personnel. In attendance were Maquoketa Fire Chief Mark Beck, Civil Defense Director Buddy Olsen, and Dan Zeimet. Mike Murphy of Maquoketa showed unique style in winning the toilet paper races with his partner Vicki Krantz at the Saturday Night Cruise in downtown Maquoketa. John Manson lines up his nostalgic Studebakers that he collects as a memory to the 1960’s. His pride and joy is a 1964 Studebaker Avanti. He owns four Studebakers and plans to buy two more. Ad: Spark up summer with ALDI savings. 8 ct. Hot Dog or Hamburger Buns 29¢; 20 oz. premium white bread 25¢; Chunk Light Tuna 6.5 oz. 55¢; and Tyson Chicken Leg Quarters fresh frozen 48¢/lb. 40 YEARS AGO – 1979 Jackson State Bank and Trust officials have announced a new drive-in banking facility will be started this summer on McKinsey Drive near the junction of West Platt and the Highway 61 bypass. Donald Van Hecke, 41, was pinned beneath a small Ford Tractor equipped with loader while working at his rural Emeline farm. Neighbors and Maquoketa Rescue Squad members freed the farmer and rushed him to the Jackson County Public Hospital. He sustained internal injuries when he was trapped between the seat, tractor frame and the ground. Paying more and more for gasoline is bad enough, but the next problem at the gas station may be figuring how much more. The pump may not be able to tell you – when gasoline starts costing more than 99.9 cents a gallon the nation’s gas pumps will be unable to start adding on so many pennies a gallon, or nickels and dimes. 50 YEARS AGO – 1969 Mark Schoenthaler, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Milo Schoenthaler of Maquoketa, hardly recognizes he was shot in the face on June 12. Only a bandage under his eye and a little numbness, along with a slug lodged in back of the neck, remain as a reminder of the accidental shooting a week and a half ago. Maquoketa will greet their tenth A.F.S. student during the first week in August 1969. Lucia (Lucy) Oviedo, who will be 18 in October, will be the foreign exchange student who will attend Maquoketa High School and will make her home with Mr. and Mrs. Randall Zirkelbach and family. The Extension Home Economics Committee met recently and formulated plans for a public tour to the Nordic Festival to be held in Decorah. 60 YEARS AGO – 1959 Ad: Big automobile races at Fairgrounds. The two-day event will feature some of the top drivers in the nation. The two-day event will conclude after the last race with fireworks. Ad: Meet the “Young Philadelphians” starring Paul Newman and Barbara Rush, from the shocking best seller about the angry young moderns of today. Fifty-five relatives and one guest were present at the annual Schmidt reunion held in Eagle Point Park in Clinton. Mrs. Sara Schmidt, 82, of Delmar, was the oldest member present and Kevin Rodriguez, 3 months old, of Davenport, was the youngest. 70 YEARS AGO – 1949 Walter Dolch, owner of the Morning Glory Pastry Shoppe, announced that he will present a cake for every home run the Bears players hit during the month of July. Plans for three big days and three big nights of celebrating at the annual Timber City American Legion July 4 celebration have been completed, Darwin Reichling, general chairman, announced. The gala event, slated for July 2-4 at Lakehurst, is sponsored by one of Iowa’s largest Legion posts, Timber City Post No. 75. Arthur Blunt has been appointed constable of Brandon Township; his headquarters will be in Emeline. 80 YEARS AGO – 1939 Lost Nation – The MGM motion picture corporation of Hollywood will send photographers to the Louis P. Wulf farm near here to film a news reel of the automatic airmail pickup device which was invented by Mr. Wulf. The device passed a practical test early last month. J. Ralph Magee, bishop of the newly created Des Moines area of the Methodist Church was welcomed when Methodists gathered at the First Methodist Church in Des Moines. Bishop Magee will be remembered by many local residents where his father was a Methodist pastor. Vern Hute and Ernest Teters plan to take an oxen team and covered wagon to the Iowa City Centennial celebration on July 2-4. They also will take the big steer recently purchased by Hute, which has been of great interest to many local residents. 90 YEARS AGO – 1929 More than 3 tons of butter in one day is the record of the Buckhorn creamery made on June 11 or 6,120 pounds to be exact. Nearly 5,000 pounds were made the following day. Some 48¢ was paid by the creamery for butterfat the first half of June. We understand that workmen have begun pouring concrete on Primary 61 south of Zwingle toward Maquoketa which means that it will be clear sailing from Davenport to Dubuque through the Timber City ere long. Legionnaires Attention: All members are requested to report at Lakehurst. Please bring hammers, saws and other carpenter tools. Please be on time. 100 YEARS AGO – 1919 The Jack Thompson home at Fulton was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon, the blaze originating from an oil stove. The stove was lighted and Mrs. Thompson stepped outside the house and before it was noticed the fire had got under good headway and little of the contents of the home was saved. It is stated that the Preston Mill has been sold. Herman Henneke, who has been conducting the mill for the past year or more, has sold it to Peter Fries who has purchased it for his son to operate. The chicken dinner given by the ladies of the Union Cemetery Association at the A. W. Kendall home on West Platt Street was attended by a large crowd who thoroughly enjoyed the most delicious dinner and the ladies netted a nice sum for their association.
