Founded to promote, educate, and encourage artistic excellence in watercolor painting among members and within the community.

Success and Failure

This month, I have been thinking a lot about success and failure in the life of an artist. Both are relative and temporary, and both are essential to growth and development as a practicing artist.

In thinking back on various paintings in my portfolio, I look at the ones that have either gone into the bin or those which have met with ho hum reaction by jurors, potential buyers, or social media viewers. In each case, I have, in retrospect, found areas in which improvement could have been made. Had I not done those paintings in the first place, I would have foregone the knowledge gained by each one. In some cases, let's say the ones where I thought the painting was great but it was rejected by a juror or got ho-hum reactions, I got an outside opinion by a trusted friend. In other cases, my own vision was clear enough, in hindsight, to see what was lacking. Finally, sometimes the painting was essentially good, but just not great.

President’s Message (continued) Cathleen Savage, President

In those cases, I try to think about how I might have improved my subject matter, composition, color palette, lighting, or other factors that may have taken it into the “great” category. I look at the work of artists I consider masters. I dream about future paintings. They are all winners, of course.

Success is certainly fleeting! But, we appreciate it when we can find it. Every time someone tells us they enjoy our work, or that a painting has provoked a response, that’s a win. Of course, acceptance into a juried show sure feels good. So does the sale of a painting. Many of us have aspirations of getting a piece accepted into a certain exhibition or of obtaining signature status in a particular group. Those goals keep us motivated to continue to improve our painting. And oh, how we do savor the sweetness when they are achieved!

So, happy painting! Hope to see you at the October meeting.

September Program:

The presentation and demo was given by Mary Morrison from Denver, who is a representative from Golden Artists Colors. She brought handouts and QOR paint samples from Golden. QOR stands for Quality of Results and their website is QORCOLORS.COM. The packet info was mostly about their acrylic paints, but included a color chart of their line of watercolors.

She demonstrated three new grounds from Golden which turn most surfaces into a watercolor or acrylic surface. Frisket or masking works on all three grounds. It is advisable to allow the grounds 24 hours to dry.

#1 Light Dimensional Ground provides a smooth surface and should only be applied with a palette knife. Only one coat is needed as it is very thick. It can be sanded with wet sanding to get rid of the ridges.

#2 Cold Press Ground is much rougher and is applied with a palette knife. A wet knife will smooth out the surface. You can add a small amount of acrylic paint to tint the ground.

#3 Watercolor Ground is called a "white out" for watercolors. It can be applied with a brush and works better on paper. You can also use it to correct a mistake on a painting in progress. You can apply with a roller for a uniform surface. Two coats are best and can also be applied with a soft synthetic brush.

MSA Mineral Spirit Varnish is recommended for sealing the completed watercolor paintings. Mary uses five coats of gloss and the final coat should be satin, semi-gloss or matte, depending on the preferred finish. She recommends to use six coats of varnish to seal a watercolor painting.

She also showed an example of an acrylic pour from Golden. A combination of watercolors and acrylic can be used to add more fun to your paintings. She demonstrated many variations of this technique.

If you have any questions or comments, her website is marymorrison.info.

Mary asked that everyone fill out a survey using the event code W46-221 online at goldenpaints.com/waldsurvey.

October Program:

Reveille Kennedy, Program Chair, has gotten our member, Cindy Welch, to do a watercolor demonstration.

Cindy Welch is a PPWS member living in Castle Rock. She has loved art all through her school years, which ultimately won her a full-tuition scholarship to Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design where she majored in Commercial Art. After graduation she worked at a Denver design studio, created architectural renderings for several home builders, and ran a successful freelance graphic design business.

Cindy started painting again with watercolor in 2010 just for fun and love of the medium. “I love the exciting surprises of watercolor, the mingling of colors, the mixing of water and paint, pouring, and masking. There’s always something new. My passion is color and making the image more exciting to the viewer with great color while still maintaining realism.” With a passion for photography as well, she loves to paint from her photographs of nature and says she "sees paintings everywhere." Cindy is known for her paintings of local scenery and historic buildings, although she finds inspiration in many subjects from flowers to reflective surfaces.

Her work is in many private collections including the Douglas County Veteran’s Foundation, Cherokee Ranch & Castle Foundation, and Castle Rock Bank. She

was published in Splash 17 and 20, and is an award winning member of the Colorado Watercolor Society, Pikes Peak Watercolor Society, and the Greater Castle Rock Art Guild.

You can see more of Cindy's art at CindyWelchDesign.com.

Gina T. Judy resides in Richmond, Ohio, and is a native of nearby Steubenville. She is Vice President of the Steubenville Art Association and the Southeastern Ohio Watermedia Society. She is also a member of several regional art groups, including six Pittsburgh, PA, art guilds and a member of many state watercolor societies including Pikes Peak Watercolor Society. Gina is a retired art teacher having taught K-12 for 30 years in Ohio and was recognized by her Ohio Art Education Association peers as a Region East Outstanding Art Educator. She received her BA in Art Education from Bethany College in West Virginia and her MA in Art Education from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. She is also a college-trained accomplished pianist and has been a church pianist for the past five years.

Gina has exhibited in twenty-one juried national and international exhibitions, including the 2019 PPWS International Watermedia, and has received numerous awards. She works in many mediums, but her love of

watercolor came from her college mentor, the late Wesley Wagner. She has attended workshops given by noted watercolorists Frank Webb, Gerald Brommer, Pat Dews, Jeannie McGuire and others. Gina also enjoys large-scale acrylic mural painting, having done the theatrical sets for the Richmond Edison High-School theater as a volunteer for nine years. She often serves as a local juror for student art competitive events.

Gina is proud of her recent accomplishments of receiving a First Place award in the Alaska Watercolor Society 45th Annual Juried Exhibition, and her painting, "Dreamscape," won First Place in the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society Member Show.

PPWS Meeting & Golden Demo by Mary Morrison - September 18, 2019

Cathleen Savage, President, conducted her first and well-attended September meeting at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Thanks to everyone who provided our salad bar social. Cathleen presented Nancy Neale Martin with a cake and an appreciation gift from the Board and Committees for the two years she served as President. Martha Lancaster was gracious to be our Acting Secretary taking the general meeting minutes. Randy Stiles from the Rotary Club spoke about the very successful Butterfly Project “Flight” held every year in which impressive sums are raised in support of art programs for our District 11 schools. He urged our members to participate in next year's call for entries.

Reveille Kennedy, Program Chair, introduced Mary Morrison, who is part of the Golden Working Artist Program. She handed out their products brochure and a sample of QOR watercolors. Mary demonstrated three new grounds from Golden, which turn most surfaces into a watercolor or acrylic surface: Light Dimensional Ground, Cold Press Ground and Watercolor Ground. She also recommended the use of

MSA Mineral Spirit Varnish for sealing a completed watercolor painting on these surfaces. It was a very interesting program, and Mary is a fun and very knowledgeable person. Thank you Mary Morrison!
