Helping businesses and organizations set themselves apart from the crowd

WHAT Your Message Is:Pathway #1The greatest actor in the world needs a script—and so do you. The only difference is that someone else writes the actor’s script, and you usually write your own. You will gain a tremendous feeling of security and confidence when you know you have a well-crafted message to share.

(even if you have struggled with them for years)

Overcoming your fear of public speaking is not as simple as deciding to stop being scared of it. Simply telling yourself that there is noth-ing to be afraid of doesn’t work either.

Even though you know that there are no lions out there, getting ready to eat you; you need the specific strategies and tools that I share with you in this valuable report to start on the path of public speaking poise and confidence.

Pathway #2Your well-crafted message will enable you to negotiate more successfully with your critical inner voice. You can ask it to change its role. Instead of undermining your

confidence, it can help you by turning its skill outwards.

Pathway #3When any criticism comes your

way, you can breathe deeply into your adult self, and ask your critical voice to assess the validity of other people’s judgments. Is there some-thing of value there, or is it just Sam Sniper going about his usual negative

assessments of what anyone else has to say?

10 Powerful Pathways to Overcome Your Public Speaking Fears

Pathway #5Prepare your notes so that you can actually read them easily. That means large print, clearly numbered points, and numbered pages (in case you drop them).

HOW You Present Your Message:Pathway #4Whether you speak or you sing, your body is your instrument. Tune it up for the occasion by getting adequate rest and lots of water; so that you are both rested and hydrated and at the top of your game before you start speaking.

Pathway #6Be sure to check into the room arrangements ahead of time. Is there a microphone? If so, be sure to test the mike levels when you arrive at the venue. How about a podium or rostrum where you can put your notes? Is the seating theater style or around tables (with people’s backs facing you)? And never, never, never agree to talk while people are eating a meal. You and your message will come in a distant third, after the food and the conversation.

ALLOW Yourself To Do It – by Getting Past Your Nerves and Fear:

Pathway #8When you know you have to give a presentation, stop running horror movies in your mind about everything bad that could happen. Change the channel and envision yourself doing very well. Call on past successes in any area of your life and focus on them.

Pathway #7Give your speech from an outline, not a script. Reading from text is a sure way to bore both yourself and your audience. However, do write out the following two sentences verbatim: your opening sentence and your closing sentence. You will not only have time to craft a powerful start and conclusion to your remarks, you will gain tremendous confidence from knowing exactly how to start and exactly how to end your speech (no matter what happens in the middle of it).

BONUS Pathway:Action breaks tension. Dance to your favorite tunes, do jumping jacks, move around the room. Any type of action that will get your body focusing on movement instead of on anxiety, will help you move past the fear and into positive action.

The What, How and Allow pathways that I have shared with you are a small taste of the information that I share in my From Speaking Fear to Fortune training system. There we go into great depth about each

Pathway #9When people get nervous, they tend to breathe more shallowly, which tends to make them even more nervous. Focus on breathing in slowly and deeply, and then breathing out slowly as well. Focusing on your breath, and on the importance of the message you want to share, takes the focus away from your nerves. (See Timothy Gallwey’s book The Inner Game of Tennis if you doubt the effectiveness of this strategy.)

Pathway #10When you feel nerves running amok and fear in your body, it helps to give your body an actual physical message that things are okay and you are safe. To do this, simply place your hand on your heart and breathe deeply and slowly as you do. This is something that can certainly be done in public; as many people do it instinctively, without knowing why, when they are upset or stressed. Choose to do it on purpose and it will send your body a message that it is safe and all is well.
