NDIS SUPPORTED SCHOOL TRANSPORT DISCUSSION PAPER OUT NOW

As the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is rolled out across Australia, stakeholder feedback is being sought to inform how supported school transport could work in the NDIS or whether current arrangements should be retained. Visit www.engage.dss.gov.au and click on

the NDIS Supported School Transport tab to have your say. To allow time for governments to consider the outcomes of the consultation process, the Queensland Government will continue to deliver school transport assistance for students

with disability until at least 31 December 2019.

SECONDARY SNAPSHOT Workshop: We were mesmerised with Marco this week when he was reciting poetry to us. He also gave us a little insight into his life, being a rugby league player and a police detective. His officer in charge was Wayne Bennett!!! He then had a career change and formalised his poetry writing, pub-lishing and public speaking. Congratulations students for being super active learners. Up coming events: We are looking forward to Faith visiting again this year. Please take note of our Week 11 activities. Students are being encouraged to continue with positive behaviour choices as we wind down this term. Design: Year 9 and 10 designing and constructing their design response to child and youth gun safety. They designed a gun safe that had all the ‘mod cons’ to prevent easy access to the weapons within.

SCHOOL CAPTAIN REPORT: This week, all the classes had a visit from poet, Marco Gliori. He shared funny poems and guided us through making our own poem. Every class had a good laugh at his stories and we all enjoyed his workshop. Thank you Marco Gliori for coming to Dirranbandi! Don’t forget to say cheese next week when you get your school photos taken! 2 more weeks of hard work until the school holidays arrive. Keep persisting in school work and come to school every day for the chance of your class group winning the End of Term prize! Have a fantastic week!

PREP-2 NEWS

Students from Prep to Year 2 showed how

sea-worthy their ships were after testing them

in some water .

Only a couple of modifications were needed for all of the

ships to pass the test.

Great work everyone!

FROM THE HOC This week the excitement continued. In classroom visits I have seen the following: All students met poet, Marco Gliori on Tuesday morning, getting to listen to

and engage with his performance poetry. There were giggles and beaming smiles all round as students (and staff) enjoyed the experience.

All students participated in a workshop with Marco, writing and performing poetry themselves. We thank Marco Gliori for his time and being able to provide our students with a thoroughly worthwhile experience. Students have already asked “when is he coming back?”

Prep-Year 2 students are LOVING their THRASS morning routine. They have surprised Mrs Cookson this week, commencing their THRASS routine without her. Congratulations P-2 on your knowledge of where pictures are on the THRASS chart without the visual cues, for knowing the phoneme boxes and for correct pronunciation of all 44 phonemes.

Year 3-4 students have been writing persuasive texts ensuring they contain a clear opinion that is expanded upon with valid reasons, which are backed up with examples.

Year 3-4 students have been working on their entries for the Farm Safety Calendar competition. What great thinkers with their messages and designs. I look forward to seeing the completed entries and hopefully, the work of Dirranbandi State School students in the published calendar!

Mack, Georgia P, Darcy and Caitlin all participated in the ICAS assessments for Spelling and/or Writing this week. Congratulations to all students on the effort they afforded the assessments.

I had two very special people (our Prep students) visit me on Thursday to share the writing they have been doing inde-pendently, using their phonemic awareness (ability to hear speech sounds), knowledge of phonics (letter-sound) relationships, and ability to use their ‘sight words’ in their writing. While visiting, they told me they had also learned the word ‘you’. Georgia wrote a new sentence using this word, and Zack was able to talk about the phonemes in his name and the letters used to rep-

resent them, and could also tell me why capital letters are used where they are. AMAZING Prep students!!!

Have you seen the new addition to our school front? Doesn’t it look great! Our 5 new school flags arrived this week. Keep your eyes peeled for the unveiling of 4 other flags for the school front. These flags feature our PBL expectations: Be Responsible; Be Respectful; Be an Active Learner; Be Safe. All visitors to our school and community will know what we are about at Dirranbandi P-10 State School. These flags will be at the front of our school each and every day (weather permitting) and can be moved to events we hold around our school and community. Our 6th flag, is our Ag Studies Team flag which you will see at community events where our Ag Studies Team is showcased. Over the past few weeks teaching staff have been supporting students to complete assessments to the best of their ability, marking student work and making judgements against the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standards, and writing report cards. It is anticipated that Report Cards will be sent home at the end of next week. These reports provide parents with information about how their child is achieving against the year level achievement standards as set out in the Australian Curriculum. They also inform parents of the level of effort and behaviour students apply in each learning area. Achievement, behaviour and effort are reported on through a rating which will be explained on the front of your child’s report card. The comments teacher have written, indicate to parents the amount of progress the student has made within the semester, information about effort and learning behaviours, as well as information about what the student can do to continue to move their achievement forward. All parents are encouraged to attend the PLP meetings at the beginning of next term, to discuss the reports and develop new learning goals for Term 3.
