on LinkedIn

1. Over Promoting Yourself
Don't turn every conversation back to your business or service.
People right through blatant self-promotion.
If your business is relevant to a conversation, by all means, Speak Up!

2. Making The Hard Sell
LinkedIn is social first, business second. The hard sell is a turnoff Promote your products and services on
your company page, instead of a personal account.

3. Spamming Contacts
Spamming your connections’ inboxes with “special offers” or events every week will backfire.
Be very selective in sending messages to your connection’s inboxes.
Never let a sales pitch be a first communication.
If you do, you’ll eventually find yourself with fewer connections.

4. Randomly Connecting
Send a quick note with each new invitation explaining why you want to connect.
You’re taking a chance if you don’t. If you try to friend too many people you
don’t know, you could be reported to LinkedIn as invitation spammer.

5. Unprofessional Profile
If you took your profile photo in the bathroom, or at a party, no one will take you seriously.
Even worse is a profile with no picture at all.
Profiles with incomplete work histories, no recommendations or endorsements are also suspect. Look professional!

6. Not Updating
If you don't update your profile and status on a regular basis, people will forget you exist.
It's a simple as that.

7. Being too cute
LinkedIn is not a place to get too cute in profile and work descriptions.
People search for specific work titles and skills on LinkedIn. I'm a content provider, not a content "guru," not a content "ninja."

8. Posting irrelevant content
While it is important to post information in your LinkedIn groups ...
It's more important to post Relevant Information.
Remember, a sustainable building group wants different information than a animal rescue group.

9. Adding contacts' email addresses to your marketing
lists Don't abuse your connections by adding
their email addresses to your marketing lists without permission.
That is a no-no. It also violates common email marketing
standards.

10. Improperly Asking For Professional Recommendations If someone hasn't worked with you, don't
ask for a professional recommendation. If you do, you're putting a connection in
a position to lie about their knowledge. Ask people who know your work to
recommend you.
