Filling Your Jar Since you are using clear jars, layerthe ingredients attractively. Plan theorder of filling the container to makeattractive contrasts of colors andtextures. If your ingredients don’tquite fill the jar, add extra nuts, chocolate chips or other candies thatare part of the recipe for a full to thetop look. Remember that finely ground itemslike sugar and flour will filter downthrough larger items like nuts andchocolate chips, so plan the mostfinely ground items for the bottomlayers of your sand art. Double check

Page 18: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

the size of jar you will require to holdall the ingredients. Wide mouth jarsare far easier to fill than the narrowmouth variety. One quart or one literjars fit most recipes, but you mayhave to pack them tightly. If you are adding dusty or crumblyproducts like cocoa, ground nuts orconfectioners' sugar, wipe the insideof the jar before adding otheringredients to keep it looking cleanand fresh. Pack each layer tightly to conservespace. Use a flat-bottomed utensil ora juice glass that fits through themouth of the jar to compress a layer

Page 19: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

before adding the next ingredient.

Page 20: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Ingredients Make sure you use the freshestingredients, and don’t scrimp byusing inferior quality products. Thesegift jars are meant to have a fairlylong shelf life, so it’s important to usefresh ingredients that will last. Tiny plastic zippered bags areinexpensive and available at thecandy or jewelry center of a craftshop. If you know your jar will besitting in storage for a while, usethese to package baking soda orbaking powder, as they lose theirpotency quickly. Tuck them in thecenter of the jar so they are hidden

Page 21: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

and don’t ruin your sand art design. Brown sugar hardens quickly.Package it in a plastic zipper bag orsmall plastic container, or make surethe recipient knows to use the mixwithin a few weeks, as it can becomerock hard. The brown sugar can bechiseled out, but that is probably notwhat you want your recipient to haveto do. Nuts do not have a long shelflife so be sure to purchase fresh nuts. If you are making up your jars aheadof time, just store them in a dry, cool, dark area and they should stayfresh. If you use fresh ingredients, the jars should be usable for up to six

Page 22: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

months.

Page 23: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Decorating Your Jars After you’ve packed the jars, it’s timefor decorating fun. Choose colors thatwill coordinate with the recipient’skitchen décor, or select colors tocelebrate the season. Scraps of patterned fabrics areinexpensive and you only need asmall square or two to cover your jarlid. Use pinking shears to make azigzag border for a country look. Ifyou use a loosely woven fabric, unravel the edges to create fringe fora shabby chic look. Two squares offabric, turned 90 degrees from eachother, gives a double punch of color.

Page 24: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Use a thin rubber band to secure thefabric in place on the lid. You cannow fuss with your fabric to get thepositioning just right before addingthe ribbon, which will cover therubber band. Use ribbon, twine or a leather cord totie around your jar lid. Natural orpaper raffia is also available at localcraft shops and available in manycolors. Use your pinking shears to cutnarrow strips of fabric to use as yourribbon, or use rickrack or lace to tieup your gift. You can also use bits of lace, rick

Page 25: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

rack or other festive trims andbuttons to add texture and color.Your glue stick is your friend and it’seasy to add fun embellishments togive your gift a designer look. Doublesided tape can also easily adhereyour trim to the container. Add custom labels, hang tags andrecipe cards to your gifts. You cancustomize them with personalmessages, or create generic tagsthat can be used for any occasion.Use a hole punch to make a hole tohang your tag with string or ribbon.

Page 26: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Other Fun Filled Containers There are lots of other options fordecorative gift containers. Use aheavy duty plastic freezer bag to holdall the ingredients, and pop them in adecorative tin container or cookie jar.Bundle the bag up in colorfulcellophane and tie with a bow. Add itto a basket lined with a kitchentowel. You can also sew a clothdrawstring bag in holiday fabric tohold your gift, and tie it up with a bitof holly and your hanging gift tag.Jars are heavy for mailing, so theplastic freezer bag is a greatalternative for sending cookie mix torelatives.

Page 27: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Get the kids involved. Buyinexpensive cardboard gift containersat a local craft shop, or save liddedoatmeal containers. Let the childrenpaint and decoupage the outside ofthe gift boxes, then fill with a baggedmix. You can add your own label andrecipe card to their masterpiece. For a new bride or a young personsetting up their first kitchen, placeyour cellophane, ribbon decoratedgift in a great mixing bowl. Add awooden spoon with a bow tocomplete the gift. To make acomplete baking set, include a cookiesheet, timer, measuring cup and

Page 28: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

spoons. Tie a set of cookie cutters with aribbon, and attach it to a sugarcookie mix jar. For a family gift, wrapyour cookie mix jar in a kitchen towelto protect the glass. Place it in afestive new cookie jar. Mom willappreciate the new canister andtowel, while the kids enjoy the freshbaked cookies. Other ideas for cookie gift jars mightinclude pairing cookie mix and cocoamix jars in a basket with a small bagof mini-marshmallows. Add a familyfavorite DVD movie for a perfectevening at home gift.

Page 29: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Dip the bowl ends of plastic spoonsin melted chocolate. Scatter withcolored sugar or candy sprinkles, andtie up one or two in a piece ofcellophane. Attach to a gift jar ofcocoa or flavored coffee mix with adecorative ribbon. Another taste treat to add to abeverage mix is homemade biscotti.Dip one end in melted chocolatechips or chocolate bark. Other Recipe In A Jar Uses Recipes in a jar are great items forfund raising. Use them for silentauctions, raffles, church bazaars andcraft shows. If your child’s school has a Santa’sStore for students to buy gifts fortheir parents and relatives, recipes ina jar are great ideas for kids topurchase as Christmas gifts. Jars that are being sold should havegeneric gift tags and labels so thegiver can personalize them. These ready-to-use jars also make

Page 32: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Hints And Tips Fill jars to the top to eliminate asmuch air as possible and to avoid thepossibility of disturbing the layerswhen the jar is moved. If the ingredients are packaged in aplastic bag, squeeze out as much airas possible before sealing it. This willhelp to keep the contents fresh. Place the finest ground ingredients atthe bottom of the jar. This includesitems like sugar, flour and powderedsugar. If placed above coarse itemslike nuts or chocolate chips they will

Page 36: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

seep down through the layers, andyour gift will not retain its sand artlook. Store gift jars in a cool, dark and dryarea. The ingredients will remainusable up to six months, provided theingredients are fresh. Placing the jarfor display on a sunny windowsill orcounter will significantly reduce theshelf life of your mix. You should package baking powderand baking soda separately in sealedbags to ensure freshness, if the jarwill not be used right away. Mark your gift with the giving date.

Page 37: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

The recipient won’t have to worryabout the ingredients becoming staleif they know the date the jaroriginated.

Putting the Jars Together STEP BY STEP

Page 39: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Fabric Top I like using 2 pieces of fabric on thetop of quart jars, but just one piecealso works nicely. I use from a 6”square to a 9” square. Use a 6 or 61/2” square or even smaller if youwant the top layer in your jar to beviewable. I even use a 6” square forthe smaller half-pint jars. In thecover photo, the red and greendotted fabrics are 6” squares. Onesquare in the red dotted fabric, onein the green dotted fabric, placed atangles to each other. The M&M’s®layer shows up nicely with theshorter fabric.

Page 40: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

The red dot fabric on the cover is a 61/2” square. The red dot fabriccombined with the white fabric hangnice but farther from the top of thejar by being just 1/2” longer. The brown and teal fabrics on thecover are 9” squares. They create amore dramatic cover on the top ofthe jar. This longer top dresses upthe jar when you don’t have anythingespecially colorful to show off in thejar (like M&M’s®) or when the wholejar is mixed up anyway, as with someof the snacks.

Page 41: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars
Page 42: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars
Page 43: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Ribbon and Decorative Trim I use a thin rubber band about 3”long around the top of the jar overthe fabric before adding the ribbon ortrim. The thin, loose rubber band willallow the fabric to be manipulatedand straightened before applying thetrim, yet hold the fabric in place. Thin ribbons work best, but if theyare too thin, the rubber band mayshow through. 3/8” ribbon is what Iuse on most of the jars. 1/8”decorative trim does look pretty butmay show some of the rubber band.Use approximately 30 inches ofribbon for each top.

Page 44: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Thin lengths of jute also look cute, especially on homespun fabrics.Raffia is another medium that can beused for the bow. Some jars in this book do not actuallyhave fabric adorning the top, but justhave decorative trim wound aroundthe lid. Double sided tape worksgreat for holding the trim in place ifjust a few pieces of tape are placedon the jar lid rim before winding thetrim around. All the ribbons, trim and fabrics usedin this book are available at eitherHobby Lobby stores or Joann fabric

stores.

There’s a large variety holiday labels, everyday labels and recipe cards. Also the finished jars are availablefor viewing on the web page in color. If you have a first generation Kindlelike I do, that displays in black andwhite, you will want to move to acomputer to view the colorful labelsand jars. Ideas for attaching the recipe cardsto the jars:

- Attach the recipe card to thejar’s fabric or ribbon with a

Page 48: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

safety pin.- Punch a hole in the recipe card

and tie it to the jar’s ribbon withjute or ribbon.

- Roll the recipe card up like ascroll and tie it with jute orribbon.

- If the recipe is short andsweet, just print out the smalllabel with the recipe and stick itto the back of the jar. I havemade labels just for thatpurpose when the recipe isbrief.

Visual Jar Filling Putting the ingredients in a jar: Supplies that are not necessary butmake jarring a whole lot easier if youare making more than one or twojars are:- canning funnel- bean masher or other utensil that isflat on the bottom with a handle The canning jars are available atWalmart and canning funnels arestocked by the jars. Approximately 4 3/4 cups will fit in aquart jar if it is packed tightly and 4

Page 52: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

cups if it cannot be packed as withnuts. 2 cups of snacks (unpacked)will fit in a pint jar. Here are the basic steps you will gothrough in filling a jar. These are the

Holiday Cranberry Cookies:

Page 53: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars
Page 54: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Start by placing the funnel over thejar.

Page 55: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars
Page 56: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Next the flour mixture is usuallyadded. It is the messiest layer and

the flour will seep through any otherlayer (like raisins) that you cannotpack tightly, so I normally place it

first in the jar.

Page 57: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars
Page 58: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Pack the flour mixture with the beanmasher. The flour may make a messon the inside of the jar and if it does,

after packing the flour, just use apaper towel and clean the inside of

the jar.

Page 59: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars
Page 60: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Next a packable layer like the brownsugar is nice to add. It keeps theflour where it is supposed to be in

the jar.

Page 61: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars
Page 62: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Now pack the brown sugar firmly.

Page 63: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars
Page 64: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

My bean masher actually has ascalloped pattern on the edge and

sometimes I get that cute pattern onthe brown sugar edge.

Page 65: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars
Page 66: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Next I added the white sugar.

Page 67: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars
Page 68: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Pack the sugar layer firmly. Justpack each layer as you go unless thelayer is an ingredient like chocolatechips. Even the chip layer can bepushed down lightly.

Page 69: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars
Page 70: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Dried cranberries are added next. They can be packed a little, but don’tpack too hard. You don’t wantcranberry juice in the jar.

Page 71: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

Last in this recipe to add are vanillachips. They will sit loosely on top ofeverything else in the jar. It is smart

Page 72: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

to put nuts, chips or fruit as the finallayer, in case your packing was notas firm as you thought and you runout of room. You can always put justa little less of those ingredients inthe jar or add more if you have theroom.

Page 73: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

And voilà, the final jar is ready forsealing and decorating. For sealing, just be sure the metal lid is clean,

Page 74: 100 Easy Recipes in Jars

especially the rubber coating alongthe edge. Clean the top rim of the jarbefore placing the lid on, then addthe ring and tighten. This is notactually a sealing process as incanning but will keep youringredients fresh for quite a while.
