100 YEARS’ WAR (1) MIt changed historyFought between England and France (1337-

1453)Introduced new weapons and tactics that

marked end of medieval warfare, chivalry, and the medieval knight.

Marked beginning of French Nationalism with the rise and fall of Joan of Arc, a French icon.

Split into 3 main phases: the Edwardian War (1340-1360), the Caroline War (1369-1389), and the Lancastrian War (1415-1435)

100 YEARS’ WAR CONT.(1) M

Saw the introduction of the English Longbow into warfare. It was easier to train an archer than a knight. Availability of archers brought about the development of a paid standing army. The English first tried their longbows during the Battle of Crecy (1347), which was a disaster for the French.

Had unexpected effect of bringing madness into the English Royal family. Henry VI’s inability to rule brought about the loss of the Hundred Years’ War as well as the onset of the English War of the Roses.

Joan of Arc played crucial role in the French’s Victory. Captured by the British and her death by the stake galvanized the French, who expelled the British from the continent by 1453.

The Hundred Years War was paused due to the Black Death that struck Europe in 1348, stopping the war for 8 years. One third of Europe’s population lost.

France.One night, had a vision from god/angels to ‘

save France ‘ from its horrible condition.( Must go to a different village to go help

King Charles the seventh ) Everyone in her village tried to persuade her

not to , but it was all in vain.

stopped doubting her mission ‘ from god ‘People even started helping her ( wealthy

people )

King Charles the seventh welcomed her warmly

The same time she arrived to King Charles, the French army was leaving to Orleans.

her vision, she led the French army to Orleans to confront the English army.

Joan of Arc led the army to victory.

Immediately after they had won the war, King Charles the seventh was crowned.

Shortly after that Joan of Arc was captured

The Edwardian War(3)YIn 1337 , Phillip VI revoked some of Edward 3rds

land and began raiding the English coast .In response , Edward reasserted his claims to the

French throne and began allying with French enemies.

In 1340 , he won a decisive battle at Sluys(channel)*

Now that his confidence was high after winning the battle of Sluys, Edward advanced his army and continued capturing French land like Caen.

Advancing North, he crushed the French in the battle of Crecy and captured more French land.

After the Black Death passed , England continued the attacks on the French and defeated the French at the battle of Foitiers.

The Edwardian War ended with the treaty of Bretigny.

The Caroline War(3)YFive years later when Charles V was

crowned , he worked hard to renew the French army and renewed the conflict .

Taking full advantage of England , Charles immediately took back large chunks of land while at the same time avoiding battles with the English.

THE CAROLINE WAR CONT.(3)Y

In 1377 , Edward opened peace negotiations but died before they would conclude

After his death, he was followed by Charles the mad.

When Charles V died, he was followed by King Richard II.

France and England agreed to peace with the Treaty of Leulinghem

The Lancastrian War(3)MThe years after the peace saw turmoil in

both countries as Richard II was deposed by Henry IV in 1399 and Charles VI was plagued by mental illness.

The war was renewed by Henry V in 1415 when an English army landed and captured Harfleur(French Land).

Henry continued to invade France and had a crushing victory at the battle of Agincourt.

Over the next few years Henry captured much of Northern France

Meeting with Charles in 1420, Henry agreed to the Treaty of Troyes by which he agreed to marry the French king's daughter and have his heirs inherit the French throne.

How the 100 Years War ended(1)MAfter the death of Joan of Arc, the French

were extremely devastated.

In fact, after the death of Joan of Arc, the French were fed up with the English and expelled them off the continent ( except for Calais ), which was the very last piece of land that the English had.
