UPDATE OF THE FRONT OF THE CHURCH
OLDP updates Recently we were blessed to have a stone garden bench donated to our Parish, by one of our Parishioners, which I had installed in front of the Our Lady of Divine Providence statue. Thank you to our parishioner for the donation of the bench. I think it makes a nice addition.
Also, I have ordered a St. Joseph Statue for our Adoration Chapel. It is a statue with St. Joseph carrying Jesus. I realized that we didn’t have a St. Joseph statue in the Adoration Chapel and the one in the Church is St. Joseph the Worker not a statue with Jesus. In the past, for Fa-ther’s Day, we had moved our St. Joseph the Worker statue into the Sanctuary but I thought that a
statue with Joseph carrying Jesus would be more appropriate.
Once the statue arrives we will keep it in the Adoration Chapel and bring it out in June, as we do with Mary’s statue in May, displaying each statue in the Main Church Sanctuary.
The cost of the St. Joseph Statue will be about $400.00. If anyone would like to make a donation toward the cost of the statue as a memorial or in thanksgiving, please contact the Church Office: 466-4511.
On Wednesday, July 3rd, I will be celebrating the 9th Anniversary of my assignment to OLDP as Pastor. That means that I will begin my 10th year on July 4th!
Some have asked when my Art Show and Auction will be. Some thought they missed it, since it has been ei-ther the last week of May or the first week of June in the past. Because it has been difficult for many to come in June, with vacations, graduation, and other events, I have decided to move the Art Show and Auction to October. If anyone is interested in helping plan the next Art Show and Auction, please contact me at the Church Office, this includes those who have helped with the Art Show in the past. We want this one to be even better than the past and so we need some ideas. Thank you.
God bless you, Fr. Mike

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
CHRISTIAN FREEDOM Today’s second reading from the letter to the Galatians focuses on freedom. Freedom can mean different things to different people. We pride ourselves in this country on the fact that we enjoy freedom, which is guaranteed by our con-stitution. To be free, to some people, means that they may do whatever they please. Through baptism, Christians live in the freedom of the children of God. It is the way we use this freedom that is at the heart of the scriptures we hear
today. What is central to true Christian freedom is found in today’s second reading. There, Saint Paul writes that “the whole law is fulfilled in one statement, namely, You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Galatians 5:14). Freedom, in the Christian sense, has a forward-looking thrust. It is true that in baptism we are freed from sin, but there is also freedom for something. And that something is love of neighbor.
HOW DO WE SPEND OUR FREE TIME?
The first reading and Gospel for today tell stories about people who want to dwell in the past. Chris-tian freedom means that, once the past is taken care of, we move forward toward a future where we can use our freedom to love our neighbors. Too often we are barraged with advertising that tries to tell us exactly how to use our freedom. We should be spending our free time in shopping malls. We should be freely spending our money on SUVs, boats, larger and larger homes, and the biggest-screen TV. We should be spending our leisure time traveling to exotic places. Christian freedom means something quite distinct from these values, espoused by so many in our society. Today the scriptures call us to use our freedom to make this world a better place for the poor and needy. Today is one of those days when the Christian message is clear, con-cise, and quite easy to grasp. Putting this into practice is the challenging part for all of us. YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! Dear Friends, Our newest Parishioners, Dan and Kristy Mar-shall, who came into the Church at Easter here at OLDP, are in need of assistance. Both are blind and living at Metairie Manor on Transcon-tinental. They would like to come, regularly, to the 10:00 a.m. Mass, but to do so would mean having some assistance to help them with transportation.
They may also, occasionally, need assistance with doctor visits, too.
If several people could work out a schedule to assist them that would be wonderful.
They do not want to be an undue burden on an-yone so if more than one person, or group, could assist them that might make it a lot easi-er.
If you can help, please call Dan at (225) 892-7055 or Kristy at (504) 906-5765
Thank you, Fr. Mike
Next weekend, July 6 & 7 The Parish Activity Committee
will be serving Apple Pie & Ice Cream
after all Masses in celebration of the 4th of July
