    II- BODY

    STAGE #1 CHARACTERISTICS AND DESCRIPTION OF THEM203A1 GRENADE LAUNCHER

    1. Introduction to the stage

    The M203A1 grenade launcher is a single shot support weapon that can fire 40 mm high explosive(HE) grenades, a variety of training and practice grenades, and a full range of pyrotechnical,signal and smoke rounds.

    The M203A1 grenade launcher provides section commanders with immediate fire support and fillsthe gap between hand grenades and indirect fire support weapons.

    2. Presentation/Development of TPs

    a. Characteristics of the M203A1 grenade launcher(explain)

    (1) The M203A1 grenade launcher is a single shot, breachloaded, pump action, shoulder fired weapon;

    (2) its weight varies between 1.85 kg and 2.15 kg; Slide # 1

    (3) It is fitted with a leaf sight graduated from 100 metres to 350metres in 50 metre increments;

    Slide # 2

    (4) is effective against point targets up to 150 metres and areatargets out to 400 metres;

    Slide # 3

    (5) fires a variety of 40mm x 46mm low velocity ammunition;

    (6) can be fired from all conventional firing positions;

    (7) has an effective casualty producing radius of 5 metres.

    b. Description

    The M203A1 40 mm grenade launcher is a lightweight, universalmounting, quick detachable weapon that attaches to the C7 assaultrifle. It consists of the following major components:

    (1) Barrel assembly

    (a) The barrel is made from aluminium alloy 22.86 cm (9in) long. It has a bore with six bands that create rifling

    with a twist rate of 121.92 cm (48 in)that

    causes theround to rotate to the right at 3750 revolutions perminute at barrel exit;

    (b) the barrel extension is steel;

    (c) the handgrip is plastic;

    (d) two cartridge retainers are located inside the handgripat the end of the breach;

    (e) a cartridge positioning pin, spring mounted and

    housed in the extension, pushes the cartridge againstthe rim of the breech.

    (2) Receiver assembly

    (a) The barrel stop is located on the left side of the rifle. Itbolts the barrel and the receiver assembly;

    (b) the barrel latch is located forward of the barrel stopand holds the barrel assembly together in operation;

    (c) the extractor keeps the spent cartridge seated against

    the receiver until it is clear of the barrel;

    (d) the spring loaded ejector pushes spent cartridgecases and live rounds off the breech face;

    (e) the trigger guard protects the trigger;

    (f) the safety is located just forward of the trigger, insidethe trigger guard, and must be manually placed in theup (SAFE) or down (FIRE) position;

    (g) the striker is spring activated and is housed inside the

    receiver assembly.

    (3) Mount adapter assembly

    This assembly comprises the following parts:

    (a) mount adapter;

    (b) front securing loop;

    (c) mount retaining pin;

    (d) modified plastic handguard.

    (4) Graduated leaf sight assembly

    (a) The grenade launcher is fitted with a leaf sightassembly that is interchangeable for left or righthanded firers;

    (b) the leaf sight is graduated from 100 metres to 350metres, in 50 metre increments.

    STAGE #1 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

    1. Introduction to the stage

    In this part of the lesson we are going to look at the safety precautions.

    2. Presentation/Development of TPs.

    a. Safety precautions

    NOTE TO THE INSTRUCTOR

    Explain and demonstrate the order.

    (1) On the order "FOR INSPECTION, CLEAR WEAPON":

    (a) adopt the standing load position, as you have beentaught;

    (b) hold the GL M203A1 with the right hand on the pistolgrip of the rifle and the left hand in an underhandgrasp of the barrel assembly handguard;

    (c) the left foot will be advanced one pace, the muzzle ofthe weapon should be at an angle of approximately1000 mils;

    (d) proceed with the C7 rifle safety drill until the cockinghandle is fully forward;

    (e) with the left hand underneath the handguard, depress

    the barrel latch and slide the barrel fully forward,taking care not to strike the barrel stop;

    (f) tilt the weapon to the left and inspect the chambers tocheck that they are clear. Check with your finger if it isdark or the light is bad.

    (2) The instructor will show his own weapon to a soldier in theclass to prove that it is clear, and then inspect the weaponsof the class to ensure that they are also clear.

    (3) At the statement "CLEARED":

    (a) close the barrel;

    (b) press the trigger of the grenade launcher;

    (c) continue the C7 rifle safety drills, as you have beentaught;

    (d) ground the weapon, with the front sight of the M203A1aligned with the toe of the right foot, the weaponfacing upwards;

    (e) unfasten both pouches.

    (4) The pouches, magazines and the instructor's dummy roundswill be inspected by a soldier in the class;

    (5) All pouches, magazines and dummy rounds will be inspectedby the instructor to ensure that no live ammunition is present;

    (6) Once the safety drills have been completed, the soldiers willreplace the dummy rounds and magazines in their pouches,fasten their pouches, pick up their weapons and stand ATEASE.

    b. Compliance with safety precautions

    The safety precautions must be observed:

    (1) at the beginning and end of instruction;

    (2) before stripping;

    (3) during issue and return to stores;

    (4) before and after range exercises;

    (5) when there is any doubt about the safety of the weapon.

    (2) depress the barrel latch and slide the barrel forward;

    (3) show that the barrel is clear;

    (4) close the barrel;

    (5) fire the action of the grenade launcher.

    CAUTION

    Never point the weapon at anyone in jest.
