Homecoming 2009 will be
celebrated at New Mexico
State University starting today
and ending Saturday with dis
count nights, the annual pa
rade, a movie night and other
traditions to include current
students and alumni from
across the nation.
The theme for NMSU Home
coming 2009 is “Celebrating
the Past, UnMasking the Fu
ture: Mardi Gras.” Kristina
Jacobs, assistant director of
Associated Students of NMSU
activities said Homecoming
Week will be filled with events
to keep students busy and in
volved.
“ASNMSU and especially
the activities department is
excited to execute another suc
cessful homecoming,” Jacobs
said.
Jacobs said the high point
of homecoming will be the
parade before the football
game on Saturday. Greek or
ganizations, clubs and student
groups may enter floats to be
judged in the parade, which
Jacobs said is always a big
draw for the crowd.

Sustainability goals still on track
!"#$%&'(&)*#+,-.,"/,0'#1-&(2%
The New Mexico State Uni
versity Sustainability Council
will continue to work to ac
complish the 12 goals for the
2009 Year of Sustainability set
by former Interim President
Waded Cruzado.
The Goals The council met Thursday
morning to discuss “green”
projects on campus and im
proving the campus grade on
the College Sustainability Re
port Card, which resulted in
a “C” for NMSU. Steve Lor
ing, chair of the sustainabil
ity council, said the council is
serious about the goals, and is
on task to complete them by
the end of the year.
“[Our goal was to] check off
all 12 by the end of the calen
dar year,” Loring said. “Just
because the calendar year
stops doesn’t mean the sus
tainability council stops.”
Presidential Duties Loring said Cruzado did a
good job setting the sustain
ability goals and set the tone
for the next NMSU president.
When a new president is elect
ed, he or she will need to show
support for the theme of sus
tainability at NMSU and the
goals associated with it, Loring
said.
“[A new president should]
make a visible, public commit
ment by saying ‘I think this is
important,” Loring said. “Even
after the calendar year, [the
new president would] need to
show that [the theme of sus
tainability] is not just a flash in
the pan. One person in that po
sition can make a difference.”
Improving the Grade Loring said NMSU received
a “D” on the green report card
last year, and although the
grade this year was an im
provement, NMSU still has
work to do. Loring said the
grade was a surprise, because
the sustainability council, as
well as the administration and
other members of the campus
community, are making efforts
to improve NMSU economi
cally.
“We have to know for our
selves that we’re taking the
right steps,” Loring said. “[We
should] take something that

“We hope that this homecoming can be just as fun as it has been in the past,” Jacobs said, “and we hope that it is enjoy
able for the alumni, faculty, students and community of New Mexico State University.” Pi Beta Phi sorority member Dianna Pilcher said homecoming is a big event for Greeks on campus, starting in the spring when the fraternities ask the sororities to partner with them
for homecoming in the fall. “We each put a minimum of 10 hours of work on the float during Homecoming Week, so with 40 girls it comes to at least 400 hours of labor, plus what the guys put in,” Pilcher said. Pilcher added that her sorority will be paired with Sig
ma Alpha Epsilon. Pilcher said homecoming starts with community service opportunity “Keep State Great,” in which volunteers help to beautify campus for Homecoming Week. Pilcher said most Greeks are required to participate in “Keep State
Great.” “It gives us an opportunity to give back to our school,” Pilcher said. This year ASNMSU will bring topten country singer Randy Houser to sing at 8 p.m. Thursday after the bonfire. ASNMSU President Travis Dulany said the bonfire is a new event, but may become a tradition for NMSU. “Only recently did we build the bonfire up to a major event,” Dulany said. Students, faculty and the community will be encouraged to wear Aggie crimson in the spirit of homecoming at both the game and parade Saturday. ASNMSU will also host a student talent show and a performance by comedian Bill Cosby at the Pan American Center Friday evening. Dulany said the budget for homecoming is set by the Senate. “Last year they spent roughly $38,000 on homecoming,” Dulany said. The Aggies will play Fresno State at the homecoming football game Saturday, which will be televised on ESPNU. “[Athletics] are the whole reason we have homecoming,” Dulany said. “Sometimes it’s hard to remember that.”

was a discouragement and look at it as an opportunity.” Loring also said he was surprised that some of the category grades on the green report card were lower than a “C.” “I knew endowment was going to be an issue, but it always is,” Loring said. “We put our best effort into it.” Loring said the council is looking into using another ranking system to grade the sustainability efforts of NMSU using more clearcut guidelines.
The “Kermit Project” Mark Uchanski, assistant professor of plant and envi
ronmental sciences at NMSU, spoke at the council meeting and said members of the department are working on the hoop house project, which constructs lowcost, heated green houses for small farms. Uchanski said one goal for the project is to verify whether or not farmers can produce highquality vegetable crops in the middle of winter using the hoop houses. Uchanski described the project as the “Kermit Project,” because the structures are green on the outside, complying with the theme of “going green” and the Year of Sustainability.
Students and Sustainability Loring said a list of courses related to sustainability have been added to the course catalog. Loring said students who
are interested in sustainability issues in subjects ranging from agriculture to business now have the option to learn more about them. Loring said a survey was sent out to the leaders of the various colleges at NMSU to find out which types of courses would be valuable to offer as part of the inventory for the sustainability courses. Loring said the course list is now complete enough to be viewed by the campus community, but will likely continue to change and expand. The course list can be accessed at www.sustainability.nmsu.edu under the Learning and Curriculum tab.

! f a man surfaced from a bomb shelter he built in the ‘60s to protect him
from the threat of nuclear attack from the Russian communist empire and awoke in 2009 at New Mexico State University, what would he think? Well, he’d probably think, based on taking a simple stroll through the Corbett Center or Zuhl Library, the United States !"#$%&'()"**+$,-./0$#%()"*)#1$control. The government has taken over control of the people and we (the people) are forced to bear the logo of this control: a shiny apple. A little extreme? I think so. Will it stop Mac owners from buying anything other than Mac products? I doubt it. Only a person who has lived in a bomb shelter hasn’t heard of and owned at least one product of Apple Inc. This pertains especially to students on campus. What is it about Mac that gives students this sense of empowerment? What leads students to believe that holding an aluminum laptop or shiny purple iPod will somehow save them socially? Recently, I decided to do a little bit of research on the topic, although it was purely for the sense of academia. Out of the 14 computers I saw placed on students’ laps in Corbett, nine were Apple. Thirteen of
the 14 had the trademark white ear buds attributed to the Apple iPod. Here’s the worst part: One of the laptops I came across was the 17inch, illustrious MacBook Pro. Needless to say I had to stop my research after green envy spilled across my face like those awkward spots of rain Las Cruces gets sometimes in October. I tried to tell myself, “It’s OK, Ben. You simply need a MacBook for editing purposes.” This applies to most students in the CMI program, but I was still jealous. This person had two inches of screen on me and that was all he needed. Here’s where the truth lies. Apple probably has a comparable machine to that of a PC. It has equal processing power and similar programs. The operating systems on Mac are of the same general principles. The difference is, of course, the look. Mac has always had the upper hand to PC, especially in advertising. Since 1997, when Jeff Goldblum introduced the '0#1$)2"($%-$3%4/$1/*/5)#)%-$screens, Mac has always intrigued us. Apple commercials, whether with Justin Long and the PC guy, or simply an iPod "*%-/6$3"5/$"*!"+#$10"-#'7/.$the public’s attention. The commercials always
portray the object or people against a plain and yet aweinspiring white backdrop. This appeals more, I believe, to college students. Mac has continued this appeal even going as far as putting apple stickers in literally every piece of software made by Mac and most hardware devices as well. I suppose, in summation, we as college students (or simply as consumers) are still suckers for the shiny. While this can be said for many things, take a look around one day and count the apples. Oh, and about that guy in the Corbett Center with the 17inch: don’t worry. He had the old iPod nano, while I have the new one that plays video. Take that, guy!

After reading her article, I was overcome by wanderlust, and had a desire (stay with me here) to look at doors. On my wander around campus, I counted seven buildings with large lettering on or near the doors stat
ing that New Mexico State University is the state’s land grant college. Corbett Center, one of the busiest buildings on campus, has such doors. Both of the libraries on campus have wording to that effect. In fact, in order to research the wages of professors, Ferrales had to walk past one of these selfsame doors. Several doors in buildings where agricultural classes are taught have this exact wording: “The Morrill Act of 1862 established a Land Grant University in each state where THE LEADING OBJECT would be instruction in Agriculture and 0/*"1/.$'/*.#8$9/4:3"#)#$)-$

the original). The Morrill Act was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on July 2, 1862. The land grant system grants land to states with which they can build a university whose main purpose is: “to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts.” Meaning that universities in the land grant system have education in agriculture and engineering as the primary goal. NMSU has taken that purpose to heart, as evidenced by the explicit declaration of its status as a land grant college and the fact that NMSU is fairly well known in the agricultural !"#$%"&'"%%('"&$)%*#+$,-($!$school of its stature. A student at NMSU can get an education in agriculture or engineering of a quality equal to much larger and much more expensive schools, while still being able to be within an open environment with professors that are approachable. Agriculture touches every single person’s life daily. A bumper sticker often seen on farm trucks comes to mind, “If you eat, you’re involved in agriculture.” Ms. Ferrales is clearly not proud of our 147year heritage as an agricultural school. I would invite her, if she would like to study at a school that does not have agriculture as a priority, to seek a university that is not a land grant university. This of course means that she can’t study at Purdue, MIT, Cornell, University of WisconsinMadison, or any school in the University of California system – to mention just a few of the schools that are land grant schools. I am glad that NMSU is able
to pay professors in agriculture a competitive rate, which has created an excellent faculty. I would also say, though there seems to be discrepancy between the wages of the +.%/')/$%0!1.*%+$&'2%"$'"$3+4$Ferrales’ piece to someone who is in uninformed about wage rates for professors, the median wage of an art professor is $55,190. Meaning, Ms. Ferrales’ piece amounts to little more than sensationalist journalism.

The recession has many people choosing cheaper means of entertainment, or staying in, but “Tater Aid presents RecessionFree Session” offered Las Cruces six bands and other live
entertainment for free at Firkins Stage. The Saturday event was geared toward the Americana scene with an emphasis on family. Tim Staley, alias Tater Aid, is an English teacher from Oñate High School, who was a disk jockey at KRUX in 2004. Performing bands were: Rail
road Gin, Moses Jones, The Raggies, Baylor Canyon String Band and Drunk Armstrong. Featured poets were Robbie Whendeborn, Peter Brooks and Beatlick Joe. Staley said the one goal of the session was to offer an alternative form of entertainment instead of the bar or going out and spending money. There will
not be another RecessionFree Session, because, hopefully, the country will be out of the recession, Staley said. Another goal of the session was to give back to the community, Staley said. “There’s not a whole lot of these types of shows happening [in Las Cruces],” Staley said. There are a lot of ska and
popular genre bands in the city, but few are mellow and familyoriented like Americana, Staley said. All bands at the event were local Americana, similar to Bob Dylan and Widespread Panic. Parents danced with their children in the grass and four little
