Dalhart was officially incorporated as a town in 1902, and then again as a city in 1904.

Dalhart is the seat of Dallam County, lo-cated in the far northwestern corner of the Texas Panhandle. The City of Dalhart straddles Dallam County to the north and Hartley County to the south, giving rise to the name Dalhart.

Dalhart is closer to six other state capitals (New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, Kan-sas, Nebraska, and Wyoming) than Aus-tin, the state capital of Texas. Dalhart is uniquely located near the crossroads of these states and is only 83 miles north-west of Amarillo, Texas. This makes for fast and easy trips to the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado. In fact, popular ski resorts in Red River and Angel Fire, N.M., are just a little over three hours away.

Although Dalhart celebrated its centen-nial in 2001, the history of the panhandle dates back much further than 1901. In 1879, the 16th Texas State Legislature set aside three million acres of land in the panhandle, in hopes of using it to finance the building of the new state capitol. The acreage became known as the XIT Ranch. At one time it was the largest fenced ranch in the world, covering portions of ten counties.

In 1881, fire destroyed the old state capi-tal building in Austin, making the need for a new one urgent. The Texas Capital Board contracted with Mathias Schnell

to build a new capital building in ex-change for the land. Schnell eventually transferred the contract to the Capitol Syndicate, which was formed by Taylor, Babcock, and Company of Chicago along with brothers Charles and John Farwell. The syndicate turned the land into the XIT Ranch in order to make it profitable until it could be sold. By the late 1800’s, the XIT Ranch was running 150,000 head of cattle, with the XIT brand discouraging cattle rustlers, as it was difficult to alter. The land was gradually sold beginning in the late 1890’s , the last parcel of the XIT Ranch was sold in 1963.

The Dalhart airport’s history began in 1942 when the Dalhart Army Air Field opened on 3,000 acres. The air base was closed in 1946 and the property was hand-ed over to the City of Dalhart, whereby it was converted into the Dalhart Municipal Airport.

Dalhart was built by the railroad and the industry remains a mainstay of the lo-cal economy. Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific run through Dal-hart. The first rail in Dalhart was laid on February 27, 1882 and was part of the former Fort Worth and Denver City Rail-way Company, now BNSF. Eventually the Rock Island Line crossed paths with the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway, in 1901 Twist Junction was born, though no one liked the name. After combining the names of the two counties on which it was located, the name Dalhart was chosen to replace Twist Junction.
