As I looked around it seemed people were enjoying themselves, whether they were from our neighborhood or were guests of members. But the festival was a success at a deeper level. I believe this festival stretched our faith as followers of Jesus Christ. A better way to say it is that as a church we took some risks. We took a risk to see if people would turn out. We took a risk as church leaders of this event to see if members would help and they did. We had people help serving by getting the outside grounds of the church ready. We had people prepare refreshments, and lead games and activities. Billye Thornton and Linda Davis said, “no one we asked to help refused us.” We took risk financially, for there were costs for an event like this; but the financial leadership of the church was supportive along with people inside and outside of the congregation who generously donated in a variety of ways. Read Matthew 25 about the parable of the slaves and talents. The one slave whom the king (king was symbolic of God) was displeased is the one slave who took no risk in watching over the resources of which he had been trusted to oversee for the king. Our church leaders and members took risk regarding weather, turnout of people, and resources for the sake of sharing Christ. Going forward we’ll reflect about what we learned from this event. But I am grateful we took a collective risk in order to share hospitality in the name of Jesus. Who knows how God will honor our step of faith? Who knows how our guests will be touched by God through this event? And like I have often heard, churches learn more from mistakes than success. It might have been well known Pastor Rick Warren who said, “Our church can tell you more how not to do church than how to because we learn more from our mistakes.” The only thing we can know for sure is that we will continue to take risks to share Christ with others and make disciples in his name. “More than a Church Festival”

This past Sunday our church festival was a solid success. In spite of the heat we had good attendance. The purpose of the festival was to offer hospitality. We wanted to reach out to the neighborhood around us as well as have our members use this event to share with family and friends. Join us on facebook!

We just created a page on facebook where we all can

share and exchange information on upcoming events,

community news and whatever else may be relevant to our

ministry. I (Michele Gammill) am the “administrator” so you

need to “be my friend” to view the Church’s facebook

page. (I believe that’s how it works). It’s in it’s earliest

stage of existence, but hopefully we can all help develop it

into an effective ministry tool. Suggestions welcome!

Thank you, Michele

Pastor Gus Vacation Announcement:

I will be on vacation August 8th through the 21st. If there are any

questions or needs of me, please contact RC Owen or Jerry Leach. They

will do their best to cover issues that might arise. If something is an

emergency and they think I should know, they will contact me.

Everyone needs to get away for a while and I hope you understand my

attempts to not receive any calls about church matters unless it is of

importance that cannot wait until I am back in the office on the 22nd.

Thank you for your understanding.
